Some species of tropical sponges can live for 200 years while deep ocean ones can live for a few thousand. Stephen Hillenburg was a marine biologist at first, I'm sure SpongeBob still being a kid despite being in his 30s or 40s is 100% intentional.

Plankton is very different in this movie. Like in the show, he’s not truly pure evil he’s more of a complex character and a sympathetic villain, but in this movie he is pure evil and he actually tries to murder SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs with glee.

This is a very important story to me. When you grow up, you kind of stop believing in all the things you believed in as a kid. You accept what other people tell you about "the way things are," this is why all of Bikini Bottom is so easily mind controlled. I love that its a retold Wizard of Oz story where the heroes realize they already have everything they need but only see it for themselves after their journey.

He did apparently direct or was at least more hands on with some episodes of the later seasons before his death in 2018, but overall this movie was, for him, the end of his creation's story.
