So apparently there's an actual Keystone Motel in Florida, and after this episode aired, some fans were leaving joke Google reviews that the toilet was frozen, their pizza was square-shaped, and the pool water evaporated. Even the Steven Universe crew was made aware of it; writer Matt Burnett called them out as overzealous, while supervising director Ian Jones-Quartey, who's now Rebecca Sugar's husband, basically said, "They probably shouldn't be doing that but I won't deny that it's funny."

“Feel weird on your fur” is a reference to how they defeated the cats during his first time shapeshifting but running him through the carwash. Though the cats have pieces of their own mind, he could feel what they felt so he would have that weird feeling they had when the car brushes were used. Though you are right on the off the cuff jokes(the shows I watch have so many of those types of jokes and they make the experience fun to discover them)

One thing i really like about "Keystone Motel" with garnet unfusing is the fact that they showed 2 types of anger: the very vocalized/showy/expressive/outbursting anger through ruby & the internalized/apathetic/cold/gritting your teeth anger through sapphire. There's technically a 3rd, and that would be steven: the kind that ends up getting redirected towards oneself, so it turns into shame and self-blame.

As a Pennsylvanian, I can tell you that Pennsylvania is known as The Keystone State. A keystone is the center block at the top of a stone arch, which keeps it from falling, and Pennsylvania was the center of the original 13 colonies, keeping the union together. Also, Steven Universe takes place in an alternate reality earth influenced by gems, so their world's USA has different names for states, like Keystone being based on Pennsylvania, and Beach City being in the state of Delmarva, based on the real-life Delmarva region (the tri-state area of DELaware, MARyland, and VirginiA).

The reference with "Keystone" is how every state in the US has an official nickname: my home state of Rhode Island is "the Ocean State", New York is "the Empire State", Florida is "the Sunshine State", and so on. "The Keystone State" is Pennsylvania. The world of Steven Universe is an alternate-timeline Earth, so history has occurred differently from the real world, and as such some States are named differently, like how Beach City is located in Delmarva, a fictional state in the location of real-world Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia (Del-mar-va). We did see Vidalia once before, in the flashback with Greg's old manager Marty. Except for Marty, every member of Onion's family is named after food: "Vidalia" is a breed of sweet onion, and "Yellowtail" is a species of tuna (I also saw someone once say that there's a "yellowtail onion", but the only thing I can find looking it up is a seafood recipe called "Onion-crusted Yellowtail").

Fun fact! The keystone motel is based off a real motel, and after the episode aired the irl motel started getting reviews by fans like "I tried to go to the pool, but the water was gone" and "Some people in the diner had an unacceptable behaviour". Those fake reviews caused the creators of the show to kindly ask the fans to stop I with the fake reviews. Also, Onion's family tree is very interesting! Vidalia used to be with Martin (Greg's old producer, you can actually see him with a younger punk looking Vidalia in Greg's flashback episode), and now she's with Yellow Tail the fisherman. It's heavily implied that while Onion is Vidalia and Yellow Tail's child, Sour Cream is Vidalia and Martin's child, given that sour cream is much more tall and resembles Martin a lot more than Yellow Tail. This also could explain why sour Cream can speak perfectly unlike Onion and Yellow Tail that speak in their "mamamah" language. Also idk if you noticed it yet, but sour Cream and onion is a pun on chips flavours

Idk if people have talked about it, but Onion is definitely non-verbal highly autistic, and being a kid, has no concept of what is perceived as normal which is probably why he is able to feed his snake and watch the one video. Also the murmuring seem very similar to how a non-verbal kid would convey, sometimes through grunts or gestures. Also I'm just having this thought now, the food shaped like Steven, it was probably onion's way of showing how much he like him.

While you're not wrong about most of that, Onion's mumbling is actually treated as a language in-universe. Yellowtail speaks the same mumbly language as Onion, and both Vidalia and Sour Cream can understand it. Sour Cream even occasionally slips it into his own dialogue, mostly when quoting his stepfather (he did this in "Joy Ride", for instance. And that's perfectly safe to say, mods -- Mosco has already seen that episode, and Yellowtail has appeared before.)

I's nice to see somebody annoyed with both Ruby and Sapphire. Sapphire, at a glance, seems more in the right because she appears more reasonable, but she's just as in need of a perspective change than Ruby. I also adore that Greg not only knows Ruby and Sapphire, but knows them well enough to be absolutely done with their sh*t. I'll admit, I don't revisit Onion Friend a lot, it just doesn't hit me too hard, but I do appreciate the exploration of the different ways people can be friends and support each other. Thermoelectric generators are a thing. A temperature differential can be used directly to generate electricity, it's not very efficient but it gets used on things like spacecraft.

Honestly piecing together Onion's family situation is kinda fun. They good example how Beach City exists outside just the Gems and their space magic stuff. And i like Vidalia's and Amethyst's relationship, they really seem like friends on equal ground in the way that Amethyst can't exactly feel about Garnet, Pearl or Steven.

So the Steven Universe....universe.... Takes place in an alternative version of earth. There are some differences, for example the country Steven lives in is much like the USA, but with 35 states instead of 50, and many have different names. His state is called Del Marva, for example. They also have Empire city instead of New York. Funny enough these were almost the real names for places in our version of history. It's basically a version of reality where the gems came to earth, showing howthings would be different. Like one map shows that russia is basically gone. Like a shattered landscape, as if the gems had, during their colonization, and the harvesting, or perhaps the war, destroyed a big chunk of what we would called Russiq today. It's never really directly addressed by the shows characters, (which, you know, why would they). But it was nice to have more complete worldbuilding than the average show.

I remember when I was in middle school to early high-school and it was right when they started actually developing the story for this show. The amount of hype online, the amount of “Garnet is a fusion?!?!” Comps, it was so so fun. I love watching someone experience this for the first time again. Makes me nostalgic.

Pennsylvania's is The Keystone State, which is what the "You mean the Keystone State?"/"Right, the state called Keystone" exchange is a reference to In the Steven Universe universe it actually *is* called Keystone

Pennsylvania being instead called "Keystone" is a hint that the world of SU is not exactly ours. See also the address on the front window of the Big Donut, "Beach City, DV" There's no U.S. state with that abbreviation, but Beach City is located on the actual Delmarva Peninsula. It's named after the 3 states that share it: DELaware, MARyland, and VirginiA, but it seems that in the SU universe the peninsula is a state of its very own.

Not sure if anyone said it, but the Red Eye did get mentioned again after it got destroyed, when the Crystal Gems first revealed themselves to Peridot she said something along the lines of "but the Red Eye didn't report any gems in this system". Also since you reacted to Onion talking to Vidalia, there's a fan theory/idea that Onion (and his dad Yellowtail) speak a different language, one that Steven doesn't know, and that's why it just sounds like mumbling.
