I think the squat jerk is so popular because some percentage of people who get into weightlifting find out about the sport from watching KZbin videos of Lu and Pyrros Dimas. It's kind of like how in boxing the Philly Shell, as used by Floyd Mayweather, is pretty popular among hobbyists but relatively rare in actual competition.

To answer your question about dictatorships loving weightlifting, there are two main reasons: 1) Strength: Portraying your nations as powerful and masculine; displaying to the world your ability to overcome and to your own people the strength of the state overall. 2) Investment return: Weightlifiting represents a rather cheap way of securing as many medals as possible for the least amount of investment due to weightclasses. Same goes for sports such as Judo which is also popular in dictatorships. You need one large weightlfiting hall, a couple of coaches, and an endless supply of young people. Add in the ability to dope them to the gills and engineer a coverup and "Hey, presto!" you have glory for the Father/Motherland.

What benefit would there be to faking a back injury, plus it was shown that he was lying down with ice on his back majority of the time during his rest. This would be a disadvantage to the Lyu so what you are saying makes zero sense, it just sounds like you are hating on him for no reason. In addition, Li caught the bar of centre obviously he would be a bit sore after caring a 200kg+ bar that he of centred.

Why do I love squat jerks? Dunno, it honestly just looks cool. And personally, Idc about results bc weightlifting is the 4th priority of the sports I do, so I'll just do what is fun to me. I also used to have a better power jerk than split jerk, a long time ago. As for Lu, he's given interviews on it. He does it bc he is much better at it, that's really it. Sure, less margin for error and more misses but if you can go home with 20 kilos more in the total or so, every other year, you'll do it.
