I legitimately can’t see Ukraine surviving after this war with it’s demographics in my opinion, the population has almost halved since 1990 and the birth rate is at 0.5, although Russia is experiencing the same problems of a bad birth rate and lots of elderly people, it’s so much worse in Ukraine and it’s just the start

As I understand it, Avdiivka is the last major Ukrainian anchor point on the pre-2022 line of contact. If it falls and the Ukrainians failed to build up an adequate new line of defence, then that could result in a disproportional increase of duress on Ukrainian forces deployed in the Donetsk region. Meanwhile, the Russians would enjoy improved logistics in the vicinity and would have increased operational freedom. This could mean that the Ukrainians might have to strip down some other parts of the front to keep this area secure, which in turn might provide the Russians with some opportunities to exploit. Ukraine really is in an unenviable position.

Don't take damn everything that "popular media" says at the face value. Zelensky and Zaluzhnyy disagreeing with each other doesn't indicate a "conflict". So far no evidence of a "conflict" was given by any trustworthy source. A president of a country during the war changing or replacing the generals is a perfectly normal practise, to find and try out other strategies

The thing about Bakhmut is that Russia decided to use a meatgrinder battle to distract Ukraine, and because of that they managed to build up defenses in Zaporizhzhia, which stalled the Ukrainian counteroffensive. Now the same pattern is repeating in Avdiivka, and more defenses are being built. Even though Ukraine is making a heroic effort to stall the Russians at Avdiivka, it's just playing into Russia's strategy to stall them taking back their land. Sacrificing Avdiivka would allow Ukraine to regroup, and even though they will be pushed back a bit, they will be in a much better shape to face off Russia if they're going to break the stalemate, and the latter will be worse off.

Retreating out of Avdiivka is not and option anymore the russians are just 1 kilometer away from linking up with the south thereby creating a physical encirclement but now a withdrawal would mean attack those forces while being attacked in your back and sides and with that losing 70% to 90% of your troops if not all with that surrendering eventually will lead to more chance that more troops will go home someday during a exchange of POW's

Because they'd need to organize new offensive and prepare it's troops, it will take time and Ukraine will prepare for it, it will also double the cost of war, while right now Russia is spending only to attack on Donbass and southern Ukraine. And also, Russia has failed northern front in the beginning, so, perhaps generals are just feared of it. As a Russian citizen, I can say, that it's not possible in a near future to start new phase of invasion, cause our news don't say anything about it.

Вот основные: Думаю расчет на "мягкое" завоевание северных областей, по принципу Крыма, но к этому вернутся когда будет контролироваться юг или посыпится весь фронт. 1)Есть основания полагать, что существуют некие договоренности по которым обе стороны конфликта не особо "шумят" на северных территориях. 2)Так же для компании на севере потребуется еще 500 тысяч солдат или даже больше. В настоящий момент в этом нет необходимости, можно медленно дожимать с текущими силами . 3) Северные территории не особо ценные, там нет полезных ископаемых как на Донбассе и климат хуже для посевных полей. Лояльное население с севера можно перевезти на свою территорию, как это сделали в Херсоне. С другой стороны атака с севера выгоднее потому что проще. СССР наступал именно по этим территориям вынудив немцев во второй мировой войне, отступить с юга, чтобы не попасть в окружение. Но для такого финта требуются миллионные армии.

well, luckily avdiivka holds very little strategic importance and is more of a symbolic battle, adding onto the russian casualties making the battle basically not even worth it, though i hope ukraine will continue keeping up their defense.
