Brian is an intellectual author who has the sensible head on his shoulders about everyday situations that a responsible sensible adult person has, and Stewie is a genius mastermind who's created the ability for and constructed devices for time travel and interdimensional travel, and also has known how to conduct diabolical plans for world domination and schemes to take down certain unwanted characters (Lois). But then, neither of them know how to use a toilet or even know what it is, Stewie's in diapers and Brian can only go on the lawn. Brian's also freaked out by vacuum cleaners (but that though can be more to do with a phobia of vacuums rather than not knowing what they are (even intelligent scholars can have phobias of odd things))
