Ted is a paramedic, Melissa a cop. Working opposite shifts in high-stress jobs, and caring for two young kids, has left them with no energy to track their money. So, they spend, spend, spend. Totally divorced from their financial reality, the couple underestimates their monthly income yet still overspend across the board. Their healthy joint income is more than enough to comfortably support the family, so Gail’s first question is: “where’s the money going?” .

She has been clear in other episodes you need enough money to cover your basic expenses. She can’t get someone to manage money they don’t have. Often there is way to reduce spending but when there’s a mismatch on money coming in and money going out something needs to change…and that’s not her responsibility. If you have very limited money coming in you may need to change your living situation or rely on family. But she can’t do that for you.

Watching this in 2023 and it's so refreshing to see Gail doing what she's so good at. What an amazing couple. This episode, for me, really highlights that having a big income salary doesn't ensure you'll be debt free. If you're not careful with your spending and go beyond your means anyone can be in big trouble! I've learned so much from Gail!

Being “house proud” has caused so much financial ruin. Everyone that I know who have gorgeous, showpiece homes have enormous mortgages. My husband and I bought a fixer-upper for cash about ten years ago. It is a stunning place that people look at with awe? No way! It’s small and unimpressive, but it’s ours. We don’t have a mortgage and the value, when you add up what we’ve done to improve it plus how much it initially cost, would give us a 400% profit if we sold it today. At the end of the day, it’s the people and the love that matters to us, not having granite countertops, vaulted ceilings, and extra bedrooms that we don’t need. If that’s important to others, then God bless! We all have our priorities in life. Financial stability is infinitely more valuable to me than an impressive house.

What a wonderful, loving couple. They really went into this with a great attitude, and gave 100% with every challenge. They also took responsibility for the mess they got themselves into, unlike some couples who blame each other (or blame anyone or anything). And it just makes a person feel good watching two people who have been together for eight years, have two kids and very stressful jobs, and yet they're so loving and supportive of each other. This is one couple I don't need an update on because I have the feeling they've done very well over the years!

Convenience Living is your biggest drain on any household. A co-worker smoked & bought cigarettes from the 7/11. I told him he paid 33% more for convenience shopping. He allowed me to buy a carton with his money & give one pack a day at work - he had 3 full packs left by Friday & $50.00 in cash to keep. I told him his weekend was going to have a great start.

I was taught by parents who lived thru the depression in the 1930's. Never live above our means. I am 75 and followed that all my life. With hubby we never spent what we didn't have. I am widowed after 51 1/2 years of marriage and live very comfortably. I even put 30% of my income into a savings account. It's put aside in case I end up in a nursing home later in life and no one will have to support me. No kids so I have had to rely on myself.

Whether man or woman when theres someome actually "managing" the household and not the drinking wine and watching reality t.v. kinda managememt. I know a stay at home Mama and because of how well she manages their money, cooks and grows food (takes the lils outside gardening with her to teach them now theyre old enough to pull weeds). They save a FUCK TON of money. Its food. It is always the food. Big t.v.? New car? Easier to KNOW you shouldnt indulge. A coffee here....a burger there...late night snacks at the 711 and suddenly youre hemorrhaging money.
