I’ve travelled to Eritrea for work and the people and food are amazing. Asmara is such a wonderful city and their nightlife is based on coffee shops as opposed to bars (probably because of the Italian history). As you travel west, Keren is a very Arabian-looking town, built in the desert with sandstone buildings. Further west is just fairly arid aside from one or two mines it’s very rural. It’s a shame about their governance, as the people there are great and I wish that they had more freedom. However they still live a pleasant life for the most part due to their wonderful attitude.

Cyprus worth a mention. Is like a Korea situation but all in one country, with the island split right in half, one side being greek and the other turkish. There is even a DMZ style buffer zone between the two that is controlled by the UN as like a neutral participant. The capital city (Nicosia) is right in the centre of the island, with the border running right through the middle of it, making half the city predominantly Muslim and the other half predominantly Christian. On top of that, there are also two other proportionately relatively large areas of the island that are neither the greek or turkish side, but actually United Kingdom sovereign areas lol. Paraguay is often considered the weirdest Latin American nation. *Not trying to offend anybody, but that is a trait I've heard of. I second Equatorial Guinea! Plus how the current capital, Malabo, is on the island instead of the main land (thought that might change in the near future). NOT GETTING INTO THE CURRENT POLITICAL SITUATION, but just stating: Israel is the only country in the world that was successfully rebooted into a modern day nation state. Palestine is often considered to be the most country like non-country in the world. Liberia was originally founded as homeland for African slaves to return to. While it only partially achieved that, that uniqueness created a very interesting background. I believe Sierra Leone is similar to that as well. Mongolia has the lowest population density in the world. How Haiti was founded by the Haitian Revolution (again, not getting into current politics with it). Dominica-Both the Kalinago Reserve on part of the island, as well as the purple used on the parrot in the flag. Kiribati-both how the name is pronounced and how climate change might eliminate it one day. Belarus is considered to be the last dictatorship in Europe. Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Luxembourg, Eswatini, and Lesotho all have some interesting backgrounds! Comoros, Mauritius, Madagascar, The Seychelles, The Maldives Somalia (and the dispute with the more stable Somaliland); Djbouti How Somaliland and Transniestra are almost countries but mainly lack global reconigtion. Tajikistan The shapes of The Gambia and Chile Suriname and Guyana both culturally and geographically English heritage of Belize ***And while this isn't obviously a country itself, the special status of Antarctica is an honorable mention. South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore's rise to the top of developed countries in just a few decades. Angola's separtion with the Cabinda exclave.

As previously mentioned, Equatorial Guinea is kind of weird with its capital on an island closer to other countries than its own mainland. Another weird one Cabo Verde just because it's the only country on Earth in the GMT-2 time zone. Croatia's border with Bosnia looks like its bullying Bosnia out of Adriatic coastline, Bosnia only has like a km or so of coastline as the Croatian border stretches down the Adriatic coast as far as Montenegro. Cyprus is a weird country just by looking at its borders. Any country with border "strips" are kinda weird, Namibia and its Caprivi Strip and Afghanistan where its strip causes a 3½ hour time zone change at its border with China.

The Vatican isn't even the smallest country within the city limits of Rome. That would go to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which has only a single building. Technically, this would make it a "nation" (i.e., people) but not a "country" (territory). However, it is recognized by dozens of other nations. As for that other country, the most legitimate leader of Burma is on record as saying they were fine with the use of either name. "Burma" is more euphonious in English and has a long tradition.
