Paraguay might be one of the world’s first countries to lose its rainforest because of a confluence of factors including inequality, corruption, drug trafficking, and climate change. The South American nation offers a stark warning for what the planet stands to lose if it doesn’t act to protect its natural resources.

This is the continuation of what I witnessed 20 years ago while consulting, on a WHO mission to assess the potential impact of increased level fluctuations of the Itaipu Reservoir. We left Ciudad del Este for a field trip on a yacht. The sonar detected no fish. The Brazilian shore was vegetated and bordered with trees, while the Paraguay shore showed bare soil, and no trees, with huge soy plantations in the background. I asked to take a small boat to see the shore from up close: the shore was bare with mineral/chemical crust covering everything. I could not find any aquatic insect flying or swimming and 20 minutes of prospection yielded a single aquatic snail. The industry of growing soy to export as cattle feed had destroyed this environment.

@@thyscott6603 oh I'm sorry I didn't realize there was a 6 year old watching vice videos. Well when something is in demand there are companies who pay for land or just take it. Then they destroy the flora,which also kills the fauna. These companies care very little or not at all about nature or those who rely on it,so long as these companies profit they don't care what happens to the flora,fauna,or the people who survive off the land. This includes but is not limited to logging companies,paper companies,and farming. Farming has become more about rich people buying the land and hiring workers at a shitty rate of pay,little or no benefits,and changing the land from just a couple of acres for growing food to about a couple hundred acres to profit,destroying more land,flora,and fauna.

@PG-3462

Which is more or less true. It's true that growing cereals only to feed cattle is extremely inneficient. However, the cows eat the whole plant, so your "15x" statistic doesn't exactly correspond to reality. Keeping the soy beans for human consumption and giving the rest of the plant to herbivore animals would be much more efficient (and to achieve this, societies around the world must obviously reduce drastically their meat consumption)

The sad thing is, weed grows so easily, they don't need to do it in the middle of the forest. They can grow in much worse conditions. It looks like the only reason they grow in the forest is because that's the only land that's not well-protected by private interests. They can destroy a patch of forest and nobody says anything, but let them try and grow it on privately owned land and they would get absolutely destroyed. So clearly money is more important to the government than the longevity of the forests, the country and the world.

Let’s emphasize soy and weed in itself aren’t a problem, it’s the vast quantities “required” to feed livestock (exported worldwide) which turns out many times less efficient than if we skipped the animals in the chain and consume those crops ourselves. By embracing a balanced plant-based life you can almost make sure you don’t contribute to the destruction depicted in this video, and at the same time live healthier and not hurt animals.

Better get used to seeing forest and wildlife species alike dropping off. As long as people worldwide keep breeding like rabbits it’s only going to grow, while resources like clean water and food become less and less..Eventually everything will become unstable. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Hate to see what things look like in another 50 years.. 🤦🏻‍♂️🙄

Easy for us privilaged first world countries to look down on poor farmers literally doing the only thing they know how to do to survive and make money. The corporations destoying most of the world are from our own countries and I garuantee many of you unknowingly support them when buying your luxury goods to live a comfortable life watching TV and watching videos on KZbin. Easy to point fingers at everyone else but ourselves. We need to be willing to give up some of our luxuries and take away power from big business which strengthen our own domestic economies.

@@g.i.wingnut740 Yes, giving up KZbin is going to help against the deforestation in Paraguay. I think people need to start understanding that it's not individual change that's going to make a difference. We need to organize and build political parties that will challenge the Capitalist ruling class. The working class has the numbers, but we're not standing together to fight against the greed. It doesn't help a few of us give up watching tv or eating beef. We need collective action to empower the working class and more evenly distribute the decision making power. The rich aren't going to stop burning the planet for profit out of the kindness of their hearts. We, the working class, need to stand together to gain political power against these mass abusers.

@@18booma this may seem off topic, but, it's painfully obvious to me that you and most of the other folks in here have never heard of Yuri Besmonov. All of you need to go listen to the warnings he gave the US and the rest of the world.

@@g.i.wingnut740 He's pretty obviously not a fan of Marxism, but he sounds like a regular capitalist propagandist to me. He didn't once show a link between socialist theory and the violent acts. He only gave examples where socialists were also militarists. I can do the same for capitalistic countries. "You won't believe the truth, even if I took you to a sweatshop in the USA, you will say it isn't so. You will see with your own eyes, people working in dangerous conditions for less than a living wage and you won't believe me." Difference is, I can show you a link between the capitalist system and terrible work conditions. But you can't show me a link between Marxism and militancy. That's because militancy isn't exclusive to communist/socialist states. I mean, you have concentration camps in America right now, and as far as I know America is kinda capitalistic.
@g.i.wingnut740

@@18booma funny you should bring up sweatshops in the US. There's also a lot of other forms of Human Trafficking in America as well. Forced Panhandling, Prostitution, Nail Salons and the list continues. How do I know these things? I am a trained Advocate Against Human Trafficking. If you will look at who is behind it, you will always find greedy people, Opportunitists. That's different than Capitalism. If you actually listen to the complete interview, you will hear Yuri's full story. But, you are probably to young to have any reference point for what he has to say.

@@MeanGeneSanDiego I was a vegan for about a year to lose weight. During this time I went down the rabbit hole as well, but when you look at it from both sides of the spectrum you learn there is nothing wrong with being a meat eater it even has many advantages. Factory farming presents numerous amounts of issues but we all have the choice on how and where we spend our dollar and thats far better then any vote or comment you can make and a better use of your time. So my advice take it or not is go and find something more personally beneficial to do maybe weights or go for a run or go outside and enjoy nature, find something more constructive to do with your day. And after that go enjoy a good steak dinner you'll feel amazing.
@PG-3462

@@MeanGeneSanDiego The best is to reduce drastically meat consumption, but not necessarily to our eliminate consumption at 100%. Why? Because we as humans only eat the soy beans, which only represent a small fraction of the total weight of the plant. If we were all 100% vegan, plant agriculture would generate huge amounts of trash which would need to be burned by farmers... The most efficient and sustainable way of doing agriculture would be to keep the soy beans for human consumption and to give the rest of the plant to herbivore farm animals like cows, sheeps and goats. And this is without taking into account that countries that are very cold, arid or mountainous are simply not suitable to grow cereals. Grazing animals are more efficient in those countries

"The soybean export market is largely dominated by multinationals (Cargill, Archer Daniels Midland, Bunge Limited, etc.) and therefore benefits few Paraguayans. Export companies and landowners pay little tax." - Paraguay's Wikipedia page. Any time there's a massive injustice like this, you can almost certainly find rich people at the helm, paying off politicians to look the other way. Organize with a party that will do away with corporate interests and you'll find a much healthier country. It's not about pointing fingers. It's about finding where the issues are sourced and doing something about it.
