hella good transitions with the error beeping and keyboard smashing. subbed on that alone.

That Olivetti PC1 with a single 3.5 floppy was the first computer I had in the mid 80s. It sparked my passion for computers and programming and is the reason I am a software engineer today

Nice! Yeah I picked it up from Italy only recently, and I'm a big Olivetti fan. It fascinates me that it is very close to the form factor of some of their typewriters.

I'm running Win10 on my Thinkpad T61p, no problems. Of course some modding and upgrading so: SATA2 SSD, 4GB RAM, T9300 Core2Duo. You are so right about the OLPC...

More context, in Uruguay the government implemented a high-impact state program, and buyed hundreds of exactly this model of OLPC,and distributed them free of charge to all primary school students. By doing so, it improved accessibility to both technology and the Internet. The concept of OLPC is a computer to be used by children, and to withstand the abuse that a child might have with it.
@RDKLInc19 күн бұрын
@@SantiagoPeraza well, for the same price they could have handed out 4x as many used windows laptops that provided a better experience for the students. Children are not dumb - they do not need a computer made “for children”. Children have the capacity to figure out a modern computer far beyond what adults can

First, the goal of the plan was to standardize access to hardware and the Internet. Second, dozens of repair centers were developed that allowed for standardization and lower repair costs. This plan began in 2007, with the OLPC model, but has been adapted to new models. Were there better used equipment? Yes. But the goal was to provide and guarantee access to technology. @ I am very aware of the project but I fundamentally disagree with it because there are far better and cheaper ways to get the job done that don’t involve the production of brand new junk computers
@SantiagoPeraza19 күн бұрын
@@RDKLInc Of course, but the context is important. In Uruguay, access to low-cost repairs is not so easy. I am Uruguayan, and repairing any PC involves getting parts abroad (Ebay, Amazon, Aliexpress) or trying your luck in the second-hand market to get a model identical to the one you want to repair. Ensuring that 450,000 computers are repairable is a big challenge to leave in the hands of second-hand PCs, in different conditions and surely different models.

@@SantiagoPeraza One thing I will concede is that they were very good at marketing, and it was basically all a marketing scheme. By selling something new and interesting they were able to raise a lot of money, whereas paying recyclers to refurbish old stuff can't hope to get people nearly as excited, even though it's the better option in so many ways.

It’s when vintage items are valued and expensive that they are preserved. When they are not worth money they are destroyed by our system. If you actually care about the preservation of retro, you should want it to be as expensive as possible.
