I found your channel yesterday when I was searching for high school teacher videos (I’m considering becoming a French or English high school teacher), and it quickly became my favorite channel. I’ve been binge watching. You are very inspiring, and it’s refreshing to see someone who is so intentionally positive and caring. I am not a teacher yet, but I feel like your videos already apply to my life. Thank you for taking the time to put this content out there.

As a student, my writers journal was one of my favorite things from literature class. I still have it and occasionally read from it to my current students. I love it!

I was so happy to see how your students responded to the assignment that you weren't too keen on. It's even a great lesson for students to show how when you HAVE to do something (either at home, a job, school), you make it YOURS and OWN it for your own mental sanity. You seem in better spirits, and as a new teacher I guess it worries me that if you get a really tough year, things do get better. Love the way you edit, it must take a long time and it really pays off. Thanks for the work you put into this!

Just revisiting this one about journals. Do you have a back and forth with your students in any way with this journals? Do you make them into an actual dialog between you? Or do they just write according to instructions? What kinds of comments do you leave on each page when you read through them (if any?) How often do you collect and read through them? You inspired me to start this, and am now on my second year of doing it with one of my classes, but am not quite sure of if and how to turn it into a dialog. Thanks!

I'm starting a position in a secondary inclusion department (ages 11-16) in September and will be doing daily intervention programmes with kids for literacy, numeracy, memory, and social skills. I know this is an old video, but here's a quote I like related to practicing resurrection! “You must ask for God's help. Even when you have done so, it may seem to you for a long time that no help, or less help than you need, is being given. Never mind. After each failure, ask forgiveness, pick yourself up, and try again. Very often what God first helps us towards is not the virtue itself but just this power of always trying again.” ― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

A question (video ideas?)... How do you teach students with very different abilities. How do you group students in student projects. Also any strategies or lesson ideas on teaching reading strategies ("reading for meaning"). Just wondering if you've had any success / or able to make certain lessons mildly ENJOYABLE (or I'll reach for the stars and say FUN) when teaching like searching for context clues to find word meaning or drawing conclusions etc. ALSO a "grading & marking routine" video... any grading /marking tricks for efficiency as a high school English teacher? Because it can be really overwhelming. My associate teacher told me "WHY are you doing English? Just wait for the marking." and god I'm feeling it. In my first year I had 90 students write essays, I would mark the rough with feedback AND the good copy and just that one assignment freaking killed me man. I actually enjoy marking but it was soul crushing. I know I will NOT as thoroughly go through roughs in terms of suggested edits (or maybe I should not as thoroughly mark-up "good" copies) in the future but I am suffering from PTSD just from that one experience. I've learned to find ways to integrate MC questions into English classes (which I hate) but it's the quickest (and most efficient way) to get feedback to my students which is important. It's a struggle.

Question about organizing field trips: I think it's a really smart idea to make sure you're bringing students who can handle the trip maturely and have shown you they can. How do you let students know about the trip while understanding you'll only most likely bring a few of them?

I feel it out. Sometimes it’s 2 sometimes it’s 6. It depends on their availability to stay focused. Sometimes we will do a couple in the beginning of class and then 1 or 2 at the end. The rubric is being remade now. There will be an announcement soon. ❤️

I always want to use journals, but in my school system we don’t have a classroom, we migrate from room to room, which means that I would have to schlepp the journals back and forth each lesson. Trying to find another option....
@Yesica19937 жыл бұрын
Aw, that's awful! I actually have had recurring dreams for YEARS about this exact sort of situation! It's why I would never want a job that has a changing schedule of days or hours. I want to know for sure Monday-Friday I'm there from 9 to 5 or whatever. As long as it's the exact same days and hours every week. That way, I can't mess it up. Come to think of it... I did wake up late one time and was convinced it was the weekend. It wasn't. I had to call in and embarrassingly tell my boss I'd be late. See? Dreams do come true! But anyone who's seen/heard you even for a short time (like me) would never think that you just blew them off. I'm sure it was disappointing for those who wanted to see you and frustrating for the organizers. But hey, we all screw up sometimes. I can't imagine anyone who knows you even casually, even just through a screen, thinking you did it on purpose or because it wasn't important to you.

Quick question I know this is a older video.... so I teach 5 elective courses. I do like to have a bell ringer/ journal entry. I usually ask questions that help me get to know them as well. What I struggle with is ill have a student that is in multiple of my classes. Which is hard because sometimes I find myself having to write out 5 different journal prompts because students don't want to write then same entry 2 times in the same day ( I hope that makes sense) do you have any tips or tricks that could be helpful?
@Riedlteach7 жыл бұрын
Do you happen to have a list of the writing prompts that you use for your students each day? If it's too much trouble to share, then don't worry about it. I'm sure I can find a list of writing prompts online somewhere. Thanks for sharing all the stuff you do, CJ!
