I miss Soupy Sales and Gino's Hamburgers!! Man, they had a hamburger called The Sirloiner, and it sure was yummy!! If I had the chance Soupy to eat at 'Betsy Ross' house or at Gino's, I'd pick Gino's by a long shot!!

There was never a better burger than the Giant! It came with cardboard surrounding it to hold it all together and then wrapped in paper. My mom fell in love with the Giant in 1971 at Gino's on West Chester Pike in Havertown, PA. Miss Gino's and miss Mom.

Gosh. I haven't thought about Gino's in years and years. As some of the comments here have suggested, their burgers (especially the "Giant") made McDonalds taste like... well, the "Giant" was better. And I miss Soupy Sales. I'm privileged to have an autographed picture. It's a cherished possession.

AMAZING to see this commercial! Growing up in North Jersey, my earliest memory of fast food was 'Gino's Chicken' (as my family used to refer to it). I used to think that the chicken had become so popular that the Gino's franchise simply renamed itself Kentucky Fried Chicken. Great, great memories.

Every once in a blue moon our family would eat out. And in a rarer blue moon, we had fast food. When we did it would be McDonald's, until we discovered Gino's! There was a Gino's on Rt 1 in front of the Menlo Park Mall. Their Gino Giant was the Best! Talk about a special sauce! That Gino's restaurant just closed down one day, 25 or so years ago. It was kind of a shock because they always seemed to have a full parking lot. In the last few years a "new" old style Gino's opened on Rt 202 across the street from the King of Prussia Mall. That location has closed too. Gino's was a great place!

very sad story because Gino's food was vastly better than anything McDonalds offered (then or especially now)--never understood why Gino's closed-the few locations I went to always seemed to be very busy

I delivered Gino M's "Main Line Times" newspaper in the '70s on St. David's Rd. I was able to catch up with him while grilling at the Ginos in KofP when he was open there for a short time. It was still as good as I remembered.

I loved Soupy---never forgot the story of how he was angry he had to do his kids show on New Years Eve and told all his young viewers to go into the bedrooms of their parents and take out "the green papers with pictures of presidents on them" and mail them to the station and he would send them a post card from Puerto Rico LOL--apparently the station got a lot of money and Soupy got fired. There was a near rush on that station demanding he be put back on the air-so he was rehired

Gino's was the best. In the 70's, my family and I use to eat at the one in Horsham, PA.. I returned to the area in 1985 and discovered it became a Roy Rogers. I went in there and ate for old times sake. Time stood still. I remember Gino's old motto was "Gino's is the place to go." Which lead to a corny joke, "Why doesn't McDonald's have any bathrooms?" "Because Gino's is the place to go." I know, "Haha! Very funny.

I loved Gino Marchetti growing up in L.A. in the 1960s watching the Baltimore Colts. I'd sure like to have a "Gino Giant" burger if they are around as I'm driving up through the east coast in September.............Just to say I had one.......Consider it a "bucket list" item.........

Before Gino's, you could get the 'Sirloiner' at 'Top's Drive Inn' (in the Wash DC area anyway), except the sandwich was served on a rectangular bun, sliced diagonally with a sauce suspiciously similar to what would later be known as 'Big Mac Sauce' at McDonald's. Top's was one of the first (might have been THE first) franchise to serve up KFC back in the late 50's. Look for 'Top's Drive In' on KZbin and you'll find a live commercial w/Milt Grant (local radio personality). GREAT food!!

Gino's later purchased Top's and expanded into the DC area. Back then, Colonel Sanders had his Kentucky Fried Chicken franchised into regional territories, Top's had the DC territory, Gino's had the Baltimore and then DC after the acquired the Drive Inn chain.

@wendyglowworm I don't think they made it much past 1980 or 1981. That was about the last time I saw one. The ones I remember were on 30 bypass in York, PA (I think near the Interstate 83 business loop) and one somewhere in Abingdon, PA near the Philly border.

Gino's is back! They're trying to open their first new restaurant in their old hometown of King of Prussia by Black Friday 2010. They will be at 611 W. DeKalb Pk. (US 202). Hiring started in September 2010, and they are looking at locations across the Delaware Valley. Gino Marchetti is heavily involved in the new company.

@MrDarchie - The company's website is ginosgiant(dot)com. The site has all the info you'll need on the resurrection of Gino's. They're now called "Gino's Burgers & Chicken", and are using nearly the same logo they once used. They won't have the KFC we remember, but are doing chicken sandwiches instead.

Some trivia. Gino's had great hamburgers.Made McDonald's burgers taste like dog food. They were good, especially there milkshakes. The fries had a home-made taste. The best thing about the Gino's burgers back in the sixties and seventies was the price. How does 25 cents for a hamburger, 15 cents for fries and I think about 35 cents for a milkshake sound? Gino's was named after and started by Gino Marchetti of the Baltimore Colts.

@Rlotpir1972 - Unfortunately, I doubt it. In Willow Grove, PA, the old Gino's building is part of the Big Heads regional tavern chain. In Horsham, PA, the old Gino's is now the one and only home of Tonelli's Pizza, after being a Roy Rogers, a Hardee's (and back to Roy's) and then a Boston Market. However, in nearby Hatboro, PA, there's an old Wendy's that's been closed for years. The only fast food competition in Hatboro is a McDonald's a block away.

@mediamadman747 Do you mean how were they able to sell it? That's how KFC really started IIRC - having restaurants agree to take his recipe and sell the food. Not sure when stand-alones really started, but most I think even into the '70s were subsidiary to some other restaurant.

Probably when John Brown bought KFC. He owned the ABA Kentucky Colonels and was Governor of the state later on. He was also married to former Miss America Phyllis George who was the first female host of CBS's NFL Today.
