Welding on Shock Tubes... Will They EXPLODE?

Before we start, don't try this. It is probably a bad idea!
You guys asked for it. Today we weld the shock mounts back to the shock tubes. These are oil filled not gas filled so they shouldn't cause us any issues.

Buck Graham Ye I Great too. I don’t mean this in a funny way but “your” is like saying your car your hand, but you would say “the materials you’re using” and “what you’re doing”, instead of your. “You’re” is sort for “you are”.

I do that for a living. Re-adjusting shock mounts and re-welding. I use arc welding. Holds up pretty good even when driving spiritedly.

If they are just oil filled you could drill a hole, drain the oil, weld the mounts on, fill it with oil and weld up the hole. Or you could also weld in a bung with a plug so you can put thicker or thinner oil in them to set them up.

Good vid mate. A good idea if you HAVE TO do this is to have a buddy next to you with an air gun and a compressor pumping cold air on the weld as you go.

Thanks for this. I've a similar project, i'm going to try to mig them, it's for front shocks to fit longer springs to lift a small 4x4 car. Great work.

@izzzzzz6
@izzzzzz6 3 жыл бұрын
@@Joel-zr6ir It's to lift an old school 4x4 fiat panda. Turns out the donor car is a bit rusty so i got a cheap 2wd model, however when i get time i hope to strip the 4x4 and build it into a buggy frame, so i might give it a go then if i don't find a longer set. But i have the springs already. I found a video about changing shock oil at home, the guy just drills into the shock, squeezes the old stuff out then replaces it and welds back over the hole. Might not be perfect but could be a good option after welding the collar. I don;t think they would explode as the oil cools so well but it might transform some of the oil. Probably still good enough for what i need without changing the oil.

I've seen someone put a constant flame to a gas filled strut to remove a fastener. All that happend was that it spit hot oil past the seal for the shaft.
@802Garage
@802Garage 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If you do manage to create enough pressure, the fluid or gas is just going to try to escape past the point of least resistance. That is always going to be the seal. Or a fill port if there is one. These things will hold a ton of pressure before they blow.

Air lift makes a "welders kit" for custom air struts. They suggest a small weld followed by a dunk in water, then repeat.

Cut a shock open sometime. They have an inner cartridge that sits off the wall of the outer tube. All that is against the outside is oil.
@booplesschpooples6027
@booplesschpooples6027 4 жыл бұрын
The oil inside the shock will act as a heat sink and cool the outside metal tube. Gas shock would not do such, don’t weld on either but if you do oil filled is the way to do!

I could be mistaken but I think those particular strange shocks are twin tube design no? Far worse of an idea to be welding onto a mono tube...as in you might easily blow your face or nuts off. lol "Not gas filled"... yeah but they would be "gas filled" real quick like if you heated up the oil welding on a mono tube. lol Also if warmed up without it flashing, you still run risk of cavitating the oil easily and rendering the shock to be garbage - a exponential loss in performance. But again with that being said i'm pretty sure these are twin tube design and you're more than likely fine in what you did there... you're basically "tacking" the bracket onto just a external shell in a twin tube design.... mono far different of a critter when the oil is filled in the tube your actually welding onto (deff not advisable).
@CraftsmanQuad19
@CraftsmanQuad19 4 жыл бұрын
So why not weld above the bracket too? That would effectively jam the sleeve against the weld even if the weld cracked. With where they are now, if the weld cracks it’ll pull away from it right? Not discounting your welding, but the whole nose of the car is resting on those welds
