The problem with these plants (at least with mine) is it grows it's wayward limbs during the early summer. So, we have to look at it's ugly form all summer, fall, winter and spring before we can finally prune it, just in time for it to grow it all back again. I planted mine just as the blooms were ending and it looked nice and compact. Now, early July, it's starting to look tall & lanky.

Totally see what you are saying! I prefer my plants to stay compact and collected, hence always prune back those with crazy growths early summer. Like Japanese Maples, Spirea and Weigela. This video was made in 2023. This year, I am waiting for big long stems to show up. If they do, I plan to prune them back as well. It is easier to cut while it is in a pot. Likely not as easy when in ground. In all, I'm with you in not liking the tall & lanky! 🙌🏻 Thanks for sharing!

Hi there. How long have you grown your weigela in the pot? I planted two Tuxedo Weigela over 2 yrs ago. Tag said it gets 5-6’ tall. It’s ready reached 3’. I want to keep it only 4’ so I have to do a regular pruning to keep it smaller. I was told mine grow on new wood & I should prune it early Spring. But I do a maintenance prune also after blooms are finished. They leave out again very quickly.

I purchased it May 2022 and it has been in a container since. Do yo have yours in container? Usually plants stay smaller than the plant tag info, which reference to landscape planting. Sound like you prune to size control after blooms and have been successful. Are you saying you prune in Spring and it blooms? or you prune just the once after bloom time. Interested in knowing! 😊😊 I am thinking of planting mine in landscape, only if it takes pruning well. If not, I will need to upsize the container, since it dries up very quickly in the Summer.
