Did this weld right the first time? How did you know to turn down the inductance? I would love to see some of your trial and error videos.

Jeff Kreska As I explained at the first of the video, helium causes a hotter arc. Needed to counter that to have the weld freeze fast enough.

Ask ESAB about their metal core stainless wire that you can run with straight argon. That's what I use at work.

Hey Bob, love the calmness you do your very great and helpful videos. I do need some guidance, I am currently welding 316 to 316 and am using .035 316, would that be the right wire for the base metals?

Could you do pipe welding with only a MIG machine? What wire and settings would be appropriate? root, hot pass and cap?

We use to use that tri blend mix at the company i work for, it was the best gas to run with stainless steel. Our material thickness were a lot less though, 14 and 12ga . We're currently using Stain Lite as our shielding gas when mig welding, I'm told its a tri mix as well but it doesnt have the percentages written on on the cylinders and i am almost certain it doesn't have helium. Helium was the reason they switched saying it was to expensive and a shortage of the gas blah blah blah, The Stainlite is good but i still think that Tri Mix was better, it gave a better color to the weld and the weld puddle , puddled better

I'd like to see a cut and etch on that part. What can be done to get rid of the peak in the horizontal fillet with this wire and gas running that hot?

It's better to use an Argon Helium O2 or Argon O2 mix on stainless as the carbon in CO2 causes staining and also can form Chromium carbides.

The weld itself fuses the metal only where the bead touches it? Where the two pieces of stainless touch each other (the narrow face/edge of the vertical sitting on the flat face of the horizontal) there is no fusion there, is it? Trying to understand better the welding process. If I were to grind that weld to 90 degree corners, the two pieces would come apart, right?

any chance you could give tips on thicker stainless? I have to weld an 8" OD 3/8" wall pipe to a 5/8" flange (a pole mounted to ground essentially, with gusseting to edge of flange) . All stainless. I do a lot of art (large scale sculpture) welding from stainless using .035 wire and 98%arg/2%c02 with great results, but this would be a multi pass. I have machines capable of spray and have bottles of tri mix, but was looking for some techniques for doing multi pass or spray on thicker stainless. I just worry about how to handle the heat since it gets so concentrated. really appreciate your channel. its been a great resource and has definitely helped me improve my mig techniques and my understanding of what is going on.

What does the inductance setting do?
@planeswalking
@planeswalking 7 жыл бұрын
"The inductance setting on a mig welder controls the rate of current rise following the short-circuit state. That is during the time when the wire is short circuiting into the weld puddle. This setting affects the arc time too. That is the amount of time the short circuit cycle spends arcing and providing heat to the puddle." --weldingtipsandtricks basically, you increase inductance if your puddle needs to be wetter, and you put it down if you think it will get too wet. in this case the helium will make the arc run hotter with deeper pen, so the puddle is more likely to flow off on you, so he dialed it down a bit to compensate. not a mig welder per se, but it's similar to how i set my pulses on tig. inductance is like a fine tune after you found your wire speed and voltage setting.

More inductance = "wetter", more fluid puddle.

I've done some repairs on exhaust pipes using my mig welder. One thing I've consistently noticed is that rust occurs mainly on the weld joints, and not so much on the aluminized steel pipes themselves. Is it possible to use stainless steel mig wires with tri-mixed gas to weld these pipes and create weld joints that don't rust?
@blw5005
@blw5005 4 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what you have to do. Using 75/25 gas introduces carbon into the weld and allows it to rust. You could also use flux core wire and not run gas but the welds aren't are pretty.

Anything involving co2 or o2 in argon is considered MAG welding,as these 2 gases play a key role in the profile,penetration,aspect,mechanical proprieties.MIG=metal inert gas, MAG = metal active gas
