70 Chevelle. Very nice!! the only thing is my friend, take your time. don't lose your patience. If you're afraid of damaging panels remove little pieces at a time. Like grinding welds very slowly and peeling the metal back. I hope this helps

Do I just cut the center out of the quarter and work away the edges? What would you suggest? I'm very mechanically inclined and I would say I have a few skills I'm just worried being my worst critic that it wont be perfect
@classicrewind27155 жыл бұрын
You'll do fine. just remember there's always metal behind the quarter panel. You have to be careful not to cut through it. you'll create more if you do. You could always cut metal out and replace it if you need to, you must remember aftermarket quarter panels and panels need some adjustment. You might have to add metal to make it work, or hammer and dolly to make it fit properly. it's just a little more work...In one of my videos, the outer wheelhouse did not match the quarter panel. I had to cut it to release the stress on the bend and bend it back. I hope this helps.. keep in touch, let me know if you need anything

Hi great videos! I’m doing something very similar with a ‘70 GTO and your videos have been a big help. Especially when I feel overwhelmed and disheartened. My question to you is - does the lip from the outer wheelhouse and the lip from the quarter panel where they sit together get plug welded all the way from one end to the other? And if so, how far apart are the welds supposed to be? I don’t have a good factory reference point as someone did some half ass work to my car before I got it. It looks like most of the factory spot welds I have drilled out elsewhere on the car have been about every 2 inches. Would this scenario be the same?
@classicrewind2715 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words . Yes. It should be the same about 2 to 3 inches apart they get spot welded. Just a little bit of info, when I did my inner fenders to the quarter panel. I actually rolled them with a hammer and Dolly. It came out really nice. I don't have to worry about the wide tires touching the fender. I did not make a video of that. All the best

Hello. What brand outer wheel wells did you use? I'm having a hard time finding any that fit decent.
@classicrewind2715 Жыл бұрын
All my parts I bought from OPG. I don't know if they Outsource them. My quarter panels where OPG as well and the Box came back labeled dynacorn. If you do your research, a lot of parts are made in two or three different manufacturers. It depends on where you buy it. You don't know what you're going to get because they're just labeled individually.

@classicrewind2715 Thank you for the reply! I'm very much an amateur at metal fab and auto restoration. I'm working on a 72 for my father. Your videos have been very helpful, as I am doing both quarters and outer wheel wells too. I have the same quarters as you, but bought outer wheel wells from npd as the opgi pieces were out of stock. They don't seem to fit the wheel opening on the quarter well at all, and I'm unsure how to proceed.
@classicrewind2715 Жыл бұрын
My passenger side outer wheel well did not fit my quarter panel that well. What I did was cut slits in the outer fender, I made it easier to bend and mate with the quarter panel. I cut half inch slits approximately 8" to 10"from the Rocker panel area up to the outer fender. I hope I'm explaining this well. I'm not sure if I mentioned it in my video. The driver side fit well. I hope this helps let me know if you need more information. All the best

I’m doing about the same thing with my 70 chevelle but I’m having problems with the outer wheel house because I weld it before I bought the quarter panel it won’t let me move the panel where it supposed to be any ideas?
@classicrewind27154 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I didn't get back to you earlier. How many spot welds did you put on the inner wheel wells.? Maybe you could cut the welds and then reweld. The other thing you can do is have someone help you put on the quarter and see where it hits. you might be able to adjust The Wheelhouse a little bit and get that quarter panel where you want it. I hope this helps. All the best

@classicrewind27153 жыл бұрын
Hi, There's a couple good welders out there. I learned with stick welding years ago . But I don't recommend doing body panels with stick weld anymore, Too much heat and warpage. I recommend you buy a machine that has a lot of Adjustment . I know Lincoln Welders you could fine-tune them To what you are comfortable with . But there is a learning curve much with anything in life . I hope this helps all the best

I have a 71 Chevelle SS350 and I have a bunch of work to do on it. So far from what you have provided it's hard to do but not impossible. I was wondering if I could do the work myself and i believe after watching your videos I can do it. I do have a question though my car is still on the frame and the rear axle is still on it as well. Can the rear quarters and wheel wells be replaced while still on the frame and axle?
@classicrewind27154 жыл бұрын
Hi upstateNY. I am glad that my videos help you in your build. You can do it, you just need to take your time. You can leave your axle in place. The only thing it would make it much difficult to weld when you're replacing your inner wheel wells. Your Axel should not be in the way of your 1/4. I hope this helps. I recommend you try to drop your axle. If I'm not mistaken you have leaf springs. Most of the time the bolt snaps when removing your leaf springs to drop your axle..you could buy replacement bolts at your local parts store. All the best.. let me know your progress.

is the wheel house that touches the quarter panel the inner or outer kus im replacing my 72 chevelle and has minor rust issues in the wheel well and the lip of the quarter panel where the chrome molding goes but im stuck on replacing the quarter or not kus i know the wheel whells have to replaced but i would like to replace them any ways kus i want a daily driver let me know what u think redy to spend 2500 on parts but scared to cut and weld its very scary for me considering the chevelle i have is about 85 percent restored just needs paint i dont just want to bondo over the rust
@classicrewind27154 жыл бұрын
Hi. I have a suggestion for you. I don't know how bad the rust is. My suggestion is, if you could cut that area of the wheel well out and weld yourself a patch. Tack weld grind smooth and then you can put some sealer on there. they're not going to see anything from under the wheel well, if you clean it up properly. If you cut welds out you're probably going to damage the paint ,Along the outer quarter panel. If they're really bad then you might have to replace the wheel well, just a suggestion. All the best my friend I hope this helps.
@classicrewind27154 жыл бұрын
The wheel well that touches quarter panel is considered the outer wheel well

Hi Frank. I'm using a Lincoln welder 180 gas. If you haven't used one before it will take some time to get used to I would practice on scrap. The other thing they don't tell you is if you weld upside down it's a little different you might have to make your welder hoter . All the best my friend. I hope this information helps

way too much erratic welding. Too many screws to hold everything together. Too much welding blow through on the panels. Your gaps are workable and in the world of aftermarket, are ok to work with.
@classicrewind27154 жыл бұрын
Thanks PJL I wanted to make sure everything was held tight so when I did weld everything stayed in place. When I was welding you could actually hear the metal expanding and Contracting. Thanks for the advice, I was concerned about my gaps. I'm going to try to get the gap 1/4" before paint. All the best

Great videos. Your motivating doing all that by yourself. My question is I had a body shop replace my rear quarters. I later learned that they neglected to tell me my outer wheel housing is rotten where it meets the rear quarter. Can I trim out 4-5 inches of that wheel housing and weld it into place without removing rear quarter again?
@classicrewind27154 жыл бұрын
Hi Chad. That's a great question. yes, you can. The only thing is you need to take your time because it is welded along that lip of the quarter panel and outer wheel well. Also you need to take your time spot welding along that lip so you don't warp your quarter panel. All the best. let me know how it turns out.
