Something I figured out recently is anticipating the grease BEFORE it appears. For example: If you know on day 3 that you'll wake up with greasy hair, apply dry shampoo to your roots before bed on night 2 and you'll wake up on day 3 with zero grease. It works wonders for me. Dry shampoo is most efficient before the scalp is saturated with grease. Once your scalp is greasy it's harder for the dry shampoo to properly absorb all the grease and you'll end up having to use A LOT of product which leads to build up. Anticipate which days are greasy and use dry shampoo beforehand and you'll be good to go with completely dry roots.

I second this! My hair is thin and fine, so applying dry shampoo on Day 2 at night is SO essential! And keeps the major grease from setting in and making it harder to get rid of. =)

I also found adding dry shampoo before working out helps absorb the sweat and minimize greasiness!

This is a new concept for me. I found this video so informative. I am pushing 60 and able to grow my hair long again after having had it short for a decade or so (having my 4th baby at 38 really did a number on my hair but he was worth it). I never knew how bad water was for my hair. I had been instinctively avoiding washing it every day and using hair oils for protection because I live in west Texas in the high desert and it is very dry and I am outside a lot so my hair spends much time oiled and under a hat. But you gave me some ideas for having it look nice more of the time without washing it more.Thank you so much!

Your videos have been such an inspiration to me to create a solid hair routine to get my hair in the best shape possible. I'm now to the point where I'm only washing it twice a week (my hair stylist who colors my hair red thanks you, lol) and my hair couldn't be healthier. It's growing so fast and definitely getting stronger. My color is lasting so much longer. Keep the tips coming and I would love to see an updated wash routine. Love your videos!!!

I’ve been following the 7 day wash day for the past few months and love it! I use dry shampoo here and there to keep the oil at bay and that’s it. Might start using hair oils for the ends & just ordered the ordinary multi peptide hair serum that I’ll be incorporating. Thank you for posting this video and showing that your hair isn’t always camera ready, cause that’s just how life is!

Hi Abbey I wash once a week, but I have a dry/eczema prone scalp and curly/course textured hair. My scalp never looks greasy, but instead needs the application of a moisturising scalp product throughout the week (normally every second evening). I use oils on my actual hair as well, plus midweek refreshing with a spray, leave in/curl cream and a little watered down gel - scrunching and a few pin curls for definition. I also tie it up quite a few days in a loose messy bun throughout the week, especially if not leaving the house lol. I utilise cute clips/hair accessories when I use an updo on days I'm out and about, just to make it look deliberate that it's up - not just couldn't be bothered fixing it that day lol. I mostly air dry even on washday, so if I need a little diffusing through the week for refreshing it's not a big deal. I'm disabled so I'm not doing a lot of sweaty workouts etc and don't need dry shampoo on my hair/scalp. Best wishes. ps I'm getting a cut and highlights next week - first since September as we were in lockdown from December to April. Can't wait as I have about six inches of roots.

Great routine, I remember when I had transitioned and started the hair wash day once a week, now like 4 years ago, and makes a huge difference in my hair health. No over washing unnecessarily. I still may not do all extra weekly maintenance steps cause I'm really low maintenance except on those wash days I do multiple diff things now. Wish I could get some even better products tho, super duper would love to try some ones you've recommended and use. On my list!!

My sleep hair is frizzy and unmanageable. Your day 7 hair looks better than my day 1 hair! LOL. And your hair looked amazing after your run, I live in a humid climate and I sweat like a guy - head soaked, body soaked from an outdoor run. Curious how the Redkin dry shampoo would do. I am very. New to this concept of not washing my hair daily. I will slowly give it a whirl. Thanks for a great video that I will watch over and over. Hair oils are a life saver!! I love the amika glass drops, sooooo thick and hydrating! Perfect for 4-6 day old hair. I think it’s important to note that you have to train your hair to be washed once a week. A lot of people get discouraged because it doesn’t work for them for the first few weeks. You can’t go from washing 4-5 times a week to once, you have to gradually decrease your wash days. Also, being blonde makes grease easier because the hair is light. Love your videos! Why don’t you use any amika or goldwell products? Do you not like those brands?

Thanks for the video! Random question: do you think (barring the hard water thing) you’d have to do this if you didn’t have bleached hair and hair that was longer? I bet those 2 factors make it smart for you do this weekly wash, right? It makes sense that longer hair would have more than could be damaged through living life, styling, & washing etc. Also, I love that spf shirt! (I looked in the description box, but didn’t see it.) Where’d you get it?

If this helps anyone referring back to this video, I would like to shout out my hair care routine because I really think it's effective • I shampoo once every 4-5 days, particularly at night (more time to style, etc) using the Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo/Conditioner. • Once a month I will switch out for the Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3 to clarify & the Verb Hydrating Masque to deeply condition. • After the shower I will use my PM Lavender Mint Conditioning Leave-In spray to help detangle my hair. • Then I go in with my Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil UV & Heat Protectant Spray to prep for my blow dry. • After blow drying I will finish off my ends with the It's A 10 Miracle Styling Potion (which is a cream product) to further hydrate. • Every single day after my first wash I use dry shampoo (any batiste one is fine) to prevent any oil breakthrough. • I style my hair daily in one braid down the back of my hair (not a french braid, just regular) to prevent any tangles & to keep my hair in place. • While I sleep I use a silk night cap & a gentle scrunchie to prevent my hair from getting frizzy or tangled at night. Hope this helps someone struggling to find a good routine!

What do you ask your hair stylist for when you go in for a colour? I wanted mine similar to yours, I went ahead and got to a salon, I asked for a balayage. The blonde blends lovely with my natural brown however, the hairdressers left out the odd chunks of brown to 'blend in better with the blonde' but this wasn't what I wanted. I'm just wondering what to ask my colourist so I can get my hair in a similar colour to yours. Thanks in advance! :) x

I love your channel :-D I have done as you do for years. I have long, wavy, curly, fine and frizzy hair and wash every Sunday. The full shebang with either the full Olaplex system from 0 to 8 or I use the Philip Kinsley pre-shampoo followed by either Ouai or Virtue products, always including a hydrating hair mask. I saw your video about protein build up and maybe I should do every third week a cleansing shampoo and simple conditioner to avoid protein build up? Can protein build up make hairloss worse? Thats my main concern now, I have for the last 3 years lost so much hair, like a handfull every week. I try to only brush it once a week - both to avoid breakage and because my hair is curly and frizzy and brushing mid wash makes it look terrible. I only use heat tools every other month if I am going somewhere (last year not at all because I have only stayed home) and always use heat protection. Even if I brush my hair really good before I wash it I can sometimes just drag bulks of hair of my hair when rinsing out at the end, and theres even more coming out when I put oil and serum in after I have dried it in a hair turban. It never seemes to stop falling out. Can I be over-treating my hair, even that I only wash and treat it once a week? Or should I try to brush it more often? I am over 50, so guess manopause has something to do with it also. I really want to acheive a full mane of long hair, but as its so thin it never grows as long as I want it.

Great video as always! And yes, I would love to see an updated wash day routine as you offered :-). Abbey, do you use the same "bondi boost heat protectant" when you style from wet hair or only on dry hair?

loved the video! how often would you say you use a damage free curl hair style? i try & do it more often than i use heat but i feel so silly looking when i use socks or something, is there anything more 'sleek' looking you recommend?

What a great video! Thank you. Just wondering, Abbey, do you sleep in the twist? I tried to do two twists on either side of my head (instead of braids) and they just slip out. I get tired of the braid-out look and sometimes just want some deep waves. Thanks again!

To get twists to stay, twist the two pieces one way, and cross them over each other the opposite way. 🙂

Hi Abbey! Great video! Quick question, when you put heat protectant on dry hair to heat style, do you make sure your hair is completely dry before styling after you spray it in? I would worry it'd fry my hair otherwise. Thanks!

I am currently at day 8 or so. I don't care about a little (lot) grease and if i make sure to treat my scalp with tea tree oil if it got itchy i can totally go that way without itchyness

I have normal scalp, so it would allow me to wash it twice a week, but could never get away with neither sweat nor reapplication of products to the ends. My ends get absurdly dry the next day I've washed my hair, and adding products to the ends makes them look and feel plastered. I really don't know what else to buy or do to keep the ends hydrated or rehydrate them the next day.

My hair dresser told me it’s not good to use hair oil on dry hair because it extract humidity/hydration… I don’t know what to think now. 😩

Oh shit, that explains why my hair looks and feels bit funky, if I use oils on day 2 or 3 hair! They might be onto something. But if I use oils on damp hair or if I mix a drop or two in a hair serum, then my hair feels normal. That's some paranormal hairtivity at play!

Hi Abbey!! I recently discovered your channel and I love your videos! Can you talk about facial self tanners? I definitely need some info because I don't wear any makeup and I don't want my face to look so pale in comparison to my body (which I have already decided is safe enough to self tan and I'm going to try). Thank you so much!!!
