Welding in patch panels on the AW11 Toyota MR2

In this episode of the Nugget Project we finally bite the bullet and weld in the stupidly expensive patch panels from Canada.

Awww thanks man, honestly I'm just bumbling through it and learning as I go but I've always been one of those people who can't learn in classrooms, I have to do it and have to want to do it to learn. Still a long way to go but I'm feeling I'm getting a little bit better with every repair :)

Cheers bro i appreciate it! honestly it's a huge task and it scares me too but i want to learn how to do this stuff and i guess the best way to do it is to just dive right in. I had to dig through the boxes of parts this morning to find something and that gave me the sweats, just about every component going back on this car will need at minimum a wire wheel and some paint or a sandblast, there is nothing that is good to go haha, but at least after this every single component and every nut and bolt will be perfect :)

With the door light switch area use the method of hammer forming, small block of wood, shape to fit that area, sit your flat panel on the wood and slowly start shaping it. hope that helps ya

insurance companies do not want to pay for things to be repaired properly so the filler sculptors just bog it up and create the right shape. I have seen cars with 50mm of bog in them

I've seen a lot of complaints about those patch panels on the aw11 Facebook group. I've seen some people weld in replacement mk1 gold/rabbit fender arches on the rear. Looks almost factory with a bit extra flare.

yeah i saw that, pretty interesting :) all the rest i should be able to fabricate pretty easily, these were the tricky parts :)

All filler no killer? 😂 Maaaan, those repro panels sucked. There's often a bit of fettling required with a (good) repro panel but that's ridonkulous! Nice work getting it to where you have 🤘

Yeah there were terrible haha, Ah well it's done now I'm just glad I didn't pay for the entire panel to be shipped over!

@@TheNuggetProject you know what I have tried to do several in the past and bodged them and not enjoyed it. Now I am older and have slowed down a bit I find it easier to enjoy the process. Btw I really appreciate you taking the time to upload these. Thank you!

Nice job! I think most people in mr2 community will have seen these panels for sale. I've just ordered the full skins for both sides myself so feeling a bit nervous having seen this. Did you relay your experience to the seller and was there any response?

Hopefully the complete panel is less of a pain, let me know how you go with it! also on these little panels it didn't have the tabs in the wheel arch to hold the side skirts on etc, so you'll probably have to weld some sheet on and shape and drill the holes so you've got something to mount to :)
