(Enable closed captions) THIS IS IT! It was totally unintended that the Waja would be my chariot of choice for what turned out to be 2,000 plus kilometres of some of the best driving roads I've ever encountered, but 'lo and behold, it was my 'old-faithful' that eventually made the journey with me, when up to 3 days before leaving she wasn't even a consideration... lemme explain.
I'd fully intended to use the Kia Picanto 1.1i aka KKK for this trip, for two very good reasons:
1) I was going solo so I didn't need a big car, and
2) The KKK is VERY frugal in terms of fuel-consumption, and the fuel we need to use in Thailand (Orange 95) costs about rm5-6 per litre.
However, a week before departing, Ken informs me that a friend of his is interested in the Kia, so I asked him to bring the guy over to view the car, thinking he'd take his time making up his mind, and I could still do the trip. But no. He liked the little KKK so much, he paid a deposit on the spot after one test drive around the block!
So scratch one Samui car. No worries, my back-up plan was to drive the Saga anyway, and began prepping the car for the journey. Get this, 3 DAYS before departing, I get an email from a viewer expressing interest in the Saga. We meet up nearby, he doesn't even test drive the Saga and transfers a deposit! Scratch Samui car number 2!
Kid you not, I was leaving for Samui in 2 days at this point, and I had no time to prep any other Weevil for the journey, so....it was time to fire-up old-faithful. Yep, that's how the Waja became my Samui Drive car. ONE day before leaving, I drive her over to Kenzone, get a full check done, and departed for journey of 2,039kms in total. KL - Songkhla - Surat Thani - Koh Samui - Danuk - Betong - KL.
If you've never done a roadtrip like this, you really MUST sometime. Just make sure your car is fully checked and prepped for it, like my Waja was! Hope you enjoy this video as much as I did shooting it, and do stay tuned till the very end for a photo montage :)
WHAT U NEED to drive into Thailand:
1) Original car reg card or certified true copy. Car must be in your name or u need a letter of authorisation from the registered owner plus a copy of his/her IC, front and back.
2) Passport valid for at least 6 months.
3) Thailand car insurance, which can be done/bought in Changlun at many places, look out for the signs. These places can also do your Passport docs needed at the border.
4) Not compulsory, but bring a copy of your Msia car insurance cover note, just in case, keep it with the car reg card.
Hit me up in the comments if u have any other questions about this! :)
