Nowadays, we’re social media influencers pop up in places we’d never expect. Especially in healthcare where experts are sharing their knowledge while gaining large followings and fame. We’re talking about Dr. Kenny Smiles and Dr. Roxy. Both are famous on TikTok for creating content around their professions of Dentist and Plastic Surgeon. At first glance, it seems like people having fun on the internet while cultivating an audience interested in their line of work. Funny content like roasting a patient’s teeth and what cosmetic procedures to get so you can fit in with beauty standards - the basics! But once you dig a little deeper you realize the line between professional and content creator starts getting blurred. The parasocial relationship they built with their fans doesn’t seem the most ethical since they’re putting clout over the safety of their patients. Are doctors supposed to be our cool internet-famous friend who happens to know how to do surgery? The Supervillain Era of Healthcare Influencers #edvasian

literally!! teeth are a huge insecurity for so many people (including myself) and depending on where you live you may not be able to afford the healthcare you need to get them fixed if something happens. which also plays into classism, as "ugly teeth" are often because people can't afford to do anything about cavities, chipped teeth or get braces etc. I've been to the dentist's once in the past 4 years and only got a checkup and had them fix a single cavity despite needing a lot more than that, but it was what i could afford and my insurance will only cover half if it's urgent. I've been told I may need braces if I want my teeth to stay healthy in the long run, and I was supposed to get a new checkup on my wisdom teeth months ago but it's SO expensive that I don't even want to think about it! I could literally get all of my books for the next semester for the cause of getting my wisdom teeth pulled, and the braces could most likely pay for books for the rest of my degree:/

Yeah. I had surgery with a plastic surgeon for my top surgery. He had a small social media but not anything like this. It was much more focused on the education and the account didn't post very often. Even though his clinic does both cosmetic and necessary procedures, it was still focused on the education. I'm comfortable with that level of social media presence especially when it helps to see before and afters of the procedure you're going to get (with patient consent! and also often only showing the area and not their face or if the procedure is on the face you can still zoom in) This dentist is way out of line.

It is weird to think that veneers are absolutely necessary when people have crooked teeth. Veneers have their own complications that can increase the chances of needing dentures earlier on. There are also companies that make temporary veneers that are customized to fit over someone's teeth. If someone wants to get veneers it is their personal choice, but there should be more education around the risks and alternatives. Also this escalating narrative that they are necessary on social media is disturbing.

In the US there's a lil legal thing called HIPAA when it comes to any healthcare. Even if you've signed a HIPAA agreement with your healthcare provider, there are things outlined in there that they cannot do in regards to social media because there are separate forms you have to sign in regards to the release of any of your identifiers be it your initials, face, name etc. I hope that comes to bite him in the ass, though with most healthcare providers having insurance and lawyers probably covering their ass, it may be hard to sue them without legal rep.

My dad would tell me to not take it so personally and that it's just a "joke." I wish I had the courage to say something to her back then. Having bad teeth/smile isn't easy, and I'm sure the majority of people who went to that dentist have been faced with people making fun of them their whole lives. The last thing you would expect is your dentist (who's suppose to help you) cracking jokes and making you feel worse. As a healthcare professional for the last 20 years, I do not like these “influencers”. Some patients already have unrealistic expectations and look to us to help, educate them. It’s already difficult to get patients the care they need…fighting ridiculous insurance requirements, constantly being short staffed, finding new specialist because many retired. Patient confidentiality is serious and not to be shared with the public. This behavior is not acceptable. We are here to help people in need that come to us because they trust us and our knowledge/experience.

They never know what to do with themselves or will say “I was just asking (why I’m wearing a mask)” Exactly. Don’t “just ask”. I’m you came here to a retail store to buy some shit. Buy some shit and go. I don’t need entertainment. So with doctors, I go there for a health service. I don’t need the entertainment.

6:03 How does no one in the room try to intervene for this poor old woman?! She probably doesn’t even really know what’s going on right now, and they’re all okay with him sexually harassing her and taking advantage of her mental issues? Who took her there, because they should be stopping this!

I'm sorry, but NO! In dentistry uni, we're taught about ethics and professionalism! Its honestly disgusting how that dentist speaks to his patients and behaves around them. If my lecturers came across these tiktoks, they'd have heart attacks. Health care professionals can use social media to promote their work in ethically right ways. Seriously.🙄

I am of the opinion that more doctors should do educational content on social media, it's really cool hearing about the things a professional in that field goes through in their daily life. BUT if they do their social media content in their workplace that's an instant red flag in my opinion. There are medical professionals I've seen that have made all their content from their office or from their home, and I think that's the way it should be done.

There are right ways to do medical content... I watch Dr. Mike and Doctorly and they use their knowledge to make fun and educational content. That's the way it should be done, not for clout or for entertainment while you're at your job at the expense of your patients.

Doctorly is great! They're likable and the content is good and humorous. It's nice when they are themselfs, you can tell they are professional and authentic through their content. These other doctors out here putting their customers on blast and dancing in the operating room is very unprofessional but unfortunately is trendy. It's a shame really

Wow! Ok, I’m not a social media drama kind of person and I usually roll my eyes at most “internet tea” type stuff. I also often think that people are way too sensitive on the internet especially when it concerns jokes, like actual jokes. HOWEVER. This Dr Kenny situation is absolutely INSANE. I knew about the awful plastic surgeon lady but this Kenny guy I just found out about today. 😳 I don’t remember the last time I was so taken aback by a person on social media. There’s still stuff coming out about him daily. How did people let him slide by for so long!? Like the guy is a slimy worm, actually just a disgusting person taking advantage of peoples vulnerabilities. I’m actually speechless.

Doctors, teachers and therapists shouldn't be allowed to use social media. Everytime they do they're either shitting on the people they're supposed to be helping or they're filming cringe shit DURING WORK. There are people who already have a hard time trusting medical and educational professionals and this shit isnt helping.

with the dentist stuff- I see it as a double-edged sword. I used to have awful teeth that made my life miserable- I would never smile in any picture, I wouldn't eat in front of ppl in fear that they would see my teeth, I was constantly making sure my mouth was SHUT. I was lucky enough to get them fixed a year ago and I've never been happier- everyone in my life said they could see a massive difference in my attitude before and after. As nice as this is, people online can be VILE. If someone recorded and uploaded my before teeth for thousands to see I think I'd become insecure again. I don't think its right for him to put these people on blast.

Because these stories are all about cosmetic procedures that patients are otherwise going to have to pay a lot of money for for out of pocket. Unfortunately they probably sign a lot of fine print before the procedures in order to get the services comped. They may be signing away their rights, or at least the doctors and dentists hope so. Some of these medical "professionals" apparently get away with this by hanging the offer of free services over their heads so they do anything, maybe including what they are not allowed to do Because these are probably private practices and do not work with insurance companies at all, they have less bureaucracy, but they still have a lot of standards and regulations they are bound by. As more of these incidents will be taken to court and we will find out if that arrangement holds up..
