Alan dude, it's amazing to think that you're literally the only one on YT to tell it like it is without bullshiting people or selling out AND you still manage to attract a large audience to your videos. It gives me hope that even though bullshit is a much better selling proposition, people like you still stick to proper reasoning and actually try to help others out with genuine advice. Alan, just wanted to shout out a sincere "thank you"! You taught me proper deadlift and squat form, and to ditch my ego from lifting. I had been dealing with tough personal shit for a while... i did, and still am 'lifting' my way out of it - and your influence is a big factor in it. I am truly grateful; in a sea of fake, bs 'influencers,' it's truly inspiring to find actual constructive influence. Keep the good work.

I think your theory is solid Alan. I was probably 220 or so lbs this time last year (I am fairly short at 5' 6.5" barefoot). I was completely untrained (I did bodybuilding/high rep training and was a boxer from 2003-2011 and then completly stopped) and pretty sedentary. I walk a fair bit at work but that was about it. Over the last year I began a true strength focused training program consistantly, 6 days a week pretty much without fail, and COMPLETELY changed my diet. I am now about 155lbs and I have absolutely put on a lot of muscle despite the rapid weight loss. I am FAR stronger and quite a bit more muscular than I was even back in 2010 when I had been training for years, although back then I was focused more on hypertrophy not so much strength. My max bench back then was about 190-200: lbs and as of yesterday I hit 245. Deadlift and squat back then were in the 200-225 range and now my deadlift as of yesterday (new pr) is 365 lbs for deads and about 325 x2 on squat (didn't test squat fully yet for this wave). This time last year my lifts were utterly abysmal at about a 175 lb bench and around 185-210 lb deadlift and squat. I know sone gains came from getting proper technique in check though as well, especially deadlift. I has super shaky on it for at least a few months. But yeah, I absolutely gained muscle, my legs and butt are about the same size as when I was fat, my chest is much thicker than it was as are my traps and bi/tris. I am blessed with great genetics as far as muscle goes, I carry a fair bit naturally despite letting myself go and getting fat but I have no idea how much I have put on. The difference is drastic though.

By any metric other than powerlifting goals, you losing 52 lbs, 50 of fat, and only 2 of that as lean mass, and very little skeletal muscle, you have a win. This is a ratio and trade most people (again other than powerlifters) would be thrilled to tears with. A cut of that size with nearly no muscle loss is phenomenal.

THANKS SO MUCH for mentioning that lean body mass and muscle are not precisely synonymous !! Something else that should be stressed is that some fat exists in organs which CANNOT be dispensed of, if you want to stay alive. AND it was great to hear you talk about how all of this does not matter if your waist is smaller, etc., and it makes your shoulders look broader, etc. That is if your objective is looking good and not only being strong. Vince Gironda, while a bit weird on some things, used to talk about the illusion of size and some similar things.

Eddie is an advanced gear using lifter. He would lose hundreds of pounds off his lifts a month post comp simply from taking fewer orals. Excellent post Alan. I think those numbers are awesome! Biggest challenge in losing weight is not losing skeleton muscle. It's a given to lose it - so it's all about the body recomposition numbers and you nailed it. If it were me - I wouldn't go back to being heavier - you can gain muscle and remain lean going forward and I'll bet you feel tons better with greater mobility.

The fact that you lost 50 lbs of scale weight, yet only lost a small percentage of skeletal muscle mass, seems to indicate the critical importance of heavy weight training for anyone who is looking to lose weight in a healthy manner. Clearly you didn’t just burn cardio calories and eat a starvation diet...but did your lifts take a significant hit? Is there any evidence to suggest that a program focusing on maintaining current levels of muscle mass (which in my mind precludes further gains) involves continuous lifts of the same weight & reps/sets over an extended period?

DEXA is pretty inaccurate, but it's much more simple and relatively cheap to perform compared to other methods. Short of dying and having all your fat weighed out, the only test known to be particularly accurate is a method involving a whole-body MRI (ends up being a non-invasive version of the dissection method). Takes a long time and is incredibly expensive.

My guess is the same, if it is water/glycogen loss then it will be back to normal after we go back to maintenance or lean gaining. Studies that measure the muscle loss also allude to similar concept but mention it as direct muscle loss to muscle gain
