Winter Caretaking Adventures - Week 5: Boat Troubles, Ocean Learning, Caught Some Crab, Setting Up More Trail Cams! 🚤
This week brought its share of challenges and excitement as we continue to immerse ourselves in the wild beauty of the lodge. We hit a few snags with the boat, but after some hands-on troubleshooting, we managed to sort it out! We're still getting the hang of ocean fishing in this new environment, but we’re determined to reel in a couple of fish soon.
Matt took on a new mission-setting out on the kayak to install trail cameras near a salmon river, with hopes of catching bears on camera. The wilderness feels more alive than ever with the wildlife surrounding us!
Stick around for next week’s episode as we embark on a journey to discover a new river, filled with salmon, curious seals, and the elusive Pacific Pine Marten, known to the Haida as K'uuxuu. The raw beauty and energy of this place blew us away-it’s unlike anything we’ve ever experienced.
Thank you for following our journey!
Join us as we continue to prepare for the long winter ahead.

Your dinner looked yummy and the wine just makes it perfect. Gotta eat well when you work as hard as you do and get chilled to the bone.

Nice job guys. Here is a few tips when on the boat. PAY attention to that sounder and the chart. When you are putting the rigger out to fish, have the boat in gear and moving. A bad day on the water is not good when you are so far from help.Basically you are 911. Keep that radio on channel 16. Pay attention to the marine weather forecasts. Have fun, but be safe.

I remember being on my mom and dad's boat south of where you are. Dad said he was going to set out the crab trap and mom said something that sounded like maybe she didn't think it was a good idea. I asked her why and she said "Crab salad for lunch, crab cocktail before dinner, crab in your scrambled eggs for breakfast. You run out of recipes." I wasn't there long enough to have that experience and I don't have any of her recipes to share with you. Perhaps someone else has some recipes for you.

You guys are so cool! For food: In your situation I would make an 'eternity bowl' of lean sourdough to be kept in the fridge and you just take dough out and give it a rise to bake and then you substtitute new ingredients to the dough for what you take out. You can form it to buns using spoons (since it's sticky) or use a bread mold. It's really tasty and convenient. The trade off to more traditional sourdough baking would be the rise and the structure. Dough can stay in the fridge for like a week without any refreshing. Of course you need to clean the bowl once in a while. I really liked Matts speak for a change!

When doing a puzzle I look for all the edge pieces to build the frame…while I look for this pieces, I separate the others by color. I do puzzles all winter and love it Have fun with it

What about applesauce or pear sauce? They freeze well. For baking, apple crisp or pear crisp or a combo is a favourite fall thing for me. Not complicated. Edges first for a puzzle, but will sort out obvious large areas like sky when sorting for edge pieces.

Hi Emily & Matt, look forward to your commentary & lovely landscape videos! I'm watching your video from Charlotte, NC! I love to cook...soups, stews, chili...all those types of meals make great leftovers, use fresh veggies & you can season them in many different ways too! Baking ideas...have you ever made a galette? It's an open-faced rustic pie.

I'd want food and water on the boat. Puzzles are sorted by border and maybe color. Did you bring yeast for baking or what are your leavening agents? Have you noticed the days shortening? Carry on

We have lots of yeast and I have been making sourdough starter to add to things. Lots of frozen egg whites and baking soda and powder. Lots of flour and different types to use

We’ve been watching your videos for the last month and have been wondering why you brought so much fresh food with you. You told us today that you thought you’d like the preservation process. Just curious if there were other reasons you didn’t bring more pre-prepared, already-frozen food?

Good question, we didn’t order the food. We didn’t have a lot of choice, we got to tell them what we liked but had no idea on the quantity we would get. There’s lots of frozen processed vegetables in the freezers but it didn’t feel right eating the frozen food when we have all this fresh food to eat or process. The communication was pretty limited.

Love your videos, why aren't you setting your crab traps off the dock and checking and baiting them daily? Also, can't you fish off the dock also?
@Claysanabus

Hey! ☺️We have been told that apparently the crabbing doesn’t seem to be great in our bay, so they told us to try the bay next to us. Not sure why! We could try to do some fishing around the dock, I am not sure if the big fish will be around there. There is also a lot of large chains in the water ( all over ) to keep the helicopter pad and dock in place to

Hello Creative living in your area is a challenge but study the lifestyles of the coastal indigenous peoples to get ideas how they created natural food meals. From your boat gather kelp. Seaweed soup is a staple upgraded with mushrooms is awesome do you have any tofu. Foraging for mussels and clams is another. Poached apples in brown sugar and vanilla extract How about bananas foster with rum flambé using any fresh fruit you have. please stay ultra warm as bone chill is bad for joints always wear gloves and hats. Enjoy this adventure Texas Tom Outdoors man Hunter

Could it have been a whale breathing you heard while on the boat? Seems it was shallow close to you but maybe further out?
