That kind of thing happens all the time. Do you imagine that government employees feel obligated to be nice in the way that private sector service workers are? The disdain many feel for them is earned. Not all of them are bad but so many are that on the whole they suck.

Rich Asians and even those well to do middle class Asian parent’s prioritizes their children’s education and are willing to pay for their children’s college tuition. They are willing to shed even more money for those hard to pursue courses like law and medicine. It’s a normal thing in my country here in SE Asia that parents pay for their children’s education until college. For those who cant afford it, they apply for scholarships or be a working student.

Ironically, this is what many US citizens complain of regularly in dealings with the police...sometimes, people use their authority to belittle others just to make themselves feel better... This hit painfully close to home. My husband of over two years who lives in Egypt has recently been denied a visa to come to the United States. He already passed his I-130 (green card) and he had his interview at the American Embassy in Cairo a year ago. We just found out that they denied is visa because they said he married me for a green card. No proof, no asking for additional data, nothing. Just a bigoted case worker at the consular office at the American Embassy. And the case will take about two years to come back to the United States where I can appeal the decision. On the flip side, on our way back from China in 2013, my (then) wife wrote "...and things" on a customs declaration form. I told her that is a red flag to ANY customs agent and we will be detained; she scoffed, "Do you really think we're supposed to list every single item we're bringing back?" YES. Every international student can relate to this story. You never know what is going to happen when you cross through immigration. Even if your paperwork is in order, you will always encounter an officer who does not understand your visa and wants to accuse you of something being wrong. If you are lucky the officers at the secondary inspection are more knowledgeable and will let you pass after a very long wait. This story is so true, any small detail that goes wrong can ruin years of studying and hard work, and close the door to any future job opportunities. This is so sad, as her next step was to either hire an expensive immigration lawyer, or stay in her home country or work somewhere else. The boyfriend would have had to follow her or move on.

on the topic of border control I also found it very weird how they ask you so many personal questions. I'm an international student in UK and sometimes when I arrive to heathrow airport they ask more than usual. For instance I've been asked "do you love your parents?", "what grades did you get on your exam? was it stressful?", "do you like living in UK?", "does your family miss you?". I mean that happens when they turn into small talk mode, but gosh these are not appropriate questions for border control, especially when it's such a worrying situation for international student, on the contrary, when I'm passing the control with my european friend, they don't ask him anything.. feels weird

I was scared I would get separated from my group. Anyway, they asked me some questions and lightly rifled through my belongings, then let me go ahead. But next to me was a guy with brown skin and middle eastern features, but his accent, his smart clothes, his mannerisms and sense of humour were 100% American. They searched through his belongings zealously, even looking in every sock. And this was before 9/11! The lovebirds were crazy not to consult with immigration counsel to figure out the best way for the woman to immigrate to the USA legally. A little intelligent planning would have averted this ugly fact pattern from playing out as it did. Also, the U.S. boyfriend planning a proposal at the airport was madness. Yeah... because America is one country. The EU is a confederation of nations, so you're comparing apples and oranges. As noted above, everyone who is here *legally* is allowed to move around freely. And yes, we are allowed to do "whatever the hell we want" when it comes to OUR laws and OUR nation. I'll bet you get pretty salty if/when Americans try to tell you about how your country is a terrible place and what laws you should change. It works both ways, buddy.
