This place is HELL within HELL. I grew up there in the Van Dyke projects in the 1970s and 1980s. No food in the refrigerator. Giant cockaroaches. Mice. People getting thrown off of the roofs. Crack in the 1980s. The train station called Junius street was where people got robbed and killed. Women got raped all of the time. Had to fight at least three times a day. When I would buy shoes and coats and clothes on Pitkin and Belmont Avenue I would have to fight my way back to my apartment. Had fight to keep my bike and skateboard. Had to fight on my way to public school and on my way back. I watched this video and woke up throwing up. Before the internet in the 1970s you would have to fight just to walk on that block. I was a child not even a adult and it was beyond hell on earth in those projects. All the children were talking about Sparfford and Rikers Island like it was college. Maybe things have changed now but for many people it was pure HELL.

I’m native NYC (Jamaica, Queens) born and raised. Queens is called the “Worlds borough” because every nationality of the world is in Queens. As I look back you learn quick how to move so to speak amongst the people. Most people who think NYC, think of Manhattan (fake fantasy island, LES, Harlem, Wash Heights excluded), I do think being so close to Manhattan opened my eyes to there is BIG money in this world, only a train ride away. Some of us saw it, most didn’t.
