Brian Setzer (the musician) once seriously stated that Weird Al was the most talented musician he’s ever heard, due to the fact that he parodies nearly every single genre and dozens of artists and he excels at performing all of their styles. Tons of his original songs are excellent too.

I stood in line to get into San Diego Comic Con behind Weird Al about 20-25 years ago (wasn’t a long line, like 10 mins), super nice guy. Totally humble, friendly, was just there as a general person not in a panel or at a booth or anything, just joked around with the people in line around him, and then waved and went on his way like a normal person. Total class act.

I like to believe that when Weird Al walked in to film this, he was like "Alright, guys. How do you want to do this?" To which they replied "Start with your best impression of Rivers. And as the song goes on, just slowly become Weird Al. Then when the keyboard solo hits, everybody just lose their minds. Sound good?" And voila, we have Africa by Weezer

It's so crazy to me that when I was a kid, in the 80's, I wrote Weird Al a letter, and he sent a hand written response with a picture and an autograph. I just need to say that this video is my go-to video when I am sad or stressed. The leg kick at 2:17 is perfection and I have watched it over a 100 times. The song itself is a cover that Weezer forcefully agreed to do, and nailed it. Then parodying themselves with Weird Al is top notch. Using the buddy holly outfit plus the general concept of the video for Undone is just amazing. And also all of Al’s band mates nail the impressions of the Weezer guys.

I actually sat in a radio station waiting room with a young fella with weird hair back in ‘81 or so. I was there to interview for a DJ gig (I wound up being hired by the other major rock station in the market), and he was there to plug (in person) this Dr. Demento cut called Another One Rides the Bus. (That station played the single, but passed on me; the other station hired me, but refused to play Weird Al. The takeaway? Weird Al is known to the cognoscenti as one of the most creative artists of his generation, and I use a public platform to comment on him. Oh, and neither radio station exists in the same form it did. Oh - and just two years older than he, I couldn’t even think about doing that kick even as a one-take.)

When people say 'think of a great artist' from the 1980s, 90s, or 2000s, Weird Al is not usually one of the names that comes to mind. Yet, for literally decades, he has entertained us with his wit, ear for detail, ability to transform a song into something funny (and often relevant), and as this video shows, he has a pretty damn good singing voice too!
