The garden is looking fantastic. I bet the petunias are being eaten by caterpillars/bud worms. The DE should still help. I had hanging baskets full of petunias one year that were eaten to just shy of bare. The little caterpillars were so tiny too. Just kept pulling them off and the plants did recover.

Hi Kelsey, i discovered your channel last year and have been following since. The pink flowers of your retaining wall/steps at 12:11 are LANTANAS. I also have heard a lot of UK gardeners say that ants love woodchips, and that`s why woodchips are not common in UK allotment gardens as mulch; can`t attest to the fact because i don`t have a garden.

And I thought I had been busy....just WOW. And yes, freezer meals are just a necessity, in my opinion. As a single person trying to do everything in life alone...and trying to heal & maintain my body through food in a condo setting...yeah, freezer meals at the end of the day rock!!! Question: what kind of mulch do you use that you don't mind using around edibles? I'm having trouble getting my dad to use anything other than grass clippings and the weeds/grass coming through is awful.

I live in Texas and we have a real problem with ants, solution: sprinkle grits around where you have the ants. They will eat the grits and can't survive the swelling once the grits are wet. Sorry for the ants but we have the fire ants and they will eat you alive so I really have no sympathy. Anway it's non toxic around any plant in the world. Problem solved! Thanks for being here and sharing. You don't have a green thumb, you have 2 green hands and arms. Way to go!

@debbyplank2189
@debbyplank2189 Ай бұрын
@@seedandsparrowhomestead Exactly! The ants will carry it home, eat it and swell up and pop. You may need to sprinkle a little every week or so but it does send them off to ant heaven. The grits are cheap enough and it doesn't take that much. I have found it works on other bugs to, so happy hunting! Like I said I deal with fire ants and one of my kids is allergic to the venom. The pediatrician told me about this.
@debbyplank2189
@debbyplank2189 Ай бұрын
@@cynthiafisher9907 No not really, you need to add more if it rains or water but right now they're still cheap enough to be able to sprinkle a little everyday if needed. It really doesn't take that much, just sprinkle.

@@seedandsparrowhomestead they were Bonnie brand I believe. I bought 3 and had more tomatillos than I needed. I had been looking everywhere, so I feel your pain. The guy at Rural King even tried to convince me it was because we couldn't grow them in our zone, but we definitely can. The salsa verde has been a big hit here.
@cynthiafisher9907
@cynthiafisher9907 Ай бұрын
Your gardens are so lovely! The way you have everything laid out inspires me, so much variety and interest! It might be earwigs or rolypolies eat your petunias, or possibly budworms or slugs. I’m not sure ants would eat the plants like that. If you are able to grow the tomatillos, Jami at An Oregon Cottage has a great recipe for canning roasted salsa verde. I also use her tomato salsa recipe, only I swap the vinegar for bottled lime juice. So good! For the spinach, get some 60% shade cloth. I used it last year over my broccoli and lettuce with great success. About your potato storage…I wonder if it would work for you to bury an old refrigerator in the ground and put straw bales over it to store them? It would keep the rodents out and would have insulation against the cold.
