Running the car's AC system year-round (for a short time even in Winter) keeps the refrigerant oil circulating to help maintain a thin oil film that coats the inside of flexible hoses, the compressor shaft seal, both schrader valves and multiple "O" rings. The EXTREMELY TINY refrigerant gas molecules can't easily escape through minute leaks in older systems before first pushing the MUCH LARGER, thicker oil film out of the way...
