Wedding season is upon us! In this era of getting the picture perfect moment to post on social media scammers are coming out to take money from couples who want to commemorate their special day. When you’re getting married or planning a wedding - it’s one of the most stressful things you can be a part of. Couples are willing to pay someone a 5 figure salary just so they can be in good hands. Recently there’s been a rise in wedding parties paying someone to do a job, and in return, they either get scammed or they’ll overpay for below average service. Thought i’d look into this rabbit hole and compile a few scenarios where the bride and groom didn’t get what they asked for. We have bad fanart, a wedding videographer that edited on Windows Movie Maker, and a 16k table from Home Depot. Wedding Scams Are Causing Drama on Tiktok #edvasian

As someone whose cousin was scammed by a videographer for her wedding, I'm just glad I realized what was happening and I ended up using my cellphone to get all the video footage of that night. The videographer gave her 5 minutes of footage and I ended up giving her a full 3 hour video. This scamming is so hurtful to the people involved, but really solidifies that I will never pay anyone I don't trust to do things I find important.

My sister’s videographer ghosted her after the wedding and didn’t send her ANYTHING. She spent literal years sending him messages asking for updates, and at one point just gave up and asked him to at least tell her if he just lost the footage somehow. He never responded, and 10 years later she’s still upset about it. It’s something that can never be recreated, so he not only robbed her of her money, time, and energy, but also memories.

I’d be honest, as an artist, £1,200 is so cheap for a live art work, especially a portrait. But that quality is…. Yikes… One of my artist friends was paid £5,000 for a portrait of a couple for their anniversary. Oil paint, took a month to complete, and she’s been a professional painter for 40ish years now. The finished piece was beautiful and well framed, to the point the couple gave her a tip of £500 on top. Art is a luxury item. It’s gonna be pricey.

“Pretty standard” is the problem. We are in an era where artists are confidently charging the full value of their worth, and everyone else is understanding you shouldn’t haggle. That’s great! Except people don’t understand that “what you’re worth” is based on the quality of your work. Everyone from cake decorators to painters think everyone is entitled to a “standard” even if they don’t meet that standard.

Yeah this woman was in no way a professional artist... But that price, for a professional artist? Pretty normal price, people. I get it, you're all used to buy 5$ prints or 25$ commissions, but a professional artist could easily charge many thousands for -truly good- artwork.

Exactly. The wedding painting is as absolutely not professional by any means, it was terrible, but actual professional artists do need to be paid by industry standards. Often times the price for a finished 2 dimensional one of a kind painting (not a reproduced print, original one of a kind piece) bought from a genuine professional artist, the universal industry standard is determined by height + length in centimeters and add one zero to the result. So a painting that’s 150 cm by 60 cm, is in total 210 plus one zero so it’s $2100. This is the GLOBAL industry standard. Buying an actual fine art piece is vastly different than buying a print from the IKEA or whatever. It’s like buying a couture hand-sewn evening gown, you are paying for professional, high quality expertise and artistry, you are not buying mass manufactured basic clubbing dresses made by child labor in a 3rd world country. The price goes up as you become more successful and sought after but that’s the starting point, if you are trying to be a genuine professional artist if you charge less than that, you are either saying you are so inexperienced and so naive that you don’t know the industry standards and in fact art is really a little hobby rather than a genuine passion for you. Or alternatively you are saying you don’t take yourself seriously as an artist, so you don’t price it seriously because you yourself deem it as not worthy of the industry standard prices, so potential buyers or other artists immediately know to not take you or your work seriously either.

For anyone not understanding the pricing of thr art: A live custom painting like that could run $500-$1500. Based on time and supplies. Travel, room and board may be a factor too. Now the person's paintings shown in this video were not a very good example, but of the other many wedding painters I have seen, that price is entirely reasonable. Artists deserve to be paid their worth. And most people who do hire them know the cost and will treasure the art. 6:42

It's not the buyers fault imo. Only an extremely low suspicious price like under 100 warrants such terrible quality. I think these people who know they have poor skills have too much audacity and arrogance to charge so high. Most people assume high prices is related to higher service and that if you're paying high you must be getting a professional. If you went to a boutique to pay 1k on a dress you wouldn't expect it to have been sewn at a sweatshop in China, would you?

It depends on the skill though, I know I could do it for that price because I'm good lol, (not being cocky it's true) but a lot of people charge a ton because it takes them a long time. WHICH ISN'T BAD, IT'S A SKILL THING and there's a sweet spot. But let's think about crochet as an example - a beginner crochetter might take 10 hours on something simple like a steering wheel cover while an experienced one can do it in 3-4 hours. The beginner isn't going to break even for their time unless they charge like $75-100 even though almost nobody is going to be willing to pay more than $30-40. It's not wrong it's just that they have to get good enough to crank work out. DOES IT KIND OF SUCK? yeah, and it can take the fun out of the art too. I can do a pretty decent pet portrait in about 1-2 hours and I charge about $80 (depending on size) because I'm good and because I'm fast that shakes out to $40 an hour. It took a long time to get here, and I could charge more but I'd get fewer people. So it's all a balancing act. I do not think that live painter was particularly great, I think it's not even a stylistic thing (I love abstract art) I just don't think they have great technique. But to each their own. I definitely think art is subjective, and I don't want to be a gate keeper of art, but I also don't believe in like "support small business yeehaw" if the small business isn't that great. Supply and demand baby.

$1,500 is a great price for someone brand new who is still working on their basic skills (I’d much rather be PAID $1,500 to work on the skills to turn something into a career than to PAY the $20,000 I’ve paid over the last two years to work on the skills…creative art degrees are expensive), but for some one with enough experience to be established, it’s low.

@@snailart9214 This is entirely true, and worse, if a more experienced person were to charge $25/hr and make it in 4 hours, they’d get less business than a new person who charges $10/hr who takes 10 hours, even though both should charge $100 in the end and the experienced person would probably make a much better product. Too many people look at the hourly, and think that the experienced person is overcharging even though that higher hourly is the result of having the experience to be faster.

Those live paintings we see on social media, wouldn't be surprised if they payed more than 2 times that. It seems to be a very fancy service, just finding someone with the skills/will to do it on the spot and who has the time to is not easy. (a quick google search tells me entry price 1500$ up to 10k$). So the pandemic arrived and I never saw that woman again. The last I've heard about her was that she was sad because she broke up with her boyfriend. I've tryed to talk to her but she ghosted me. As a wedding photographer, I can safely say that wedding video is HLURGH. Hoooo that’s so rough. BUT, you absolutely get what you pay for. $1200 for a wedding video for both the rehearsal dinner and the wedding? That’s insanely low, and I feel like his portfolio couldn’t have reflected quality. But I never want to see a couple get bad products.

$1,200 isn’t that much for a custom live painting of you on your wedding day, the issue is, it’s a lot for the quality. Not far into the video yet but that first painting image… ouch. It would cost a lot more but sending a photo to be painted will be better for the quality. Unless the painter starts at you wedding but finishes up the details at home and then sends it to you.

As an artist, I can tell you why the painting looks off. The medium (paint) doesn't match the cartoonish art style. If the piece was done in marker (markers are not less professional than paint), the painting would look less crummy and more put together. It seems like the professional saw that wedding paintings were trending online and tried to take an opportunity to participate in the trend, but they don't have enough experience with paint itself. It looks nice, but for many clients it would appear that you're not confident with using paints, and to professional painters, it looks like paint was not needed to make this art piece.

My husband and I hired a guy to do our wedding video. He had his own studio and he interviewed us both. He seemed super legit but in the end it took over A YEAR after our wedding and countless emails and phone calls to him to give us our finished wedding video. It was mediocre at best. 🤦🏻‍♀️ this was 15 years ago so reviews weren’t as prevalent as they are these days or we might have been warned. It’s a shame cause it was our wedding and we wanted it to be really professionally filmed. It wasn’t.

As an artist myself I see too often middle aged women who paint with acrylics who went to 1 or 2 art classes and now seem to think they are a professional. I don't know if it's delusion or if it's just overly positive thinking. Why acrylics? Because that's typically what they use in art classes, so that's how you can spot a newbie artist. People who have practiced art since they were kids are typically depressed and filled with self doubt. 45+ women beginner artists are immune to self doubt perhaps because they didn't grow up with all the shitty treatment artists always get.
@noelletakesthesky3977
@noelletakesthesky3977 8 ай бұрын
Acrylic isn’t an inherently bad medium, though there are certainly cheap-ass quality acrylics with very low pigment in them. I’ve seen stunning acrylic works by very talented artists, and I’ve seen shit work by newbies using the high-end stuff. “People who have practiced art since they were kids are typically depressed and filled with self doubt.” This is a shit mindset. A lot of people who start art as kids are creative types who use art as their outlet. Some creative types gravitate toward music, or another kind of art. Some kids are sporty and gravitate toward various sports. It’s supremely stupid to think that what makes kids do art is self-doubt and depression. If anything, doing art takes a measure of confidence since you have to be able to look at your own work and see what can make it better and be confident enough that you can. Those 45+ women who seem to lack self-doubt are actually the ones with enough self-doubt that they can’t look critically at their own work to see where they can improve. They can’t handle it. So they don’t, and never improve.

And the guy said it was all the footage he got. She was devastated. They had beautiful pictures from the photographer though! So yeah guys. Buyer beware when it comes to your big special day. Ngl. That wedding video is not it! I told my fiance that two things I will not cheep out of for the wedding are the videographer/photographer and the Emcee. I'm a video editor myself so I was able to save a bit of money by paying the videographer to send me all of the raw footage to edit myself. I'll have control over how my video looks, but if I don't have good footage to work with, that wouldn't even matter. This is why it's incredibly important to research who you're hiring for your wedding.

Seeing stuff like this, I'm so happy our wedding worked out perfectly last year photo/video-wise. My brother basically put up my tripod, pointed the camcorder at us and pressed record. The white balance in the videos was way off, but I think I can fix it in post-production myself without any issues, the important thing was that all the funny moments during the reception were captured on video. Our official photographer only cost us 350€ (around $375) because it was my husband's ex-colleague who is a professional photographer. The photos came out awesome.

I’m getting married next spring and the entire ceremony, minus the dress, is going to be $5000 and we’re gonna have close to about 80 people. We both agreed that we rather spend money on a down payment for a house 😂. After I saw my sister spend 25 grand on her wedding last year, I knew that I didn’t wanna do that. We’re getting married at our favorite park where we love to hike, inviting both are huge families, and most of the budget is going towards a good caterer. we’re going with really rustic decorations, so it’s very cheap to decorate. We’re both really happy with this and looking forward to it, big weddings are literally such a waste of money in my opinion, as long as you’re together and happy, that’s all that should matter. we need to stop comparing our weddings to other people’s weddings, if they’re happy with their wedding I’m happy for them too, but it’s just not for me. My dream wedding dress I got is 1200 dollars but I felt like that was the one thing I wanted the splurge in for the big day, could not be more happy!

ALSO STARTING A MARRIAGE OFF IN DEBT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONCLUDE IN AN ANNULMENT OR RAPID DIVORCE (and ruin your life). Don't do that. Be practical. It's an important day.
