Weeki Wachee Girls | A Lesbian Short Film

Best friends forever, Katie and Maura have dreamed of being part of the live mermaid show at Weeki Wachee Spring for as long as they can remember. It's the summer of '79, they're fifteen and everything is changing; especially when Katie discovers Maura kissing another girl.
This year is the 20th Anniversary of "Weeki Wachee Girls!" It played in over seventy festivals around the world. It picked up three “best of” awards and was a finalist at Taos in 2000. It aired on San Francisco’s PBS station and NY Metro Channels.
I made this film as an homage to my best friend who reluctantly came out to me in college. The world has changed so much since then and since I made the film in 2000. But I am reminded every Pride month that so much hasn't changed for the LGBTQ community and I wanted to make this video available for free for every teen who's ever struggled for acceptance and every teen who's struggled to understand.
I hope to be able to turn this into a feature length film at some point.

I first saw this film when I was 15 and in the closet struggling with the fact that I'm a lesbian. I only saw the film twice and after I couldn't find it anywhere. Now after 11 years I finally found the film that made me feel so happy and that I wasn't so alone. Thank you!

I still find it challenging to explain to my NY friends why anyone would want to be a Weeki Wachee mermaid! The closest I can come is that they are like the underwater Rockettes of Florida. So glad you liked it!

I was about that age at that time, facing the same struggle, wish i could have seen this movie back then. You got it so well, all those feelings just pop right back up, as a reminder that it's truelly (i think) about the same today: discovering that you're different, wishing and hoping that your friend will accepte you and look at you the way they use to do. 2 of my biggest observations from this short film.. 1. That pool seemed alot deeper at the beginning and end .. 2. Why the hell are Katie's knees so dirty? 9:23

Cheryl - Thanks for your questions. 1. The pool is a lot bigger! we actually shot the beginning and ending underwater scenes at a YMCA. I wanted a dreamlike effect and the feeling that the world opened up to the girls when they were underwater. 2. Katie's knees are dirty because she fell when she saw her best friend with that "lezzie." I hope you enjoyed it!
