I love this niche and the “Cave of bad ideas” concept you are working on here. I don’t even care about building a mullet bike, but I’ve been watching just because you have found a style that works for you

I've been racking my brain for months on a fairly cost effective way to expand the range on my Gorilla Monsoon, and no combination of solutions I was coming up with seemed like the right option. This seems like it might be the way to go! Digging the new content with these parts experiments. Awesome series!

Cool! Checked the specifications, and apparently the pull ratio for shimano 11 speed road derailleurs is 1.10 mm of derailleur movement for every mm of cable movement. For SRAM 12 speed MTB it is 1.12 mm so apparently close enough to work together 😊

Hi Russ, Thanks for the "Cave of bad ideas" - all good fun. For me standard Shimano 2x converted to 1x using stock 11 speed STI brifter, with GRX 812 rear derailleur, 10-46 rear cassette (XD freehub), with wolf tooth 1x chain ring on front shimano crank - plenty of range, no need for road links etc B screw not screwed in and shifts flawessly. I suspect could extend to a 10-50, but no real need. Choose a front chain ring to suit whatever cliff you plan to go up

Yo! Y'know microshift and gevenalle sell Eagle 12sp shifters too? The GX eagle 11-50 cassette works on regular Shimano hub bodies too so no need to change there. I still appreciate the experimentation with mismatched components, it's always helpful to know what you can get away with.

I know it is probably a little low tech but i'm running a setup with 2x10 Gevenalle CX shifters, 50/34 double road crankset (Russ' favorite), stock Tiagra front derailleur/10 speed road derailleur and a cheapo 11-36 10 speed cassette I snagged on Ebay for the price of a 12 pack of beer. Somehow the 11-36 works with no b screw mods or hacks in both index and friction. Does it always shift perfectly or gracefully? No, but it seems to work. I guess this might qualify as a mini mullet setup.

You are doing a great job with this series, I’m sure you’d know already but the red thing that came with the sram derailleur was a b gap tool. On another not I was listening the Just Riding Along (jra) podcast and they were interviewing a SRAM employee and managed to get a solid indication that they are working on a drop bar GX shifter/groupset! So hopefully they will Finnish it and release it. Thanks for the good content, please ignore the haters.

Any good, inexpensive options if you are ok with 10 or 11 speed and don't need a monster gear? I'm considering a 1X midnight special build with a bar end of DT shifter. Would prefer having indexed gears as an option and a clutch derailleur would be a plus. Thanks for the great video series!

Microshift makes bar-end shifters for Shimano road or mountain drivetrains. (I'm using their bar-end shifters on a Fargo with a 2x11 SLX drivetrain - works great.) Some of their bar-end shifters can also be used on the downtube.

Brad Thomas depending on what you mean by monster gear? You could just do a road link and the Shimano cross derailleur(i can’t remember the name) w/clutch 42 and below. I’m using a xt sgs derailleur w/ a tanpan up to a 46t and reg brifter so far so great.

Do you find that the lever interferes with getting good leverage on the brakes when you are on the hoods? It looks like it is a tight fit to get a finger under the lever. Riding drops on trails you pretty much always have a finger on.

Hi, I have a question. I'm currently having a Shimano Saint M820 derailleur which is 10 speed and in the thought of buying that Gevenalle shifter, my question is if I buy those shifter even though the current stock have only 12 speed shifter GX, will it be a problem? Thanks in advance 😄

I have the e*thirteen 9-46 on my MTB with a standard Shimano SLX 11-speed drivetrain (i.e. what it's designed for) and I'm not happy with the way it shifts. Tuning is really fussy and even when dialed in, from time to time the chain will catch a tooth on the adjacent cog causing an annoying stutter.

I’m hopeful about using Gevenalle’s shifter! But, I’m concerned I wouldn’t like how the cable blocks access to a Rando-style handlebar bag while riding. Do you think the cabling could be routed to allow access to open a bag?

I've seen examples online of people using 90-degree turn V-brake cable noodles to redirect the "straight out the side" shifter cables of older-style brifters (here is one example: thecrazyrandonneur.wordpress.com/2012/05/08/how-to-have-a-large-handlebar-bag-with-sti-shifters/). I can't remember now if I'd seen the same approach used with Genevalle shifters, or if I just dreamed it up as something I'd try if I ever had a pair.

@@chrislukes9037 I've seen the v-brake noodles used in that manner as well. I'm still trying to procure a set of Gevenalles for my 1976 mixte... I'm still in the process of setting it up as my errand bike. I don't ever want to use a backpack of any kind while riding it... lol

I'm running one of their chainrings on my bike. It retains the chain waaaaay better than the wolftooth I had (which in fairness, was being used in a kludged 1x11 setup, so not their fault really), but it doesn't shed mud quite as well.

Hey russ I was told by gevenalle that the microshift bar end shifters wont work on their levers. I was asking them about the gx levers in combination with the "newish" sram 11 spd mtb microshift shifter. Maybe it's just the bolt as you mentioned here. Yhey say they are not compatible but I'm in wonder if its just them saying it's not suggested. Also we are bombora brothers.
@PathLessPedaledTV

It’s not compatible as a straight swap. Had to fiddle with bolts.
@MenioR
@MenioR 3 жыл бұрын
@@PathLessPedaledTV Russ, I noticed you were able to use the bolt that came with the Gevenalle shifters to make the stock Microshift lever fit. If I don't have one of those Gevenalle bolts to use would it be possible to modify the bolt in the stock Microshift lever by simply cutting it shorter, or is the threading different as well?

I'm curious what's driving you to stay with 11-speed? Once you go barend/Gevenalle, you can go 1x12 for effectively the same cost. Microshift has pods for both Shimano and SRAM 12-speed. Pair that with the Shimano M7100 SLX RD or SRAM NX respectively and use the Sunrace 12-speed 11-50t cassette. You go from a 15-18-21 cog sequence on the 11-speed to a 15-17-19-21 which eliminates the big 17% and 20% jumps right in the 15-20 MPH range.
