Cheers for the video content! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard about - Dinanlinson Shrinking Body Approach (google it)? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering a weird waist slimming water to lose belly fat without the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my best friend Jordan at very last got astronomical success with it.

i was always told to eat protein first. i think this adds to constipation problems with wls patients. veggies first makes sense for wls patients also to be able to go to the bathroom. the fiber and roughage helps alot. so if you go regularly you can drop weight or maintain more easily.

At 8 weeks post op I was craving a salad SO bad! People told me I was crazy to have one so soon out but I knew my body wanted what it wanted and I had one! It was the BEST meal I had since surgery! Now all I crave is vegetables and I was struggling to figure out how to get them in. I am 10 weeks post op RNY now and I can hardly WAIT to start this method! I used to juice Kale and make green smoothies pre-op but stopped and went all protein protein protein after surgery...I'm so SICK of meat and cheese!

I'm 20 months post-op from VSG surgery. Sick of focussing on eating so much meat. Have been a vegetarian and vegan at times in my life. Didn't reach goal weight and the weight is creeping back up. I like your approach and will look into it further. Thanks for the hope you've given me.

Dr. Weiner, I just binged watched almost all of your videos! Fantastic!!! I have tried some cooked veggies and have tried all meats in very small quantities (beef, pork, chicken and even sausage) and I am only 3 weeks out. My sleeve doesn't resist at all as long as I plan out about 4 oz of food and chew like crazy. No nausea, no pain, no vomiting. I did try ground beef but that was kind of "ugh" a little bit. I have been on no nausea or pain meds since day two after surgery! I also discontinued all my antacids because I feel I was allergic to them. My nutritionist and surgeon say that most of these foods are all off limits and want me to cut my calories to >500, nothing but protein shakes, use of artificial sweeteners like sugar free jello, etc. They tell me NO fruits and NO veggies yet!! I am so frustrated! I went ahead and introduced some of these into my day including low carb bread made with almond flour and ground flaxseed. I am making my own smoothies/protein shakes with Genepro ( I know, you don't like that), but at least I have fat free yogurt and PBfit in there instead of all the other junk. If one has no side effects from eating veggies and fruits, nuts and blueberries with no pain, gas, bloating, constipation or nausea, should I consider them "safe"? I am eating about 80-100 grams of protein,

Thank you for maintaining this video series. I've come back to this time and again to get re-motivated in my fight against obesity with the surgical procedures I have been blessed to receive. Just because I'm gifted to have a built-in food policeman it doesn't mean I don't have to keep struggling against eating issues. Really wish I could manage the set point smoothies and stomach the blenderized vegetables but neither my taste buds or my surgical tummy can tolerate them. Still...I really appreciate your videos to help us post-ops cope and keep going forward in our health journeys.

Since reading your book my whole family have changed their diets - immediately feeling better - with more energy and almost depleted junk food cravings. I'm having VSG, and I've always been told that you 'need' to eat protein protein protein or my hair will fall out and I'll gain the weight back, and I'll become sick and deficient. I've just come across your videos last night and this is a breath of fresh air. I've been vegetarian in the past and I LOVE fruits and vegetables. I have read on the internet that eating fruits and vegetables after WLS was a no-no. This video has eased my mind. Having WLS is supposed to be for the health of your body, and eating all sugar free, chemical loaded, stuff I see all over the internet scared me. Thank you for these videos.

Hello! I just discovered your videos from a bariatric support group that had shared one. I am 11 years out (Roux-en-Y 12/2005) and wondered if this eating strategy would be okay for me. I'm pretty sure that my bypass was the more extensive one, the one with a higher likelihood of becoming malnourished. But I could be wrong. I do take vitamins every day. But I am struggling with regain due to an injury that I still have another surgery ahead of me for for foot repair. Thank you for your videos and contribution. They are very helpful! I was given rules for the first 6 months or so, then was told to just eat whatever was tolerated, and I tolerate just about everything. Reaching out to the office/nutritionist at the practice of my surgery has not been fruitful.

Hello. I find your videos extremely informative as I'm preparing for VSG in October. A couple of questions: Would you suggest consuming fresh vegetable juice in the first 3 months after surgery? If so, would that juice count towards the recommended number of ounces of water to take in per day? Thanks!
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 10 жыл бұрын
SugarHips86 I forbid my patients from drinking any form of juice - it's a sugar sweetened beverage and is one of the most fattening substances on the planet. Even the fresh juice made a the health food stores is bad news. I have my patients make "set point smoothies" which are different from juice in that you are consuming the entire fruit and vegetable.

I am so happy to have found you on KZbin! I am preparing to get the VSG at the end of March. I have been studying functional medicine, nutrition and holistic health for years. I am graduating with my BSN in October as well. I am getting my surgery at the Naval Medical Center and I am comfortable with the surgeons, but their diet methodology is so outdated. Just like it still is in nursing and med school, I guess. 17 years behind, right. My biggest caveat with surgery was that I was afraid I wouldn't be able to eat a high plant based diet. I know I can't be eating a bunch of raw veggies for a while, but eventually I would like a large part of my diet to be raw veggies and fruit. I was wondering how you feel about green juice with maybe one green apple to sweeten? I mainly use vitamix for smoothies, but I like fresh green juice as well. Is it just the commercial fruit juices you're concerned about? I will be using your nut butter yogurt recipe and smoothie recipe. I am so happy because I hate those premier shakes that taste like Carnation instant breakfast. I'm buying your book. I hope you'll do a recipe book too. Love your videos, thank you!!!

This is exciting to see. I had band surgery in 2006, and four weeks ago was revised to a sleeve due to band failure. I had been following a "Nutritarian" approach to eating until my band made it impossible to eat nutrient dense foods without throwing up. Am I understanding your approach to be that by the use of beans, nuts, seeds, and veggies, we will get all of the protein we need from our food? I prefer to eat this way instead of protein first. I also do not like meat, therefore, I have been eating things just to help me along after surgery. My 12th week after revision can't get here fast enough! I will be eating this way again!

Hi Doctor, I’ve just discovered your videos as I’m researching wether surgery is right for me or not. I’m a generally healthy eater. I eat a lot of veggies and home cooked food but I also have periods of bingeing. I have been doing low carb and IF for almost 2 years and managed to lose about 20 kg but put back 5-6 kg because of lapses and holidays etc.my question is , if I already eat healthy ( mostly) why am I unable to sustain it and Lose consistently and once I have surgery won’t I have the same issue? Does that mean gaining is inevitable ? It’s so frustrating that every little slip results in immediate gain/ bloating / tummy for me. How will surgery change this?

This makes so much more sense to me- I see so many people going on the keto diet at about 1 year post op (or 2) because they regain a bit of weight, and they focus so much on protein. They'll share the food they eat, and I'm like, "Honey, that bacon you're eating is probably wrecking your internal organs." I've actually started on this approach, since I really don't have a problem getting my protein in (though, I'm pre-op.) I'm dropping weight, and actually finding that I'm not hungry, despite only eating 900-1000 calories. I was actually told to increase my intake (nice problem to have!) If I have a day where I don't make sure every bite is nutrient rich, I'm starving all day long, and would easily go over 2k calories if I didn't watch what how much I was eating. I'll be getting your book, since I've watched most of your videos and they have really resonated with me as far as a common sense approach to post-operative strategy. My surgery is Oct. 4th, and I am SO excited and happy to be on my way to living life to the fullest again! Thanks for the help!!

I have had 2 different doctors and both say eat Protein first. I miss vegetables but manage to eat a few have not tried a salad as f yet as I was told to wait 6 months till I try to eat a salad. I do mostly just eat meat and some cheeses. I di not like greens I usually have my salad with just regular lettuce mix. Not sure what other vegetables that work best ? Would love some suggestions . As for protein drinks on occasion I drink mostly just for breakfast

I'm 3 years out from a gastric sleeve. My lowest weight post-op was 164. CW is 177. I eat a VLCD, so the idea of eating a ton of fruit and starchy veg scares the poo out of me. I don't do well on high-carb diets. Thoughts?

@apoundofcure 9 жыл бұрын
I put all my patients on the Pound of Cure program after surgery and have not seen much weight regain in those who follow the program. The program does not encourage a ton of starchy vegetables, but does encourage lots of fruit intake. A VLCD does not sound like much fun.

Doctor. Please help me. I have tried to follow your "Pound of Cure" plan and I just had the most horrible kidney stone yesterday. (I had 2 previously back in 1993, 21 years ago but I've been OK since . . . Calcium Oxylate) WHAT am I to do; I was losing weight very satisfactorily and now I'm at a very disturbing impasse. - - - George

gjdagis Sorry to hear about the kidney stone. I have not seen this as an issue in my patients. I would recommend drinking LOTS of water and staying on the plan. We have a saying in medicine that "correlation does not prove causation" - just because you developed the kidney stone after starting the diet, doesn't mean the diet caused the stone. Your kidney stone was probably present for months before you started the diet and was passed after you increased your water intake on the MRD.

If veggies and beans and fruit, do we need to try to stick to the 4 ounce rule? Of just eat until satisfied?
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of "portion" rules. Every body is different and can tolerate different foods and different portions. Initially after surgery you need to focus on protein, fluids and vitamins but after 6-9 months (depending on your particular body cues), focus on eating nutrient dense foods like fruit, vegetables, nuts/seeds, beans, etc..

I had RNY in 2002, the surgeon removed 9 feet of my intestine. What would you recommend for someone like me? Protein or veggies first? I get iron 4 infusions every 1.5 years due to low iron absorption & low ferritin. I take a lot of vitamins & supplements & my all my labs are good. I regained a lot of weight in 15 years. I need to lose at least 50 pounds.

What about the sugar content of fruit? I dumped over an additional 1/2 cup of frozen, unsweetened strawberries (6 gm) in a smoothie. The smoothie also had 1/2 a banana (6 gm) and 1 container of Danon's light & Fit strawberry cheesecake greek yogurt (7 gm). The protein powder was 0 gm sugar, unsweetened almond milk and that's about it. 19 gm of sugar of which 12 were from fruit. My heart felt like it was going to fly out of my chest, was dizzy & confused and soooooo nauseated. I was about 2 or 3 weeks post RNY and I took my 1st dose of zofran. I wasn't even nauseated after surgery. I have eaten apples since but fruit, for the most part, is scaring me. I go by bananas at the store and look at them longingly. My head knows they are good for me but that unexpected dumping episode is right there with my head knowlege. I have not used any of my fruit flavored protein powders for the same reason even though they are 0 grams of sugar (I know you don't approve). Veggies are no problem. I'm a veggie lover and used to be able to eat my weight in veggies (my capabilities at 3 months post RNY are definitely more limited).

Dr. Wiener, I'm 10 months post surgery. I've seem to have fallen off and feeling that I won't be able to loose what I've gained AND the remaining pounds I originally had left to loose. I've also been told recently that I'm diabetic and need to loose weight as well as having heart issues. I'm concerned about beeping healthy and have an insane schedule. What should I focus on more to get back on track and for good?

I need much more info to make an evaluation of your weight loss and whether or not you really should hope or expect to lose more weight, however, I can still answer the question of what you should do. You must focus your energy on developing good nutritional habits that will stay will you for the rest of your life. Eat tons of fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds and small amounts of meat and very little processed foods. This will address you weight loss goals and your diabetes. Also, it's very unusual for someone to be first diagnosed with diabetes 10 months after surgery - I'm assuming you've been diabetic all along, but have not had the 100% resolution that you expected.

How do you deal with your patients not going bald due to lack of protein? One other question, when cooking veggies don't they lose a lot of their nutrients?
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 9 жыл бұрын
+Stacy Eckel check out my video on hair loss. Sometimes cooking veggies releases nutrients, especially if it's in a soup or stew where you don't discard the liquid they are cooked in. The battle is to eat more vegetables and less potato chips, not to set the bar so high by eating only raw veggies that you set yourself up for failure.

Having my op in 3 weeks, VSG and I have been reading that the raw veggies are not good or watch the fruits coz of sugar. Only emphasize on proteins. Is it safe to drink a smoothie as part of your 64oz per day from the first week? What about juicing? When is it safe to start other than 3 months out?
@apoundofcure
@apoundofcure 10 жыл бұрын
Faith Monicah I start my patients on smoothies as soon as a few days out, but many other surgeons are against this practice. I think that patients should listen to their operating surgeon for the first three months. Then, if everything is going well, you can adopt a program of your own if your not happy with the protein first program that many surgeons use. I discourage my patients from juicing since it removes a lot of the fiber and is often times just as fattening as a sugar sweetened beverage like soda pop or lemonade.

I am one year post vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Two to three times a week, my food gets stuck in my throat. I must gag myself to bring it up in order to relieve the pain. I have begun to have cardiac palpitations when the food bolus is present. Both are relieved once I bring it all up. I know this isn't healthy. My bariatric surgeon seems has not given me a solution to the problem. I've had multiple tests resulting an impression of 1). Low LES pressure with abnormal relaxation. 2)Normal peristalsis with normal complete bolus transit rate and bolus transit time. 3) Abnormal EGJ morphology suggestive of a hiatal hernia. 4) No criteria for achalasia, jackhammer esophagus or esophageal spasm. 5) Findings consistent with EGJ outflow obstruction likely from hiatal hernia and previous surgery. I have had this pain immediately after surgery while eating even very small pureed bites of food. The doctor just wants me to take PPI's but I have not experienced heart burn/indigestion. Last visit was my one year out visit and doctor seems to ignore my test results and my complaints. Now, after taking Protonix for 3 weeks, I am experiencing regurgitation into my throat and nose while sleeping. The food is undigested and causes me to cough. If I sit up, it stops. I am so frustrated and I know this is NOT right! I believe it is time for a second opinion.

+Katiemakesfaces I don't think you'll have a hard time getting enough protein, in fact beans, nuts and dairy tend to go down easily after surgery while animal protein can be tough. Your surgeon has likely operated on lots of vegans in the past and shouldn't have a problem.
