New parents Brandon and Tamara moved in with his parents to save money and pay off bills. But living rent-free in a cushy suburban house complete with a pool hasn’t given them much motivation to become financially independent. And while Brandon loves his two part time jobs, they don’t bring in enough money to support a family. Headstrong Brandon is used to getting his own way, and when Gail gives him some tough challenges, fireworks ensue.

With rent at only $200, they should be debt free with a pile of money to buy a house. NEVER ENABLE YOUR KIDS WITH LOW OR FREE RENT UNLESS THEY ARE PILING UP MONEY TO MOVE OUT SUCCESSFULLY!!! That’s exactly what I did. I lived with my parents while saving 50% of my net income and bought a house.

This man-child is a father and he’s worried about him not liking his work! This is life buddy, when you have a child it’s about the child and it’s no longer about you and your wants. It’s about your responsibility to your child and their future. The two of them are oblivious, and I do feel sorry for their child to grow up in the basement. There’s only so long your child can be in the room with you before it starts to get weird.

One thing that disappointed me is that Gail didn't give them the challenge to find better paying jobs. He even said that he could work at a factory for $30 an hour! Even if he did it for only 5 years, it would get them out of debt and saving for their own home. And she has a degree in kinesiology?! She could be making big bucks working as a physiotherapist or a personal trainer!! But she chose to work in daycare, one of the lowest-paying jobs there is. And you can run a licensed daycare without any type of education. However, on the plus-side, they didn't have to declare bankruptcy and they both seem very excited about their budget and their plans for the future. Hopefully they've done well.

This is one of the few times I disagree with Gail, concerning declaring bankruptcy. Sell his "toys", and use their income to pay down their debt. If they are living debt free, they can put 90% of their income on their debt. Funny how when bankruptcy was taken off the table, they made a plan to pay the debt

Hobbies are fun, when you can do them. I see SO MANY "men" that neglect their responsibilities to play. Kids are great but expensive. Take measures to prevent their arrival until you are ready. It won't be long before their child is the most mature one in the house at this rate. This is where I go on my rant about a half year course in high school about credit cards, student loans, credit scores, budgeting, co-signing. Someone replied “you can’t teach a sixteen year old about mortgages, investments and saving’. Did I say mortgages and investments? No. Savings? Sixteen isn’t too young - it’s too late! My grandchildren get $10.00 a week all in $1 bills. It registers more. Some is to save, some is to share and some is to spend. One just turned nine and the other seven last week. And I use jars! Periodically, they buy gifts for the animal shelter or other charities they hear about. Once a month I take them to the movies and McDonalds. They each get $7 or $8 (never the same amount each month). This is not part of the jars; it’s being a grandmother. They budget their money which is why I change up the amounts. Last week they both wanted large fries with their sandwich but then compromised and had ice water. Perfectly happy and quite proud. Their money, their choice. I’ll never be an enabler.

@MrsEJV
@MrsEJV 2 жыл бұрын
@@sparkdorable Well, it isn’t that easy in the US or Canada. What we consider a “state school” has two tuition brackets, in state and out of state. Where I live in Delaware, a Delaware resident might pay $15,000 a year where as someone outside of Delaware might be $25,000 (I’m strictly estimating figures for the sake of an example). There are many schools more expensive then we top out with the elite and Ivy League schools that average around $84,000 a year. Schools have scholarships but only rare situations it covers everything. There are no free schools although there are community colleges and trade schools that are far more reasonable but have the down side (to many) of not having dorms or status so it’s a big compromise.

As parents, we are enablers. Lots of us grew up with almost nothing and with too many domestic responsibilities. Way too many "chores." So, we wanted our kids to have a different childhood. Guess what? We have kids who have never even cleaned a toilet or cleaned a house, or washed clothes. We give allowances so our kids don't have to toil for pocket money. We have helped them get college degrees--worthless degrees--like Women's Studies; Anthropology; Art History; etc... Yes, there are some jobs in those fields--but not enough to employ even 1/10 of the "qualified" people. They move back home. Any job they get, they just use that money like they always used allowance. They spend it all. We pay their living expenses. They make babies and then move their partners and babies into our homes. They rack up debt. We keep taking care of them, and we even plan it so they will inherit our homes and money when we die. And you know what "Fresh Start" means? It means that they dump the debt. We, as a society/tax payers/consumers, will end up paying the fallout of the dumped debt. Dave Ramsey. I don't particularly like his personality; but he knows what he is talking about.

My parents gave me an allowance - and to get it I had to do chores like cleaning the house or washing clothes or making dinner. There were other chores that were simply expected, like keeping my room clean or putting away my own clothes, that were not for the allowance. My parents paid for my college, I paid for my car / insurance / books / lab fees by working part time at night. They made sure it was a 'solid' degree and I got good jobs because of it. My work paid for my MBA, and gave me a raise immediately after I got it. They helped me find my first apartment, and my father taught me how to change the oil / change a tire and understand basic maintenance on my crappy cars. They HELPED and TAUGHT and ACTED LIKE PARENTS. Not enablers.

We went through this with our youngest as she approached university. She wanted to take Art/Design. So we had her research the cost of school, apartment, food, and job prospects. Then when acceptance letters started coming in, we had her research job and salaries for graduates from the schools. For instance she wanted to go to UC Davis, and was accepted there and to UC Berkeley. Historically across the board the salaries from UCD was about $30,000+ less for graduates from there than from UCB. So Berkeley she went. Also to lessen the cost of school we had her take classes at the local community College that would be transferable to UCB. It made it so her first year she went in during summer session as a Freshman, became a Sophomore that January, and started her Junior year this Fall. She'll then be applying to a Masters program as soon as she is able. Thousands of school dollars saved by doing that.

Yeah, it does. In the US until the '90s, you could do the same. Gail only told them not to go through with it because it was going to fuck up their parents' credit. Like many people in the comments im also a white canadian who grew up in a culture of 'move out at 18 or start paying rent' (I actually moved out at 16 and started working at 14) but tbh im quite against that culture now, esspecially in the current economy. I think what's more important than these hard 'trial by fire' lessons is to actually TEACH your children how to budget and save. Instead of sending them out with no knowledge where they're doomed to accumulate a bunch of credit card debt cause they don't know how interest works, teach them about loans, investments, the value of a dollar, and the nessecity of saving money while giving them an OPPORTUNITY to save by letting them stay at home. It is a better start to adulthood imo. I'm thankful I was a smart enough teen to save when I moved out but 90% of my friends my age (late twenties) have no savings or any knowledge on personal finance at all :(
@americandevo

I left home at 18 and knew to stay away from credit cards and to live within my means. That was in the early 1980's and people didn't have the same "needs" they seem to have today. I had used hand me down furniture, no designer labels on anything, no television, car or phone and I cooked everything I ate. People today think they "need" fancy cars, designed clothes shoes and purses, big screen TVs, cable, game systems, lap tops, expensive cell phones and many nights of dining out.
@botflyguy7814
@botflyguy7814 Жыл бұрын
@@americandevo Kindly, I don't agree. It's not what I see among others my age (classmates colleagues friends acquaintances) but statistically millenials are buying less cars in general compared to our parents generation and those vehicles tend to be 5 year old used cars, not even new let alone 'fancy'. We also do not give a rats ass about 'big screens and cable'. We stream our shows and get our big screens free off craigslist. Second hand furniture is also standard among us. Brand name clothes aren't a problem actually buying cheap clothes that break immediately is what this generation has to do. Thrifting and second hand is also way more standard. The amount of toys we do buy isn't worse than previous generations in previous decades. Most of the big expenses us 90s-born kids make are traveling costs. For me, visiting my grandparents in calgary is my bi-yearly big expense and I fly flair or get a ride when I can. 90s kids arent broke because we eat too much take out. When you moved out in the 80s the general cost of living was a lot less. Tuition was less too. When I said my friends have no savings or knowledge of personal finance, I don't mean they're living lavish life styles and only buying high end furniture, I mean they don't know how to accomodate for the lower value their dollar has and don't have plans to pay off debt or save for retirement. Thing is, the reason why most millenials and gen z don't know shit about finances is because our parents don't know shit about finances... so we didnt have those teachers. but our ignorance on the subject affects us more than it did our parents. I was shocked recently to learn my mom doesn't have a TFSA or any investments just because she doesnt know about that stuff, but she's nearly ready to retire and will do just fine. If I didn't start saving and investing when I did I probably wouldn't be able to retire at all. This is why I'm worried about my friends who aren't investing or saving. It's more important for us to be financially literate then it was for our parents. Thankfully, personal finance is now taught as part of math 11 courses (at least here in BC) so teens are learning about all this in school which is amazing!

Honestly I think they need to just stay put in the basement pretty much indefinitely, axe the plans for ever getting a house (unless they some day inherit) and the plans for having a second child, and focus on being great “roommates”/family to the guy’s parents. I simply don’t think supporting themselves and their kids in a house of their own is in the cards for them - but like, that can be okay if they work on being happy and content in their circumstances (which seems WAY more doable for these two). Not everyone needs a “serious life” w the kids and house model.

We provide 24/365 care for his mother. We do all the yard work. We pay property taxes, house insurance, maintenance, repairs, etc, etc. We pay all our personal expenses. I wonder how much better off Americans would be if they could declare their student debt in bankruptcy.

I wonder how much better off everyone would be if we didn’t have credit cards and went back to paying with debit or cash. Can’t spend money you don’t have

The problem with "student loans" in America is that people have discovered they can borrow as much as they want and they use the loans to fund their lifestyle. Dining out, going on "spring break" buying cars, motorcycles, renting apartments, buying furniture, designer clothes, shoes, purses, televisions, game systems, computers, paying for cable, cell phones, utilities etc. They borrow 10 times more than they need to pay for tuition and books then WHINE about their student loan debt as they work a part time job at Starbucks because they graduated with a USELESS degree. Many never finish their education and fail to graduate. Nobody's "student loans" should ever be forgiven or written off in bankruptcy.
