engine timing, low compression, and mild factors cam shaft are why hp is so down. not the intake. best hp gains will come from a cam and timing. next would be pistons or lower cc combustion chambers to counter the pistons stopping so low in the cylinders. a four barrel might give you 10 to 15hp. your intake eliminates the egr and your fuel milage won't go up. if your lucky and drive easy it will not go down much. fyi. this is basically a detuned Cleveland for tourqe. this and the 400 were only 170s for hp but tourqe was well north of 300 ftlbs. most common upgrades are an rv camshaft, intake, and more aggressive timing. this will give you the most bang for the buck. in the right hands these are verry good engines.

Great info Nathan. I completely agree with you. I did a straight up timing chain to go with the carb ,intake and headers. Every little bit helped the old girl.. The truck runs great. It's a nice driver. Definitely under powered to today's standards. But it has that great classic sound.

The only 4 bbl. intake that I ever used on this engine was the Offenhauser dual port 360 that was perfect. Also used the Holley model 3310 manual choke carb. Otherwise everything cast iron was mach ported & polished inside & out including heads and used the Holley 500 2bbl man. choke carb. Plus with the right gears, a real blaster in performance. Were restricted to use 2 bbls. in the sportsman class dirt track racing. All of those engine set ups were used with 4 speed manual trans.

Thanks for the great info! So far this intake is working well. In the future I would like to change the crank and make it a stroker.

can I get a shopping list? This is my go to video for talking myself into a 351m. Did you put Cleveland heads on? I Heard they offer better compression.

Any chance you have a link or remember the thread size for the freeze plugs you used. I'll be installing the same intake manifold in the next week or two and would like to source them prior to the teardown.
@RustedNBusted9 ай бұрын
I used a 3/4 freeze plug from Advance Auto. I had to grind it down fit the whole properly. It was all I could find. it was a dorman freeze plug. A half inch plug would have been perfect but nobody makes one .

I'd swap those multi groove valves asap. They are know for dropping, and taking out engines.
@RustedNBusted3 ай бұрын
I don't think it's the number of groves that breaks the tips of the valve . Its a matter of side load that will break the tip. The less groves the valve has the less the valve will spin .
@beecj03 ай бұрын
@@RustedNBusted Ive dropped two of these in two different engines. the head (large end in the chambure) pops off and wedges in the piston, splitting the block. the groove count is a sign of its age. Wishing you good luck,

Vinegar works pretty good. Get the real strong stuff at home Depot. Dilute it with water and leave it in the tank for a couple weeks.

Just look at those open chamber NO POWER HEADS!!! You can dump a fortune into a 351M boat anchor and it still will not perform like a 390 or a 440.
@RustedNBusted2 ай бұрын
True that! But try to tell that to a customer who wants a factory restored truck. Sometimes a low mileage truck with a numbers matching engine means more than horsepower.

i built a 400 ford worst engine i ever built heavy lots of friction and weight robbing hp and torque cost more to build too bad on gas wasn't good low rpm or high rpm hard on starters and solenoids battery cables but i liked it
@RustedNBusted10 ай бұрын
Yeah the 351m wasn't the most popular engine that's for sure. I definitely wouldn't invest any more than an intake and carburetor. I'll post a video of a 460 I rebuilt in a couple days. Thanks for watching my friend !

All this when you could have done a re-ring on a 460 and have nearly double the horsepower and torque.

But the truck didn't have a 460 in it. Only the 2 wheel drive ones had that option. This truck is a numbers matching low mileage 3514x4.. I like to restore them to their original character with slight modifications. Thanks for watching!

They'll make power. in stock form there a neutered Cleveland . 351m get such a bad rap. They don't deserve all the hate. Ford's most hated engine at least one of them. Good engine worth a build 😊
