I am a teacher and just stumbled upon this fabulous channel. I have a specific question. I have a colleague who is primarily a cellist but also plays violin and viola, quite well. However, I'm finding real bow hold issues with her advancing students that she's taught from early days, where they all seem to end up with the bow deep in the front of the hand nearest the palm, and with locked straight pinkies in response. She does teach them to curve the pinkie on top but directly on the top, which seems to cause them to lock up so as not to have the pinkie slide over into a cello-style hold. I was taught to put my pinkie just behind the top of the bow, though of course as I play, it moves around a lot, but my 'home base' is the angle of hexagon just below the flat top, nearer me, where it sits without tension. Am I mistaken that this could be the source of the problem? These students are all in my youth orchestra and when I have them try moving the pinkie it does serve to pivot the bow back towards the first joint of first finger. I have searched your bow videos to see if this has been addresses but have not discovered anything yet. Thank you for your amazing clear instruction.

Thank you for your comment. You are absolutely correct - the pinkie should be placed slightly behind the top of the bow. In order to respond to your question (i.e. finding the source of a problematic bow-hold problem of some students), I would like to make sure I have a complete picture. When you describe their bow-hold as "they all seem to end up with the bow deep in the front of the hand nearest the palm" , do you also observe that not only their pinkies are straight but also the neighboring ring fingers? In other words, their bow hold is roughly closer to the so-called old Russian (Heifetz-style) bow hold? Do I have the correct picture or not quite?

@@ViolinClassUSA Thank you so much for the reply. Yes, similar to a sloppy "Heifetz" style, but you can tell they do not have a comfortable 'cradle' in the hand for the bow to rest. The middle two fingers slide high so that the bow seems to be hanging from the hand rather than cradled in it. The ring finger is not necessarily straight, but is sometimes bent almost on the top of the stick.The bow seems to be resting between the middle knuckle of the first finger and the palm of the hand, with straight pinkies. In this position, they have very little function at the frog of the bow, nor can they do off the string strokes. When I tried to adjust their hands, it was a matter of both rotating the bow hand down so the bow was cradled rather than hanging and also pivoting the bow towards the first knuckles of the hand. The teacher who set my bow hand was a student of Galamian's so my bow hand looks like yours. My colleague seemed shocked when I suggested that the pinkie should be just behind the top angle, as she was taught that it goes directly on top, so I wanted to be sure I was accurately describing this. But for these students, that seemed to be a key correction that ensured that they weren't in danger of having the pinkie slide over. Thank you so much again for your consideration.
