I ended up converting all but a few of my Air piston guns to spring piston. In my opinion a good quality mechanical springs will outlast an air piston and shoot just as well. I have springers from the mid 80s that are still using the same mainspring. No way have my air pistons would ever get that kind of track record. One rarely gets a warning sign that their air piston is going bad. It just quits working. I do have one air piston rifle (Beeman Crow Magnum) that has been reliable. Most likely due to me releasing the bar pressure in the piston, so it can shoot fairly nice groups.

I'm an old fart who was there when it happened so it's story time, kids. This rifle was developed on request and in partnership with Beeman back when the company was still family owned. It was originally designed in .177 for Olympic Running Boar competition (that shooting discipline has since been dropped from the Olympics). The gun was built by Weirauch and sold by Weirauch as the HW98 and by Beeman as the R11. The blueing on these is spectacular but fragile. Wiping down the entire exterior with a silicone cloth and wrapping the cloth around any parts of the barrel that will rest against anything while in storage is advised. Beeman recommended using cleaning pellets (three per shot) rather than putting any rods or ropes through the barrel. The rifle has been changed slightly several times over the years and I don't believe the new ones are quite as accurate now as they were back when the rifle was meant for the Olympics - still excellent, but not magical. I bought a Beeman R11 new in 1995 and it still shoots lights out. Not one hole groups but same hole groups. An artillery hold, high quality pellets, a pellet sizer and a pellet seating tool will all contribute to best accuracy. I am a huge trigger snob and I tell you that the Rekord unit on these rifles is the best trigger ever created by mankind.

The recoiless Diana's are bonkers. They are a big magnum springer that behave like a PCP. They are a bit finicky, it took many different mods and tweaks to get mine to perform the way I wanted it to, but they are quite rewarding. My mods were to shorten the spring to around 265mm. These things are oversprung imo. Also put a TBT kit in. That took it from around 24fpe to 21fpe with far nicer shot cycle and cocking stroke. I added thin washers (sold as mudguard washers) to the stack of washers where the stock screws are. This allows stock screws to be torqued down more without the action rubbing in the stock. I also got the barrel threaded, and replaced the barrel sleeve with carbon fibre tube. These things are very loud out of the box and mine had me raided by armed police, so now the Donny FL silencer never leaves it. It has a real "thwack!" because of the action, but no muzzle report to travel and scare the Karens or the critters. There are many modifications done to these things. You'll love the TX200, totally different experience to an HW. They feel very smooth and refined and out of the box there's no twang. They develop twang over time, if it bothers you then put a delrin spring guide in. The TX200 and Prosport are probably the easiest springers to work on ever. You can have the guts out of them in about 2 minutes. They are much less hold sensitive than something like an HW97. The 97s reputation is well deserved, but it's less refined and definitely more difficult to shoot well. In the hands of the right shooter, especially tuned, it's neck and neck in terms of accuracy though. But Air Arms take things to an almost absurd level with their finishing and quality control. Apparently they order the highest grade Lothar Walther barrels, then proceed to grade them themselves, discarding those that don't make the cut, then they do a whole lot of finishing work on them, recrowning, polishing, work to the lead in ect. An Air Arms springer is an investment if looked after. Who knows how much longer a springer of this level of quality can be produced? They keep going up in price and it's only a small company making them.

Hay Nate! Great job on all the spring break barrel reviews. The Vortek product Co, in Michigan sells tune kits for the German spring rifles and some of the clones made by China.. These tune kits greatly decrease the recoil and make a better shooting experience and accuracy. The Ruger Air Magnum is a clone of the Diana 350 magnum. The Ruger at $200 plus the $95 kit, I now have an awesome accurate spring rifle with an awesome trigger too!

Hi Nate,a big hello from the UK baby, love your channel man, some people are being a bit hard on the rifle, but that's one of the best break barrel air rifles ever made in my opinion, it will last a lifetime with very little maintenance and I can assure anyone who may not see the quality of such a rifle that it's more than capable of being just as accurate as a PCP airgun with some practice, and the endless hours of service can be so rewarding and a gun for life and something to be proud of in my humble opinion, great video nice to see a springer for a change great shooting BTW atvb Dave

I often shoot 25mm groups at 65 yards with just about any break barrel gun, and not off a bag. The scope has to work well, and then it is all about the hold. Bottom line, zero force on the stock is needed, and that includes cheek and shoulder. If you can hold it steady,--figure out how to shoot with out touching the gun. Your 35 yard groups will become your 70 yard groups. I wish there was a national competition for break barrels were you can win money. I would take the YT testers money all day long, with any gun.

Some nice shooting, Nate. Beautiful rifle and one that’s escaped me, to date, but will have to be rectified soon. I own a TX200HC and it’s one of two guns that I’ll never sell. Your theory is spot on. Springers are designed to recoil horizontally. It’s outside forces that cause barrel lift or side shift. 👍

Tanks for your review 👍The HW98 is in my opinion the best break barrel on the market. I have mine, also in .22, for two years now and if you get used to the rifle and use the artillery hold you can shoot hole in hole on 25 meters. No PCP needed to get these results. The Minelli stock is just great. I prefer the more heavy 98 with the extra barrel sleeve above the 95. The only difference between the 95 and 98 is the extra barrel sleeve and the different stock. Beware that the 98 is made to use a scope only. No open sights on the 98. Yes, the 98 is more expensive but worth every penny. That fixed barrel air rifles with side or under lever are more accurate is in this case not true. I have also the HW97 and i shoot the same tight groups with the 98 as i do with the 97. Cheers!

The Walther LGV is an awesome break barrel as well, I've got one and it's just awesome straight out the box. I don't really shoot it much anymore cos I'm in love with my hw99s, I just love the weight, how it shoots, everything. I bought it 2nd hand for £160 with a scope, I've spent about £500 on it for tuning and a custom stock, don't regret spending a penny of it. I've got an old mark1 hw97k as well shoots nice but I think hasn't been serviced since new so needs a little attention. I've never shot a hw98 but shot just about all the other weihrauch air rifles, all excellent, hw90 probably my least favourite.

I have one of these in ..177, its a UK sub 12. I buttoned the piston and changed the seal and the spring. It was a bit twangy out of the box. The accuracy of this rifle has to be seen to be believed. I can consitently hit a hanging gold ball @ 60 yards. I also have a Gin-B special stcok for mine. Expensive rifle, but full of quality. The best pellets for mine are the JSB Exact Express, closely followed by JSB Exact Diabolo 8.44 grs.

Nice review. No doubt a precision rifle and worth the price. (As someone commented, a single piece scope mount is preferred on a springer to avoid scope creep.) At 70-years old, I have over two hundred air rifles in my ever-growing collection, a mixture of break barrels, fixed barrels and PCPs, of various makes and models and calibers: 177, .22, .25 and .30 caliber. In my opinion, unless you're shooting in a competition, there is no challenge shooting an expensive air rifle. Don't get me wrong, shooting a top-quality air rifle is enjoyable, and I have a few. And I do prefer open sights up to 40 yards. (I'm not too thrilled about using fiber optic sights.) Saying that, as a machinist by trade (now retired) the fun is taking a piece of junk and making it a tack driver. For any spring powered air rifle, its theoretical maximum power is limited to the cubic inch displacement of the bore and stroke of the piston and the stored energy of the spring. The next challenge is finding the right pellet for a particular rifle, or I should say a particular barrel's twist rate and length. The design or shape of the pellet works best at a certain speed, at a certain twist rate, which affects accuracy, especially at long range. I live in a rural area, not too far from a meat packing plant, and it has attracted a large crow population. Shooting crows is difficult, since they are easily spooked, and so it requires long range shooting, usually around 100 yards or more. And so, for crow hunting I prefer a scope-mounted PCP in .25 caliber. I bought the Avenger in .25 for that purpose, since it has an external adjustable regulator.

The rings you are using are made for pcps, on a powerfull springer your best bet would be a one piece mount with a stopping pin. Otherwise the scope will creep back, accuracy will be affected, and the scope will be at risk (but you are using a springer rated scope so no much worry about your scope braking). Excellent rifle though.

I have the .177 super tune it open the transfer port 1/2 mm more and I am shooting 13gr around 900fps. it will do the same group at 50 meters. You just have to get used to the recoil of it, as we are all spoiled by the PCPs we are using. @@ACshinealight a lot of people have had problems with it being totally inaccurate, me included. I found mine needs loose fitting pellets otherwise it sprays them out in 6 inch groups. I can take tight fitting pellets, push them right through the breach which makes them loose, then load and fire them and they are perfectly accurate. Possibly there's an alignment issue or the barrel is too tight. It's just damn annoying but JSB Exacts seem to be working straight out the tin.

My .177 HW98 laminate is no.65. I had to send it off to ARC tuning in the UK as it was awful to shoot from new, even the trigger group was unsuitable for accurate target shooting. Weihrauch really should do better with such an expensive premium air rifle. They ought to atleast make the internal parts fit properly with proper lubrication plus spend a little bit of time polishing the sears and setting up the trigger for a smooth target let off so all the end user has to do if they want is tweek the weight adjustment screw.

Great video what a really cool looking accurate rifle. I recently bought a HW95k that shoots very well too. Just a question when you took off the tube on the end of the barrel I was under the impression that was already a moderator it’s a Weihrauch moderator/suppressor/silencer? It definitely is on mine any way. Just asking not trying to clever or annoying and maybe I’m incorrect as this is a different rifle to mine. I’d like to know if you would be so kind. Cheers.

I'm wondering the same thing. Also, how does it compare with/without the moderator addon?

You probably know all this already but in case, if it was mine. I'd get a slightly lower one piece scope mount, with an arrestor stud. Mount it up with the stud in one of the arrestor holes and you'll be golden. Springers are harder on scopes than even firearms. Back when the cross hairs were wire they used to snap them regularly. Springers have what they refer to as two way recoil, you've got yourself the best break barrel in the world IMO. Hold it loosely and let it do its thing! Sorry for the lecture but I grew up shooting them, it's all we had. I'm from UK, Scotland and now here we can't even own one that produces just under 12ft/lbs at the muzzle (16 joules) without going through the same licencing process as a Shotgun. You can still own one in England without a licence but not in Scotland. We live in a Nanny state and it makes me sad. TX 200s are just very good refined copies of HW 97Ks, they come with beautiful walnut stocks, if you pay extra but I don't like their anti bear trap set up and pressing the catch/button every time you load. For me I'd get a 97K with the beech thumbhole stock, for a fixed barrel.

You need a one piece scope mount. That will hold the scope better. I prefer smaller scopes as well because Springers weigh so much. I have the recoiless RWS 54 Air King. It's nice too but heavy. Very accurate though. If you can learn to shoot this HW98 well I would just use this one instead because it's over a pound lighter. I rarely shoot the Air King off-hand because of weight. I usually shoot from sitting position, prone or benchrest. I also have the Diana 350 Magnum .22 cal which I love for hunting.

I haven't read all the comments however I was going to say I think when you unscrewed the end of the barrel and put your own silencer on. I think what removed was actually the factory fitted silencer. The early models never had one on but the newer models have one fitted......I think??? Just put it back on and try it if nobody else has mentioned it yet.

I absolutely love my TX200! It's the one springer that I don't loan out. BTW, re: Recoilless? No, the RWS Diana 54 is not actually recoilless. Neither is the Feinwerkbau 150 nor the 300 target rifle. What they do is isolate the shooter from the recoil by allowing the barreled action of the gun to slide backwards in the stock when it fires.

Even a strange looking sr900s, a side lever spring gun. Does it show i like spring guns?

I'm afraid I have a small correction, the HW98 comes in both .177 and .22, also, there are two different versions, the one you show here is the newer version, the older version has a shroud that extends all the way to the end, no thread at the muzzle, and a 10 cm longer barrel as there is no dead space. However, I believe the older version isn't produced anymore, but I managed to find one at my local gun pusher. With that out of the way, this is a fantastic gun. Without a doubt the best springer I own, or have ever owned. Mine is the older version in .177, and it prefers H&N Baracuda Match in 4.50. It shoots just as well with the same pellet in 4.51 and 4.52, as long as they've been resized to 4.50 mm. Grouping within a dime (Ø around 18 mm) with this gun at an acceptable range, shouldn't be too hard if you're a decent shot with spring guns, my best group was around 10 mm center to center @ 31 m (just over 100 ft), and I've even managed to nail a fly at the same distance - landing on my target is just asking for it. I'd say we're in PCP country accuracy-wise with this gun, or at the very least on the border. Personally, I find it easier to hit with, than my mate's TX200, but that might be down to knowing the gun better.

I had one of the first of these, it was so accurate that it would put 5 shots into a 10p circle at 40 mtrs. Only sold it to get a Falcon Raptor19 RS. 8 shot mag, half the weight, rabbits and squirrels hated both of them.

My Prosport loves JSBs in various weights, H&N FTT, and most pellets I've tried. H&N Terminator pellets are a nice little secret too. They shoot well, and I mean really well, out if everything I've tried them in, but are actually a particularly deadly hunting pellet that does a lot of damage. Not a lot of POI shift from you standard diabolo pellets either. I've found Air Arms aren't that fussy.
