One of the reasons I love this skit so much is that the premise was so absurd and likely would have failed if they had used someone else. This was MADE for Bowen and he knocked it out of the damn park. SNL has its fair share of conceptually random absurdity sketches that, 85% of the time, end in a lot of scratched heads and "ehhh..."s. But god, when those types of skits are executed and acted flawlessly like this -- when the cast member(s) just go all-in, balls-to-the-wall, batshit crazy committed to the bit -- they are PERFECTION. That 15% of the time that they do work is nothing short of magical and this was the cream of the crop, I'm so glad I got to witness this iconic moment of SNL history

The ship was a disaster waiting to happen. Iceberg...Not Guilty! LOL

I think Bowen wrote it (Note: he did not, read the rest of my comment for the edit). He was a writer on SNL for a good while before he appeared on screen. He's so great! It wasn't Bowen who wrote it, it was writer Anna Drezen:Here's her tweet about it, it's great! twitter.com/annadrezen/status/1381134007715426305?s=20 . Thank you Jesse!)

Well, SNL didn't have any Chinese-American cast members up until Bowen Yang. They had Rob Schneider, who's part-Filipino, they had Fred Armisen, who's a quarter Korean (though he did think he was Japanese), and they used Akira Yoshimura, who is one of their stagehands who actually is Japanese. Bowen Yang, much like Eddie Murphy, is the first East Asian cast member to be popular.

i mean the iceberg as a completely valid point, it was white star line's fault for not providing adequate equipment for the lookouts and building a ship with a way undersized rudder so it took forever to turn and the fact that they would have been better off hitting it head-on than trying to dodge it because all of the damage would have been contained to one watertight bulkhead.
