Thio missed one thing about Dual-link HDMI. It wasn't just about dual layer transmission off of DVI, but a planned power over HDMI (POHDMI) setup for specific industries, most notably wired security cameras. At the time it was designed wireless security cameras weren't a big thing, and POE cameras had very limited bandwidth capabilities (we're talking pre-standard 10/100/1000 networking for POE, which at the time sacrificed bandwidth for power transmission over Cat-6 cabling). Dual-link HDMI was meant to be the answer, it could transmit 720 and 1080 resolutions while also having the ability to transmit power. Run one long HDMI cable and bam, you're done. There were even planned powered HDMI hubs using this format. Of course before it could roll out or even be broached as a manufacturing standard, POE caught up with Cat-7 and Cat-8. Cat-8 could be run to a single POE hub or switch, and Cat-7 could be run to the individual cameras.

For the HDMI Type B, as ThioJoe mentioned, not actually any monitor reached these kinds of resolution then, and I also guess its kinds of capable resolution are later capable by the 1.4 version of Type A; C; D so the needs of Type B are no longer necessary.

For the record, I've got a Nissan X-Trail (T32) which sells in the USA as the Nissan Rogue and if you look for a second-hand stereo for it you can see the HDMI type-E connector on the back. Most likely, it's driving the display in the dashboard (it's got a smartphone sized screen between the rev and speed dials that shows nav, music and other car settings).

9:09 - to be fair, 1920x1200 would be an 8:5 (or 16:10) aspect ratio. While I'm sure such monitors exist (Final Fantasy XI has a 16:10 setting for the rendering aspect ratio), they must be fairly uncommon.
@Nabeelco3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, DVI signaling was based on analogue TV signals. So even though it's digital, It's not packetized data like you would have in other digital connections like Ethernet, USB, etc. It's literally a digital representation of an analogue TV signal, so poor connections can cause the same sort of artifacts you would get with a traditional TV signal, like static, snow, a rolling picture, or a picture that isn't lined up with the display properly.

I'd be curious to see if the dual-link HDMI cable will eventually return for 32:9 displays. DVI-D SL to DVI-D DL was an increase of bandwidth of 1.7777x, though this was mostly for a larger display of the same aspect ratio. An apples to apples comparison of displays, the only change being the horizontal resolution, vertical resolutions and Hz matching, HDMI-SL on a 16:9 display would allow HDMI-DL to have the same performance on a 21:9, a 1.3125x increase, similarly an 18:9 display would be covered under the same performance with increased bandwidth idea. Assuming a modern HDMI-DL could bump the number up to 2x, we could see equivalent performance for dual-width 32:9 monitors, assuming a manufacturer ever produces a panel with equivalent performance to their 16:9 panels. This would be important if such a panel was pushing the boundary of the HDMI spec at 16:9, thus requiring two discrete cables to achieve the same performance on a 32:9 panel of the same specs. Though I wouldn't be surprised if this would be a niche implementation where every product that uses a newer HDMI-DL spec would have an adapter for a dual cable setup; but at the same time, HDMI-DL would have the benefit of devices recognizing each other as a single display, but this would also require the video-out device to be using the same connector for this QOL/EOU implementation. But, with everything going the way of piggybacking USB Type C, I doubt we'll see much changes in port design. Though a dual link Type C port would be pretty cool, especially for external PCIe uses, expand the x4 limitation to x8, which would make eGPUs more viable, rather than seeing proprietary ePCIe x8 links, like what Dell uses.

The aftermarket head unit in my Mazda has 2 HDMI type E ports. One is input so you could in theory connect a Nintendo switch dock or something like it and display it on the screen, and an output, so you could output whatever is on the screen to a different display; at least that's what I can assume as I haven't tried the output. However, the input does work when I used a Nintendo Switch dock and powered it from the 5v USB port from the back of the head unit and with a HDMI type E cable and selecting HDMI as the input, so that's cool! I'm sure with a cool custom 3D printed dock and more importantly a need to do so you could add a really nice Switch dock to your car if you have a head unit that supports it

Actually most 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 screens from the DVI era required dual-link cabling, and even some 1680x1050 ones wouldn't work on a single link. This is because DVI only required support for 165MHz TMDS links, with 330MHz being optional (HDMI requires both to be supported).
