Today is my first day welding. I was wearing a shade 5 provided with the welder. I probably did like 10-20 test welds today.. I could feel my eyes were getting tired from the flashes. Definitely getting an 8+ now. Thanks for the video.

As a welder i was looking into this for a friend thats doing permanent jewelry and to safely micro tig or even plasma cut we had to use shade 8. And above so ya save your eye sight get some goggles and put an adjustable 2x4 auto darkening lens in it

Hey man, I’ve heard from the Orion micro tig manufacturer that those after market auto darkening lenses do not darken quickly enough for this application. There are people using them tho .. I now only work through Orion’s scope which has auto darkening but triggered electronically via the welder. Not optically. My eyes feel 100% now, I seriously was feeling weird and sketched out by shade 5 after 1000 or so welds .. never again.

I wish I found out about this video sooner. I went through the same exact conclusion that shade 5 wasn't enough. I weld with much higher settings than you so I went with 2x4.25 lenses in shade 9 and super magenta. The super magenta really tones down the spark. Again, my work area needs a ton of light just to see so this has been a challenge. I'm contemplating working under a digital microscope with a digital screen.

Yes I’ve since switched to the Orion microscope attachment for mpulse and PJ and never looked back. The strain from trying to see was giving me headaches, and slowing me down. It worked in my studio but not in the field, I couldn’t get the task light high enough. I haven’t tried the digi-microscope lmk if you go that route.

@@Friction-Jewelry just bought a digital scope for this and didnt get on with it. Im in dental but similar work really, When your trying to work on small stuff that needs dexterity the lag on the digital scopes (even at 120hz) is really annoying. I have optical scopes for non welding and digital dosent come close. Not been able to find an auto blanking scope attachment to buy separately but will keep looking or if i end up doing enough welding will just buy the orion one.

So helpful... What lamp do you have?
@Friction-Jewelry Жыл бұрын
I have a few, I wouldn’t recommend any of them. I think for PJ you need a 10x with a good articulating arm. I don’t use the lamps anymore since I only use the microscope now. No more welding glasses good riddance I hated them

Hi, do you have any advice for people who already wear glasses. I'm only just starting to look into getting a welder and when I used a friends to try it out I ended up balancing the welding glasses over my prescription glasses! Thanks

Hi, I think this is a good option for you: Lightweight Plastic Clip-On Flip-Up Spectacles - Shade #6 Green Welders Lens. a.co/d/a8VxNhm Shade 6 gives you more protection vs 5 but keep in mind currently the AWS recommends no less than shade 8 for any welding under 50 amps. After making this video and trying shade 8 in the field I found i couldn’t get enough task light on the weld area, so I searched for another option and… I’m going to make a video soon going over using the upgraded Orion ADL, which I believe would be your best bet (and mine too).

@@Friction-Jewelry Thanks for you reply. I agree the 6 won't be enough and I think a free standing screen would work better. I just want something cheap than the Orion. Was wondering if I could rig up a welding helmet lens on it's own stand....

Well,, like, yeah!!! :P Was interested in your vids as am keen to ge the small spot welder then, also watched this 1 as [your right], not much info r.e. the OH&S affects of this [repeated] micro UV flashes any where on the "wide wide world of web". Twas intrigued as, it seemeds logical that, even though is 'micro' flashes, working up close to repeated bursts of hi level UV didn't seem very clever. 2 things about eye damage from weld flash. Repeated exposure is bad &, Side flashes into the eye(s) is(are) much much worstest. Taa (Oz lingo 4 thanks) 4 the info and this report on your [ self voulunteered lab rat ] experiment... & bad news is,, the damage is permenant. Sorry. Also mate, the UV flashes are carcinogenic(sp?) to the skin. Takes years of UV exposure to arc & MIG flashes but, ya up close n rite in it with your stuff so, face n fingers are steadility gettin bathed in UV a & b. Please consider - Dude. Maybe wear gloves & a 'KKK idiot' type hood or similar? LOL, that'd sure attract a crowd @ the weekend market! ;) [FYI, for the jocular retarded, that's a joke]. Hey, and really well presented/reported vids - Taa! :)

Def a great comment man. I don't even bother with the glasses anymore. Scope with auto darken all the way!
