As hack hobbyist I have been watching this channel to learn some basics and for its entertainment value (almost every video is good for a laugh or two). But have to say, you guys have also given me a new found respect for the profession of welding, a combination of technical expertise and craftsmanship. Well done and kudos to all the true welding professionals out there!

Yeah, don’t quench! 😂 I made that mistake once. I picked up my strip after leaving it to cool but it was still super hot. Out of reaction I chucked it in the nearest tub of water. I went to bend my two pieces, neither of which had visible porosity, but the one that was accidentally quenched split right in half! Good thing it was just for practice. 🤦🏻♂️
@desyquintero84513 жыл бұрын
So interesting how every metal needs its own procedures. I'm a jeweler and we often get fits with white gold cracking so while visiting a metallurgist friend that does high production castings he told me, "quench white gold right away and it won't crack" Guess what he was right !
@xXxXcrosbykidXxXx2 жыл бұрын
Little late but maybe it'll help somebody.. if you happen to accidentally or mistakenly quench your plate or coupons, you can reheat them with a torch then allow them to cool naturally and they will be good to go again! I've dropped a plate in a tank by accident while setting up to cut it with a torch, just get the weld zone cherried again and it will be fine.

I always find myself watching these and thinking "That's honestly no more difficult than welds I've done out in the field." Yet I still get over the "test jitters" that come before a test. I've been welding for 4 years and still can't seem to walk my happy butt into the test.

As a welded structures design engineer who defines the usage of AWS D14.4 and D1.1 on the drawings, these types of videos give me a massive appreciation for the guys actually putting the structures together. The skill/workmanship that is required and verified with tests like this excite me to want to define welds that will result in high quality welds leading to long lasting structures. Kind of makes me want to try the qualification test myself as a non-welder and see how bad thing turn out. haha🤣

A great way to remove a backer is this, Cut your strips, Use a zip disk to notch into the MIDDLE of the backer and go down 3/4 of the backer. you now have a line scored in the backer but not into the test piece. Then put your backer in a Vise and twist. the backer will split and be easily removed by hand. then minimal grinding is needed,

I never used backing strips on my bend tests back in vocational school passed on my second test. Root passed both times face on the first was bad. Used a track torch to cut the bevel on my test metal. Cut the test pieces on the band-saw
@grigoriyefimovichrasputin78972 жыл бұрын
I didn't use a strip either Id tack it at the ends so i can then tack it standing on another plate to my table then fill the root letting the arc fill in before i push it through then made the face with stringers 2 on the root pass then 3 over the last two stringers bottom to top with all 5 passes then grinded.

Would you ever do a CWB F class ticket video? Different than the S class quite a bit, The test consists of a 6010 open root with 7018 hot pass, fill and cap also with 7018. Then you also complete a fillet weld break test. Certifies you for open root and fillet welds. It is a common procedure you need in pile driving, as sometimes you will have to splice piles with a 6010 open root.

Grinding the material induces a strain hardening at that location . This rises the shear stress required to rapture the material and consequently draw sort of unreliability in final results.

So much for the “common knowledge” that a weld joint is brittle! Are there welder certification requirements for tensile testing? I’d like to see if the tensile failure point is in the parent metal, or at the fusion point of weld material to parent metal.

@Weld.com I have put a slight reverse bend in my plates after doing the tack weld(mostly on open root) so that when the heat of the welds start to pull the pieces inward to the center, it actually pulls them flat. Does that eliminate those coupons from a test parameter? I have other issues with welding to pass bend tests that would not be associated with the previous question. I’m trying to figure out what I need to do to get to the point of actually being able to pass bend tests.
