My goodness the slow mo sound of Frieda putting Ginny in her place was like a fire breathing dragon she really let Ginny know how things are. It’s a bit sad to watch. Glad to know it’s normal behavior. Wonder how long it took for them to accept her again? Does every single horse have a place in the herd or just some are leaders and some are followers? Lol
@shannondominguez9725
@shannondominguez9725 3 жыл бұрын
@@liveandletlive8804 yes it can be sad at first but it is perfectly normal once you know what you’re seeing horses just like other species who live together regularly (such as wolves)do indeed have a hierarchy so there’s one leader then the other members have their place/rank in the herd alpha,beta etc in the main adult herd Uniek is 100% the leader and Matriarch.Out in the wild a stallion will win himself a band of mares and sometimes youngsters if 1 or more of the mares he grabs has a youngster with her already,however the stallion himself doesn’t make the major decisions like when to find water or where the best grazing spots are that is up to his trusted lead mare she is usually the oldest and most experienced mare in the band,something else is that a stallion can’t always make a particular mare stay with him if she wants to leave she’ll find a way it also depends on the stallion’s personality too. This behavior we saw here is happening in wild bands every day horses,especially the stallions,are constantly challenging each other for leadership and testing each other’s limits for weaknesses(occasionally in wild bands a stallion will allow another stallion of similar age in his herd if the 2 know each other they’re often referred to as a “lieutenant” this often provides extra protection especially if they have young vulnerable foals) so this is nothing to be worried about at all.Ginny had been gone for awhile and Frieda was letting her know what her position in the herd was and once Frieda was satisfied Ginny had received the message things will have calmed down;being the sweet go with the flow girl she is Ginny accepted what Frieda was telling her and they left it at that. Ginny has always struck me as one of the mares who is kind of in the middle as far as her position goes she’s not overly dominant or too interested in being lead mare nor is she one of the more nervous ladies who is further down the ladder she’s more of a peacekeeper/mediator if you will,that’s how it seems to me at least. I hope that answers your question somewhat I by no means consider myself a horse expert like Yvonne but that’s the best way I can explain this 😊🐎

Ginny almost seems like she’s slyly showing off her new high-stepping skills the way she was prancing with her flashy new shoes gleaming in the sun. I still remember how stunning her movement was during the inspection, and how much calmer she was than the other nervous, young mares. Ginny is back with her new training and she’s seen the “big time” at Stal Chardon-Freida and Geertje’s “mean girl” shenanigans must seem so incredibly *provincial* to our new ster mare!

It really looks like an elaborate dance. Two steps forward, three steps back. Nothing quite as beautiful as horses acting like horses in freedom. Most of the kicks never even connect. Frieda is trying to suss out the impostor in the herd, and Ginny has to prove she has the mettle to be one of them. Typical hazing behavior in the sorority :p Love to see Risy seems calmer with the other foals, even interacting a little. It's good for them to watch the kerkuffle, learn well little ones, tomorrow it'll be your turn ;)

Yet another reason why this stal is so fabulous; they let horses be horses. Witness Yvonne who stays well out of it. It is critical for horses to know their ranking in their herd. For survival, a horse needs to know whose lead to follow in times of danger. They need to know the answer to the all-important question, "Do I need to run away or not? Who should I follow?" Ginny comes back into the herd with a high level of confidence and Frieda says "No. I know more than you in this field, in this space, with this herd." Notice that their kicks never make actual contact. I think this establishing of rank is taking longer than it might because Ginny is familiar with the space, the other herd members and thinks she knows her way around. So interesting to watch because this breed is generally docile so you don't always get to see such a graphic display. Thanks Yvonne, for sharing this with us and guiding us through the process. You are so knowledgeable. ❤

Very interesting video about herd behaviour today. This was the chance for the other young horses to go higher in the herd ranking. The mares with foals are higher in the ranking anyway. So they haven't a real interest in the fight. And there were no danger from outside, so they let the younger ones do. It was clearly to see, that they kept an eye on their foals, but the foals were also outside the fights, so that they could keep calm.

I agree, it’s simply awful to watch this video 😢 I know it’s natural and thank goodness Yvonne is watching! I’m too afraid Ginny will get really hurt and she’s just given her best at show with her star rating. I’d have introduced her back more gently by putting her in an adjoining pasture or in the sandy place next door. But, I certainly trust that Yvonne knows tons more than I. 🙏😓

@@Schiffon I understand and agree that it is sometimes hard to watch even though this is natural behavior. Frieda is probably just trying to make sure Ginny remembers who's boss. Female dogs in a colony do the same thing, vying for dominance and reminding each other who's on top. It's usually friendly 'back standing,' but if one gets out of line, the leader is quick to keep them in line with a nip on the muzzle that can leave a mark. Nothing too serious, but enough to get the point across. When the top one dies, it's a constant frenzy of back-standing and competition until a new leader emerges. Since Ginny was gone for awhile, Frieda is probably just making sure she didn't forget her place within the herd.

I think Freida, Hester, and Geertje were being so intense because they are more insecure. They're also younger and have more energy and no foals, which is a big part. But I think they are probably at the bottom of the herd, and they don't want this newcomer to usurp them. They want to keep what dominance they have.
