Will tell little of my story because it could help some one. I am 43 and have snapped my Achilles during squash match on May 30th and had a surgery on June 1st. Prior to surgery have read and watched plenty of advices. Heard many voices towards passive and active treatments with no weight bearing for 6 weeks and starting little by little as fast as in week 3. My experiences are quite different than Yours and these I came across before. I went my own way it seems. After 8 hours after surgery (open version) had to jump on my healthy leg back and forth to do some medical paperwork because this is how a medical system often in Poland works. Patients are for doctors not other way around. Had to deal without crouches because you have to buy them yourself when you are sent home. In fact was forced to put some weight on my operated leg. Not much and often but still... They let me out of the hospital same day, 12h after surgery in a walker shoe. For the first week this leg swallowed a lot and I was really careful with it. Put some weight on it only in a toilet;) Used cold compresses and started electrostimulation of my cuff muscle together with massages. After one week felt so good that started to walk around house often with my bare injured foot on the floor putting 70% of my weight on the healthy one (this % are not strict but are only my feelings). From the day I had a surgery I have not felt any pain unless I tried to change angle of feet (which I was avoiding as hell). In the end of second week I even drove a car with manual transmission to get to my physio. He was totally concerned and the same time astonished seeing somebody after Achilles surgery without crouches walking on his own with some bandage only on his foot. I was also little concerned because I did not know what is going on (my treatment did not go according to a book). Thought I could have raptured this tendon in a meantime although I tried to be really careful with it (in my own sense;) USG did not show anything wrong. I am 26 days after surgery now and yesterday I rode a bike to get to a doctor. I only lowered a seat to feel more safe and put a walker on. It was amazing feeling. A doctor told me everything is very good and I could even throw off one heightening insert inside of my shoe. Today my leg look even better and I even see slight movement of feet when I press on my cuff which is extraordinary. My advice for others would be to get a lot of information from different sources but to prioritize your feelings of your body and follow your own way - unless you simply do not feel it and do not want to take responsibility for it. There are a lot of processes in our bodies that go their own time which is individual and if you correctly figure out what type of body you have you can take it to your advantage and introduce some things much earlier than on average. Just feel and watch how your body reacts to anything you are doing and adjust if necessarily. Wish You all healthy Achilleses:)

Thanks for the info on the crutch on your good side. I asked another person why they did that with no response. I’m week 7 after surgery. No pain, very little tightness, good flexibility, extremely conservative the first 5 weeks. I feel good barefoot on occasion using crutches only 40% weight. In bed slow movement with the foot in all directions feels almost normal (zero weight bearing). When I go no boot, I expect to have only a small limp

I just want to say thank you for these videos! The doctors don't gibe much info about what we'll go through at home and I don't see a PT until after 8 weeks😐. I'm at week 5 (non op rupture in kickboxing🥊) and never would've been brave enough to try 1 crutch if I hadn't been following your videos. It's amazing how mental this healing journey is! Once I get past the fear and tune into my body, the weight bearing is simple. I do have a question, do you ever feel pain while walking with the boot? When did you know not to go further? I'm not swelling and don't feel pain except at night, my ankle feels sore and I might get slight burning. Wondering if that's normal. Thanks💞

Hello SJ, thanks for your videos they have helped me understand this injury so much more , I ruptured my achilles tendon almost 3 weeks ago now, it was decided it would be non-surgical, I was in a cast for 3 days then was given crutches and a boot with 5 wedges, and told to remove a wedge every 10 days providing its comfortable to do so.. I am able to partial weight bear and have got 4 wedges in now, do you think I should be in less wedges by this stage as it seems you only started with the 3? Thanks from the UK
@SJachilles
@SJachilles 5 жыл бұрын
Reece Gilliver it’s hard for me to say because I don’t know how thick each wedge is. Also the uk seems pretty good at the non surgical route so they might actually have the better process. As long as the routine slowly gets you to neutral by week 8, I reckon it’s fine. You are taking wedges every 10 days while I didn’t take my first wedge out until week 5 from memory

I ruptured my tendon just about a week ago, but the method here (southern Sweden) is that you CAN put weight on the injured foot wearing the boot day 1, but not "overload" it. It´s really wierd seeing this video with this in mind. It´s 5 years old at the time of writing this, perhaps there has been new reseach since then, but I´ve been without crutches since leaving the ER. Anyone else having this method going on?

Hey, I´m at the 6 week mark right now and I´m doing pretty good, started weightlifting about three weeks ago, doing a variety of sets that doesnt put weight on the foot, like benchpressing etc. and cycling on stationary bikes. All with the consulting of my physio of course. I ruptured my patella-tendons (knee-cap tendons) in 2017 and I thought I´d never walk again, but I had a great physiotherapist after surgery and I took rehab very seriously, I was back at full crossfit-training eventually, doing frontsquats with 120 kg on, so get a good physio and take it all seriously, don´t cheat and you´ll be back in action, just takes patience! Regarding the healing part, as my doctor explained, the Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the body and it´s got this "tube" of tissue around it, so when it breaks, the tissue-tube around it re-news the tendon tissue, but it takes a long time. That´s why athletes gets surgery, to speed up recovery by stitching it together. Hope you get a speedy recovery, hang in there!@@2A_LEGOS

I have also been weight bearing at about the 2.5/3 week mark so I'm glad I am not the only one since I thought I might have done it too soon. As far as the healing, they did say so far it hasn't formed much yet as its still early but I am glad I am on the right track. I'm in week one of the boot with three wedges and am in a lot of pain still, but am not taking pain killers as they really upset my stomach. My surgeon said I can put weight on my injury 'even if it hurts' but I don't really feel ready for it - I am also wanting to take the conservative route and fear healing long/re rupture. Can you clarify what you mean by partial weight bearing? Where are you bearing weight - on your toes or your heal? How much weight? Thanks so much from Newfoundland, Canada!

Joanna Barker Hi Joanna, sounds like you and I incurred the injury at pretty much the same time as I’m just starting week 4 non-surgical too 27Feb. What has made a huge difference to me is the Vacoped boot. I was in the same boot as SJ and changed 2 weeks ago after ultrasound. Also my consultant is a big advocate of early weight bearing. I had a lot of stiffness for the first week. But can now walk 400-500 meters without crutches with my dog on a lead and negotiate stairs hands-free. It is so liberating! At week 4 I have the Vacoped set at 20 degrees and in a few days I can introduce up to 10 degrees range of motion. I still sleep with it on, but you can removed the wedge sole with a click at night time. If you are going to have this miserable injury, I would recommend this boot over the standard hospital one. Good luck, Ian from the U.K.

Anyone had this experience. I was casted and flexed down for 3 weeks for a full rupture after a game of tennis. Went to my appointment the doctor said I was healing extremely well. He put me in a boot but angled at 90 degrees with only one wedge. I was told not to put weight on it. I followed the directions for 12 additional days, but honeslty, after researching and doing watching some videos including this, the benefits of early weight bearing seem better. I started bearing a little weight on my left with both crutches and I'm not going back between two/one crutch hoping to be walking in week. There is some minor pain/swelling but nothing alarming. I'm just worried about him not providing me with wedges, although my foot was immobilized for almost 5 weeks. Anyone have a similar story.

I’m in week 2. I am able to walk with the boot and no crutches. So I’m thinking to go non surgical. I have till Friday to make a decision. But to be able to walk. Not having pain. Just swollen nothing major. I think I’ll be ok.

ladarrius robinson bro when did your swelling go down ? I’m in the boot since Wednesday and I’m noticing some decent size swelling in my ankle

Thomas Tripp yea even when you don’t have much pain you’ll still get some swelling. Keep your feet elevated often. Ice it threw out the day and massage your entire leg. When you able to walk without the boot you’ll still be walking like a pimp lol but try go swimming it been good therapy for me. I dont know if it’s just my skin but that swelling has my skin around my ankles peeling a little.

i raptured my achilles on the left foot, for almost 4 weeks ago. first 2 weeks: cast on the front side of the leg to have a "pointy toe" after first week, I slipped at the cinema and put the weight on the bad foot. /#%&W%/(%.... 2 week mark: got the boot on and started to put the weight on the foot right away. But I never load it to any pain. have been walking at home with no couches. On "longer" walks, I use the right crouch to help deloading the raptured achilles.

The one crutch technique helps a ton! I’m 4 weeks out, but I can’t hold my weight on the affected extremity 😢. I’m to get around better with one crutch though. Hoping for an improvement in my physical ability soon!

HI Thank you for your videos. I ruptured my Achilles tendon on december 22th and I am now at my 7th week. I get off my cast two weeks ago but I am still not confident with the range of motions you mentionned in this video. Do you have advises or tips to do in the beginning ? Is it to late to begin the range of motions in the 8th week ? Thank you for the answer.

Hi Abdelilah, it seems like you were kept in a cast for longer than you should have, assuming you had a typical achilles tendon tear. If I were you, I would definitely get straight into the ROMs now. Have a look at the ones I show at the end of my Week 4 video and try and do 5 minutes of them every hour. The one with the towel would be the most important so you can get the calf firing again. The first time will be stiff but you'll be surprised at how quickly the foot will start feeling better and more mobile. When you are ready, you should also attempt to partial weight bear but definitely check with your doctors first. Good luck!

Thank you for you answer. I try to do a maximum ROMs in a day and I feel great imrovements in my ankle moves. I'll see my surgeon on Thursday to take off my first of the 3 wedges. Thank you for yours videos it really helps me in my recovery. Good luck to you ;-)

Good stuff. The more safe mobile movements you to, the easier it will be once you are out of the boot.

My boyfriend ruptured his Achilles almost 4 weeks ago playing basketball but we just figured out 2 days ago form your videos what had actually happened! We initially thought something was sprained but everything you explained about how yours happened in video one was the same my bf experienced! This whole time he has been walking on it from the time it happened, we were only wrapping it then icing and elevating when he gets off work. What would you recommend us do at this point? I felt terrible when you said non weight bearing for weeks because he’s been on his since it’s happened and I doubt it’s healing any. We can’t go to the doctors because of no insurance. I’m going today to buy him a boot or brace. What would you recommend him to do since he’s 4 weeks behind proper treatment? Ps. Thanks for documenting your journey
