I actually never forgot about the “Fry Kids” - but I never knew what they were officially called! I think their small stature and simpler design made them more “approachable” to me as a child, and familiar to The Muppets.

That Big Mac playland thing was terrifying for a lot of kids. The middle was a narrow tube that only one person was supposed to be in at a time (which almost never happened) and the "mouth" part was also cramped and the bars made it even worse. Since it was outside it was slippery after rain and was ridiculously hot on sunny days.

Sometimes we'd walk down to the local McDonald's, which had huge stained glass murals of various scenes in McDonaldland. I think but I might be mistaken that it had the older old man design for Hamburglar. I remember one of my Happy Meal activities was space themed, and talked about the upcoming passing of Halley's Comet, so that puts it around early 1986.

Suggestion: Jack, the Jack-In-The-Box clown mascot. As time went on, it was decided that Jack, as a mascot, presented a childish image of the restaurant chain. So it was decided to get rid of him, literally. Commercials showing Jack's box being blown up started appearing on TV. This decision led to vocal protests from professional clowns.

The restaurants had drive-through speakers that were shaped like clowns. They wanted to have a more grown-up image so they got rid of them and had a commercial where they blew up one of these speakers to demonstrate this. Years later, the current Jack (the human wearing a spherical white head) was introduced in a commercial where he got revenge on the executives that blew up the clown speakers, setting a bomb off in their office and taking over the company. This commercial wasn't on the air for long, as shortly afterward an actual (not Jack-in-the-Box related) bombing incident occurred and they pulled the ad.

I really miss when McDonald's was McDonald's. I remember the first time walking into a newly renovated McDonald's and if the food aroma wasn't there, I would not have guessed I was inside a McDonald's. McDonald's use to be really good with their toys too and as an adult now, it makes me happy I was a kid when McDonald's was this happy red and yellow fun house, and you could get some real good quality food and toys. Completely changing McDonald's identity like that feels so illegal honestly. I also miss the old Tim Hortons. It was so good. Coffee and donuts. Just your classic Canadian coffee shop. Now the US bought it, and it's trying too hard to compete with its competitors. It has too much on their menu and food quality not the greatest. It turned a great Canadian chain into a joke. McDonald's bought their coffee a while back so I always go to McDonald's now for their coffee. If Tim Hortons just made better quality food, didnt have a thousand items on their menu, it can still be successful. Some places dont need so much items on their menu. Tim Hortons can do limited time stuff, but trying to become a new Mcdonalds or whatnot doesn’t work. Or...If our neighbours didnt buy it, I might have been able to still get a decent coffee from them. Whatever it is, at the end it is to save time and make more money. Eveything is getting cheaper in quality. Cars, food, clothes, houses - its awful how greedy the world is getting. Sacrificing quality and happy customer's for money. **Edited spelling

The happy meals were actually fun and we would sit the whole time filling out the games and stuff from the box. Todays boxes are bags sometimes but regardless, they suck. The food sucks (they took msg out since that fat lady sued them because she couldnt control herself and her habits) and youre lucky if your fries are cooked correctly and are hot; theyre usually undercooked or overcooked and always nast warm or cold and taste like cardboard. As a child of the 70’s, I “knew” every one of these characters. Disney’s movie version of Peter Pan came out in the mid-70’s, when I was 5. My family explained that Captain Hook was named after a famous explorer named Captain Cook, so the Captain Crook creation made sense. But knowing about Captain Cook, I was really getting confused between the names “Hook” vs. “Crook.” Anyway, I had forgotten in more recent years where Captain Crook came from. Glad to get that put back together. Children’s commercials were so fun, I used to ask people which they liked better the “long” tv shows or the “short” ones. We also had Schoolhouse Rock, so it was easy to confuse advertising with pure entertainment/educational shows back then. 😊

They also used to have "The McDonald's Happy Meal Guys" "Hamburger, Soft Drink, and Fries. All regular size". They were puppets of those food items with faces. I heard that these characters were the inspiration for the characters in Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Later on (I think sometime in the 90s) they introduced an alien named CosMc (pronounced "cosmic"). I don't know if he was tied to a specific menu item.

After a while I just started tuning these commercials out on Saturday mornings and other cartoon times! Haha! I'm surprised nobody ever got upset about Grimace being an imitation of Barbapoppa with all of the similar characters!!

I grew up in the 70’s, I believe Hamburglar was always called that, the lone jogger was just for that commercial,I checked one of the first commercials for Mcdonaldland and he was called Hamburglar, but still good video and the magical Burger King would be a good one to do on mascots.

I think you're right. I grew up in the 80s and I remember the friendlier-looking redesigned Hamburglar still stealing burgers and only saying "Robble Robble" and not speaking in full sentences like they say he does in this video. I don't remember that original Hamburglar design at all, so he was definitely still stealing burgers in the 80s. These changes were more gradual than this video makes them out to be.

That was great, but you forgot to explain about the Professor (who was in several of the commercials you played). Also, Mac Tonight and Cosmo, the weird alien guy.

Remember seeing McDonald's and other characters years ago. What happened to them now? Ronald McDonald is easily recognizable. Liking the content from the channel.

I used to have terrible nightmares about Ronald McDonald after seeing a very, very cheap impersonator at a fair. He'd chase me around, trying to kick me with those bigass boots... with the Fry Guys cheering him on all the while. To this day, if there's a giant Ronald sitting on the bench outside, I can't go in.

Ronald McDonald is also a character McDonald's doesn't use anymore he got replaced by those sentient Happy Meal characters. I know many people hate them I personally don't care I don't like McDonald's food and Ronald McDonald was a mascot I always found creepy.

And why did Mayor McCheese sound like Ed Wynn? Did the ad execs watch Mary Poppins and Babes in Toyland too many times? (And was that John Goodman in a McDonald’s breakfast ad??)
