​@@lilacgirl-z8wthe flute acts like a 'door'/channel between the spirits of the dead that are restless/seeking access into our world (and most often vengeance for the way they died) These spirits are his source of power, the demons in the title of the book/TV series. Wei controls them with the flute, but it requires a lot of mental control/concentration, so when he loses concentration they can 'leak' through. It's also implied that these spirits affect his mind, perhaps sending him crazy at times of great stress.

Is it just me or does this song actually work better for Wen Qing or Meng Yao than it does for Wei Wuxian?

Maybe some lines seem a little off and more fitting for Meng Yao but the part about 'burning all the witches, even if you aren't one' is totally Wei Wuxian. The thing is since this not a song made for the character so obviously it won't fit perfectly.
