hi how reliable is a welded gearbox? i have a hyundai veloster 2013 1.6L. and how much should i be charged for it? overall they've replaced the flywheel, clutch and welding the gearbox, which they're charging £800, is that a good price?

@machineman8388

@@stacygoff8930 because it depends on the quality of the casting, most cast aluminum is junk thats filled with impurities and sand from the casting process and as soon as you really open it up these huge pores start showing up. I dont have that much experience welding aluminum but im assuming if you get some plate and try that, you won't have nearly as much junk in it

tell the guy the next time you pull the transmission off, make sure you take all the bolts out, so that way your mechanic doesn't have to weld anymore ears on your transmission. this happened to my friend, back when I was a kid in high school. he was taking the transmission out of a 72 Camaro, and he left one bolt still in, and literally broke the thing off, while prying it apart. that's how you break one ear off. 😁👍🏻

Or be sure you tighten all of the bell housing bolts to spec before going off-road in your 4x4. All but one loose caused not only a broken ear but cracked flex plate too. It did sound cool for about a second. A V8 powered machine gun. I got lucky in that it made it the 45 miles back home. As a high school student and mechanic in training it was a painful lesson. As the saying goes, It's all in the details. I took the broken off ear and glued it to the dash (beater truck lol) and when a girlfriend asked what the hell it was I told her it was a reminder. I did tell my instructor about my screw up and he said that it was a good teaching moment. we wound up swapping all of the broken parts at the school with wrecking yard replacements and it was good. the transmission input shaft was luckily fine. I got lucky in that there was no other damage and we put the cracked flex plate up on the bay wall with a sign saying FIX IT ONCE!! I drove it for another 160,000 plus miles before selling it. 1977 K10 series Scottsdale step side.

Yeah, why gm made so many th200, th350,th400, 700r4 without a removable bell housing don't make sense, especially when you realize they made them in buick-olds-pontiac bolt pattern, a common trans with removable bell would've made more sense

I have had to weld the whole bellhousing back on that broke from the left side to right side. It's not that hard just takes a lot of heat I used the cutting torch becauise that's what I had. As you see it soften to the point it's going to drop off take the heat off apply the aluminum welding rod as one reheats it. Later that year guy totaled the truck jumping a ditch bent the frame like a U front to back. I was sure the weld must of broke in the accident I looked under the truck & weld was fine. Best way to fix that trans is cut a junk trans ear fit & weld.

I have seen things like this thrown away because people think you can't possibly fix something like that. It was not unheard of in WW2 for planes to be flying with bullet holes patched on the engine blocks, and if the engine was bad enough, it was still repaired and then put into a tank.

That actually looks like a GOOD weld on an aluminum bellhousing. I have used a pulsed MIG in the past - I think I just covered the dirt.... I had all the pieces from the crack (someone tightened down when the torque converter wasn't fully seated) I would say, there are some racing bellhousing that could have been fitted to the trans. Not sure on the cost difference.

Nice work, Have repaired a few usually we were lucky enough to have the broken piece. I saw a few comments saying to take all the bolts out that may have been what happened but most of the time it's someone trying to pull it up with the bolts. What's really fun is welding up a broken hydraulic passage porous cast aluminum that's been in hot high-pressure oil its whole life.

Check the dowel holes in the bel housing .. loose transmission will wear them and the alignment issues. Solution is longer dowels or sleeve the dowel holes in the trans case.

I wish I had a picture of my buddy's 6.4l ZF transmission bellhousing out of his F-450 Super Duty. he couldn't get something bolted in, so he called me up, I went over there, and I was dumbfounded at what I saw. his transmission bellhousing literally exploded in about seven or eight pieces, and he had everything welded back together and put back in the truck! I was there to do some shit in the front of the motor, and he just got done putting that mess of a transmission back in. would you believe you drove the wheels off that truck after that? probably was stronger than that Chinese shit was to begin with.. 🤪

One thing worth trying next time that I've had good luck with - weld some beads on that break BEFORE cutting and fitting the filler pieces. You can get all the smut burnt out and ground back and you'll get a lot less porosity deep in that joint.
