Real Rap With Reynolds

Күн бұрын

This week was a tough one. By Friday I left school and drove to the beach with the family and a couple coworkers to unwind.
A lot of great stuff happened in class this week too. Projects were presented, lots of visitors came in, and a lot of relationships were deepened.

As a black woman, I am so proud that you are reaching out and showing your students how to treat women. This is amazing! Also, I am so glad that you said that you started teaching later in life bc I am going to be graduating at the age of 31, two kids, and a husband. There were plenty of times that I thought I had no business trying to be a teacher, so thank you! Tell your students they can do anything! I am a veteran, a domestic abuse survivor, and soon to be a teacher. Their limit is as far as the sky!!!!

You're going to be an awesome teacher! You have what the younger teachers don't- experience! I went back to school to be a teacher in my 30s with a husband and three kids to take care of. Those were definitely tough times. I started teaching at the old age of 38! 😱and it's been great! Very demanding, but videos like this are incredibly inspiring, motivating, and so, so helpful! 😊

I about died at the castrating animals and snake blood shots! Too funny! I loved seeing your students here. They are a riot. I was 27 as well when I started teaching. I had a communications degree that was basically worthless--until now. I run the school website and am the unofficial school photographer.

First of all, I am so glad that you touched on the fact that you had a crappy day. Sometimes, I feel like I am the only teacher that has crappy days because colleagues never share insight to what's going on in their classroom and teachers online seem like they've got it all together! When I was watching this video, I thought to myself "Wow Reynold's really just has it together every single day" and then I got to the part where you mentioned that your lunch group was rowdy and your day wasn't the best. That made me feel better about my own crappy days because i did not feel so alone. I would LOVE a video on how you take your student's abroad. It is something that I would want to do in the future when I have been teaching longer.

It’s a little insulting to compliment black people about being well spoken. It kinda implies that most black people aren’t well spoken. Which we all know is racist nonsense.

I just read an excerpt and now I feel like I should read the book you suggested “Teach Like Your Hair is on Fire.” Last year my overhead projector was literally smoking and I was just so into the lesson with my kids they had to yell at me that it was almost on fire. Obviously that was the end of the lesson - and the overhead projector. I enjoy your content and realness of your vlogs. Thanks for sharing!

Yes! Please do a video on how teachers can take students on trips overseas...or even outside their own state. I'm a native NY who is now teaching in the Midwest and I have a lot of students who have never been outside of their own state. Therefore a lot of them have stereotypes about NYers and other people who are not from the midwest. They always ask me why I left NY and it's hard to explain to them because no matter how I explain it to them, they either don't understand or don't want to listen (I have a feeling it's the latter).

Thanks for the bit about having lunch with your students and needing it to be chill. I've been having my students eat in my room this year and they've been loving it! Sometimes, though, my 5th graders get a bit rowdy. I'd hate to ask them to leave, but i know i need to if they get to be too crazy. I also don't want to kick all the boys out because they are just more energetic than the girls and it'd be weird if it was just me and the girls. Anyway, do you have any tips about what to say to them once they get rowdy, or do you just ask them to leave? Thanks CJ!

Marilyn Manson's got star quality. Thank you for sharing your lessons - great ideas coming this way. Like to see how you scaffold the children's books. Great idea to have it very structured and have them develop certain parts of the plot on specific pages. Would make it much less biased to assess. I also loved the point you made about balancing putting YOUR needs before the student needs. I throw all of myself into this and I burn out.

Another awesome video full of tips and reflection. Regarding your lunch hangout, have you considered a student pact? Students who break the pact must earn back the lunch privilege. The students can come up with specifics. On another note, it's almost fall break on this side of the universe - a time to sleep in and party like it's 1999 - teacher style!

I was an "under the radar" kid. Reynolds reminds me of my former physics teacher. They both just show that you're noticed, you are loved, and you're in a safe place to just talk and I won't judge you. I was not an incarcerated kid but just a kid who wasn't getting much attention from my parents aside from academics.
