I learned all about calculating mortgage rates and compounding interest in high school and guests speakers would run a budgeting workshop every year, plus there were optional courses in high school on business that would cover all that and more 🤷♀️ A lot of people don’t care or learn the lesson until it’s too late and I don’t think that has to do with school
@freefree1664 Жыл бұрын
@@caterinaramirez8864 I think that as math is taught in school anyway, it would be sensible to teach young people 'life math' that is actually useful and beneficial for everyday life - including budgeting, saving, investing, taxes, & small business etc. I feel these would have been more useful for me to have learned at school than algebra for example (have never in my life needed to use it in corporate/office career). Life math could be a priority part of a basic math curriculum in high school as it is needed in future by all students. (Intermediate & advanced classes would of course teach the algebra etc for those who would need it in potential careers they would then go to college for). But it could be a year long project for a class: at start of the year picking a job title & salary out of a hat that is theirs for the year. Use pretend cash & bank accounts, credit cards. Make a game of it, making pretend wages, budgets, purchases, savings etc. Once a month they pick out of the hat an 'event' like buying a car, house, an appliance going bust & needing replacement... & by the end of the year would have a taste for how it all works in a fun & useful way. It would prepare them for college in a way that they could think twice about the credit card offered or which student loans to get or should they work a few more hours. Maybe I should invent that game for teachers!

I could do fine on $30,000/year so I find the incomes ridiculous for being broke. Fortunately my parents were products of the great depression so we got an allowance about 25% of all the other kids in the neighborhood. I have always paid cash except on a rare occassion where I would have the money to pay off the visa in a couple of weeks. I have no debt. When I bought my cars I looked at a number of things. First, what is my trade in value of existing car. Second, safety and maintenance of the new car. Third, how much cash I put down (I always make sure I can put cash down along with trade in). Fourth insurance cost. Fifth is what I can afford in payments and how fast I can pay it off. Back when I had to drive back and forth to work, gas mileage was a huge concern. Technically I still look at that. Yes you can say just don't buy one. But I used to drive 150+ miles a day. So I used to get close to 300,000 miles on it before trading it in. So I keep my cars as long as I can until maintenance costs more than it is worth.
@cjhoward4092 жыл бұрын
It would be even more cost effective if you sold your used cars outright versus trading them in. Car dealers don’t give you much for trade in, because they need to make a profit on your trade in. So for instance instead of getting, say, $3,000 from a dealer on a trade in, you could’ve possibly got $5,000 out right and then put that $5,000 towards the purchase of a new/newer car. The only downfall is that it might take awhile to sell your car. But, I think it’s worth the time because it’s worth the extra money in your pocket 😁

We mustn't allow Cash to disappear, that would mean: no Charity Bins, no helping the Homeless, no kids earning their first $5 for washing a car, no elderly able to pay for a handyman, etc, etc. If there is no longer cash, we are screwed! Therefore, BOYCOTT (and send a message) any place that is 'cashless'. Having said that, I'd love to see new eps! Gail is awesome! 💖✌

An extra $350 is far better spent maintaining older cars (unless they've been neglected to the point they're completely falling apart). You'll lose at least double that every month in first year depreciation on a new car. Insurance on new vehicles tends to be more expensive as well. $4200 a year should easily cover routine maintenance and even a major repair on existing vehicles. They've got no business buying a new car until they've got debt under control. But so many people only focus on monthly payments and not the total cost of those decisions-and that's why they stay broke.
@kibblenbits2 жыл бұрын
I agree! I've never owned a brand new car and I'm in my 70's. All my cars (I drive them until they drop), which I purchased from the original dealers, averaged about 2 years old. When my 15 year old van died in 2014, I bought a small 2012 car, that gets 40 miles to a gallon of gas. Since I started working from home about 10 years before I retired in 2019, my now 10 year old car, that had 30k miles on it when purchased, has less than 70k miles on it and I now drive about 3k miles a year. It should last the rest of my life. I own my home on acreage, have been debt free for years and all my bills total less than 15% (not including food) of my SS income alone. My son (51) and his wife (48) of 25 years, also own their home and have no debt. It's the best possible way to live.
@sarao80742 жыл бұрын
She didn’t say buy a brand new car. The salesman was showing him older model used cars. I think the point was that if their cars go kaput suddenly, they have options rather than dumping more money into a money pit. She didn’t tell him to go lease a Cadillac.

I wish people would realize that the fast fashion that they wear once and then "donate" to the Goodwill or Salvation Army will most likely (84% of donated clothes) end up in the dump, or in the dump of another country. Very little donated actually makes it into the thrift store for resale. So not only are you spending money on unnecessary clothes, but you are contributing to climate change. Shop wisely. That being said my children's clothing mostly came from local thrift stores as they were growing up, especially during the fast growing years. Now that they are young adults all are VERY frugal with money, self sufficient, and all THREE had saved at least $15,000 dollars by the time they spend were 18 for when they moved out on their own for Uni. We were/are not a wealthy family, actually just barely middle class according to California wages. Teach your children well, especially about money and saving it, so they don't end up like the people in this show or her Prince$$ show. Also what she was initially doing to her husband is called financial abuse.

Total financial abuse on her part but she's a woman so that's ignored. Men who make more than the wife couldn't and shouldn't be able to so restrictive to their wives. Goes both ways in the land of Equality. Glad to see they are both on a better page with transparency. Great job!
