I just commented that. It wouldn’t be a disaster unless you’re armed or land on Swiss shore with no permission or passport. The militant patrol groups themselves don’t know where the borders are inside the lakes, so they usually just let people drift around.

EU and Schengen cannot be used interchangeably, although there’s a large overlap. Switzerland and Norway are part of Schengen, but not a part of the EU. Also I’m wondering what language barrier they talk about in the part about Belgium-Netherlands. The northern region of Belgium, Flanders, is Dutch-speaking. You can clearly hear the difference between Flemish Dutch and Dutch Dutch, but we understand each other perfectly.

It is also worth noting that Kaliningrad was not always Russian, but was once a part of Germany, namely Eastern Prussia. And the city of Kaliningrad was originally called Königsberg, until the end of WWII when Germany lost the territory. My grandfather by the way was born there when it was still German.
@afookingarcher7195

I was born in Russian Kaliningrad. I would love to contact you to chat more about your grandfather's experience . I would be happy to share my own great grandfather's journey to the region after ww2, as well as share an ebook or two regarding the region. My note on this, based on my (posted above): Kaliningrad is not Polish. In fact, of all its neighbors, Poland is the least privy to the claim. For many years it was more or less Germanic, and before that, Pagan Old Prussian. The Old Prussians who survived the Germanic crusaders fled North to Lithuania. Due to this, i believe Lithuania has the greatest ancestral claim to the land.

I went to the area around Llivia last summer. I'm not even sure I remember going through the town, but I think I actually did, since we were staying in Puigcerda. To be honest, there's not even a "welcome to France" sign and you literally drive into France unimpeded on a small road that is ominously close to buildings. If this become a problem, it will be super weird, that's for sure. The only indication you are in France is the fact that everything is in French.

Baarle Hertog/Baarle Nassau is completely bonkers. The borders cut right through shops, houses, several places where you cross the border multiple times within a couple of minutes of walking. Belgium side has a lot of fireworks shops which is legal to sell all year round while the Netherlands only sells fireworks for 3 days a year. There's a lot of lines for the gas stations as well since Belgian tax on gas is usually cheaper.

Between Sweden and Finland, there's an island inhabited by both countries, and the border on that island sure is a weird one

If you mean Ålands, than it a bit different story. They are an autonomous region of Finland by a decision of the League of Nations. Though the language there is Swedish.

The Croatians have now built a huge bridge around Bosnia over the sea because they were charging people £50 to go through it to get to Dubrovnik (game of thrones fame) so the Bosnians now have a lovely sea view of a bridge.

You are reporting historically incorrect facts about Nagorno-Karabakh. In 1994, Armenians liberated the lands and territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and its adjacent regions. It was not Azerbaijan who gained control in 1994, they did so recently after the 2020 Artsakh War and are currently occupying Shushi and Hadrut (part of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast). Also, Nagorno-Karabakh has been continuously inhabited by a majority of Ethnic Armenians for centuries, something that would have been worth mentionning.

Switzerland is not part of the EU, but it is part of the Schengen area. Not all EU states are Schengen members. However, Switzerland does contribute to a few EU programs like the EFTA, which is allows Switzerland to be part of the EU’s single market.

Switzerland is not part of the European Union and Kalininingrad ain't bordering the Black Sea but the Baltic Sea. Two glaring non-trivial mistakes in one video. I sincerely enjoy this channel but it's gotta improve it's research. A thumb down this time, sorry guys.

10:36 - Actually, only Germany and Austria are part of the European Union - _not_ Switzerland. All three _are,_ however, part of the Schengen Area, which is the important bit for not-getting-arrested-for-drifting-into-another-country purposes.

Any one catch the error at 20:30 ? Kaliningrad is a port city of the BALTIC sea.. Not the Black Sea as stated.. Lol But no hate.. Love these videos. This channel makes History fun and entertaining. Keep up the great work. Fire your editor... Lol jk...

The video was interesting but sometimes too inaccurate (such as the dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan) and sometimes just wrong (Kaliningrad is by the Baltic, not the Black Sea!)

As zillions of others have pointed out, Switzerland is not in the EU but is Schengen. The practical effect of this is that people can move freely back and forth but goods are subject to duty. Of course, nobody cares about personal belongings but trucks need to file papers though not actually stop. The reality is that all these little quirky enclaves and exclaves are completely ignored by the locals, apart from getting something cheaper on side. They are more tourist and trivia quirks. I have driven many times between Germany and France and try to make a point of detouring to Luxembourg as fuel prices are about 30% less there. These small border towns have the same function. Technically the authorities can tax you but why bother .One place that is different is Andorra. As it is not EU one of the mainstays of the economy is cheap stuff. There are malls and malls electronics and appliance stores. The Spanish border to the south and French to the north is well staffed and they check most people's trunks. These border commerce situations are just prevelant in inter-state border sin the US. Here in the Pacific Northwest Washington state has a high sales tax, Oregon has none. Just over the border you find lots of big box stores catering to the northerners. Technically you are supposed to pay WA tax on the goods you buy in Oregon--yea, sure.
