Jumping Flash for the PlayStation 1 is a game that holds a special place in the hearts of many, including myself. Its innovative gameplay and charming visuals captivated the imaginations of players, regardless of age. The sheer joy of bounding through the game's imaginative worlds, collecting power-ups and achieving new heights, is an experience that stays with you. Jumping Flash is not just a game, it's a nostalgic journey that brings back cherished memories and reminds us why we fell in love with gaming in the first place.

You forgot to mention that Robbit can perform three jumps. Actually you stated two, but you performed three a few spots into this playthrough. Another tip is that collecting the pod letters in sequential order (E,X,I,T) gives you a bonus. The same is true for the sequel.

Someone else might’ve mentioned this but did you know that you can triple jump? Just press jump again after the second jump.

This came on the pack in demo disc when I got my PlayStation Xmas 1995. I remember the sheer amazement I felt jumping and boosting when the camera panned down and looked at the ground. 3d experiences like that were new at the time on consoles anyway. Great game.

I have crazy 1995 Saturn and PS1 nostalgia. I played both in their launch states. It was an interesting era. Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, and Mario 64 hadn’t yet determined what this gen was going to look like. So, it was kind of a wild west of game design time. And we got all kinds of different games.

A few years back, I have thought about starting a new series of playthrough videos, featuring Tenchu. I came to the same conclusion that Tenchu wouldn't be very engaging at all, unless you were really good at moving fast and making kills without being detected. I wouldn't recommend doing Tenchu for a video of this format, even though I LOVE that game series. There is a reason why you don't see many streamers play stealth games. There's also a reason why the stealth genre in general didn't last long by itself, and why stealth is now just a secondary mechanic in immersive simulators today.

The sequel is even better and adds environments within environments (like entering a labyrinth floating in the middle of the sky, but not loading a separate level) as well as secret areas, exposed by blowing up walls / objects.

35:32 Confirmed: Kaze no NOTAM and Jumping Flash take place in the same universe! You are probably right about how Jumping Flash was seen at the time. My cousins had it but I never saw them play the game. Maybe because it seemed kiddy?

I loved this game. Iwas about 10 when we got it. My dad brought it and Wipeout back from a business trip, with this one being "my game" and wipeout being my brother's. I remember intentionally trying to collect roman candle weapons for boss fights, but I don't know if they were actually really good at boss fights or that was just in my head.

The first time I played this game was the demo that was included on the purple PlayStation Picks disk. Upon starting the game I did think it was a game for kids but, out of the four included demos it's the one I enjoyed the most. The platforming mechanics and vertically of the levels kept me coming back until I had enough money to by Twisted Metal.

I'm really digging these Weekend Rental videos, I too have summer nostalgia for PlayStation as well as GameCube and PS2 (beach gen!). Edit: After watching this I downloaded and played it through twice back to back! This game I don't remember as a kid but I would have loved it. I miss games made "for kids" that were magical and good and didn't treat kids like idiots. I'm pretty lucky to grow up during the 90s where technology seemed infinite.

While Jumping Flash only had one sequel in the US, the series had a couple more games in Japan. I believe four in total, off the top of my head. The other two games are different. The last game being Japanese-exclusive really bums me out, since it added tons of crazy characters and story to mix up the traditional JF! gameplay. I played it, but I can't understand a darn thing people are saying.

I'm so glad you're playing this, it's been on my list to try for years! I'm admittedly commenting early so forgive me if you happen to mention this at some point during the rest of the episode, but in case you're looking for another off-beat, Japanese-exclusive PS1 game to try on your Xstation, there was a Japan-only third game in this series called 'Robbit Mon Dieu'. I've never played it myself but I came across it while doing a little research for potential games to eventually buy for my JP PS1 and it's apparently more task/mission and plot-based. If nothing else, it might make for a fun curiosity if you're bored one evening. Thanks again for doing these, Chris! Stay cool this weekend!

If you can't understand Japanese, the goofiness of the story and characters is lost. I tried. I can progress, but a few challenges are difficult to figure out or meaningless without the context of story. It's a shame the game never made it here. Maybe Sony thought it was too goofy for Americans. There was more goofiness in JF!2 though.

I love Jumping Flash 1 & 2. Am I crazy or can't you jump two mid-air jumps after the initial jump? Maybe I'm thinking of JF2. When I play I usually kill a lot of enemies with a Super Mario style bop on their heads and stock up on items. Isn't the music excellent in this game? I used to play my PSX with headphones and always felt these were something special when it came to the sound. Great stuff. Oh, and they is a couple more Jumping Flash games which were Japan only. One was a sort of spinoff on the PocketStation, but then there is also a third game in the main series, called Robbit Mon Dieu. It's still pretty cheap to buy the import disc.

Chris, have you ever doing this series, or another highly gameplay-focused content, as a livestream? I feel this episode was well suited, and I think live viewers and chat may enhance the content. And you know, the VOD will available for those who consume contet later, anyways.

1:14:43 "Nintendo had their mascot games, but Sony went in a different direction." This is the PlayStation ONE. Sony had to create their own mascots unless they want to pay for licenses. Indeed the Muu Muu aliens made appearances in non-Jumping Flash PlayStation projects and even had merchandise. Sony was feeling out how to make a profit in the game space, by mimicking its predecessors' success in the same space. They did exactly like others did.
