I love the abbey church, i live across the road on sopwell lane, everytime I walk around the inside and outside of the building i notice something different. As an archaeologist ive worked on the north east corner and the south east corner of the abbey, ive also worked ( excavated) part of the bishops residence across the road from the eastern side. But inside theres one ( well two) things i noticed a few years ago and still havn't discovered what era , who they represent. Standing with your back to albans shrine facing the lady chapel , either side of the iron gates attached to the stone pillars tucked away about a metre from the floor are two strange carved heads , painted and facing down towards the floor . Ive asked a couple of different tour guides and a few priests, vicars and others who work for the church, for information about them , none have ever noticed them before i pointed them out let alone have any knowledge about them . Hopefully someone from the ( locals refer to it as the abbey) cathedral will read this and tell me about them . Its not exactly the most gracious of places / positions to be set . I've tried guessing, are they survivors of the destruction of the reformation? Could they even be from the old Roman city across the river, possibly early Romano/ Christian, we know of mosaics that have religious symbols and possibly images of christ. But why not keep them locked away in the vaults , rather than fix them opposite the shrine facing the floor , as if in shame ... I have some photos but no video footage, i should pop across the road and video them . I love winter when leaves fall off trees i can see the tower perfectly clear . Not many people realise the central tower is made from Roman tile , recycled from the old Roman city verulamium.
