It's so cool that you are so passionate about these cars!, Back in the 70s we used to see the old VWs in someone's yard and would ask the owner about it. Generally they would say: take it away, or ask us pay a very little amount for it. We'd strip all the loose parts and have at running it around in the open fields nearby. Was so much fun, but we deemed the car was at end of life, often having to improvise to make it driveable. Imagine this: I learned to drive in a VW, pulling the throttle with my left hand, steering and shifting with my right hand, with no brakes, in the winter, and in the woods!

I second that; I thought that was his original intention. I believe there are products specifically formulated to treat the surface rust and patina on the outside to preserve it. To have the dash and the inside beautifully painted with the original code color and interior restored with original type material and color would be a great approach.

Dear Reader, Mr. CT is very much on the right track, building up his skills and confidence at a good speed. When it comes to the interior colour design. Perhaps painting the dashboard , inner parts of the doors and the inner side skirts of the car in an simple, contrasting dark colour (dark blue?) combined with seats, carpets and an inner roof cover in broken white-blue/patina (like the outside), would bring a balance in the colour set. Dark blue inside en light-blue/patine upholstery and outside. Perhaps even with the typical 70's dark blue stripes from bumper to bumper. May I end with...very well done, Sir? Yes? Well, chapeau/hat off for Mr. CT. With Kind Regards, Michèl F. van den Brun Dutch pedestrian

Hey, I think the patina outside ist nice and enough for the car. If its my car I would do the inside super clean like it's a new Beetle. That's makes for a big Smile Effekt if you pik someone up with that Bugg. Also think about the Engine and the Mechanik that's also all new so your keeping it straight outside all original and inside a nice Place you want to be like in a Time capsule.
@elaineferreira2980 Жыл бұрын
Congratulations. There are many details, it is not easy. With all this restoration work I wouldn't make an inventory, I would leave it within 100% of the original, including the painting. A beetle like this fully restored here in Brazil is worth around 50 thousand reais or more. Congratulations once again, I'm always waiting for your videos, especially the one about the beetle. hug.

On the side of the luggage rack, it is probably best to do a spot weld rather than multiple tacs. It won't fight you and leave a stronger weld. I assume you know how to do a spot weld, but if not, take the wire and put it in the center touching the bottom panel and start and make circles until you cover the entire hole. I hope this helps and you are doing amazing!

You may want to make a pet bar that you could use with your body to help hold the two panels together and hold your welding tip back from the panel so you can see better. I try to just try to let the wire file the hole so it's filled. Doing a great job!

Hey mate it's so great to see you doing so well. My vote is definitely to keep the patina on the dash. It would look really weird to have the whole car in that lovely old patina and then a painted perfect dash. Just patch the hole by the radio as best you can and then treat the dash the same as the outside - clear coat or whatever. It might be better to replace the whole rear inner wing panel, rather than just patch the little holes. The holes show the panel there has become really thin and compromised. If you patch those holes, it won't be long until there are others appearing. Just a thought. Also - get a sponsor for your undies, man! We see a good few inches of them on every video, so you may as well !!! 😅😅 Great work with the luggage tray - looking forward to the rest. 👍 Julian.

Sometimes it is a fine line between honest wear and tear and full on patina. If you are going full patina, go all in with no exceptions including the dash and door panels. For the door panels cover with distressed look vinyl or leather. After you weld in the patch for the radio, some ivory paint, a wire wheel and soaked in vinegar and Bob's your uncle.

Repaint the inside and leave the outside patina. You can use wipe on clear coat, they did used to make brush on seam sealer. Ask your buddy out in CA, he has a lot of experience through the years.
@darkfactory8082 Жыл бұрын
I have a suggestion, which could be the best way to preserve your seams... First soak the seams with some antioxidiser, allow it to do it's job, then blow the seam with the air gun. Once dry, get a small bit of paint, make it thin and soak the seam. Leave it to dry and clean the running excess. Then seal it and it should be the best possible way to get it done for a long time, except if you're planning to dip the whole body in chemicals.. Cheers, keep on.

If you would like to keep the patina of the beetle, maybe try to apply "some" adhesive foil. There are unique printed ones - like the advertises on the vans- so it would fit on the beetle. I think you have more than enough pictures from the original (the state you found) the beetle. So a company can print a roll of foil to this beetle. You need to do the bodywork, but spare a lot on paint. Do not mint the newly added patches and welds. And maybe you can learn how to apply car foils, and make a new businness. :D

If the patina is being kept, I'd say to use either a satin finish, or flat finish clear coat over the entire thing.
@georgeclements2742 Жыл бұрын
Looking at that rear wheel arch, I suspect that a series of small patches would be a waste of time and effort and that further holes would appear in no time. I know that you want to keep as much original metal as possible, but I would buy a replacement panel and use it to repair an area back to really solid metal. That would give a stronger and more weatherproof result and also mostly overcome the tricky task of making repair patches with complex curvature.

you simply have to start from the fact that the more original parts you leave the better, the only ones that must be touched are those that compromise the structure, therefore the perfect functionality and safety of the vehicle, everything else must be left as it is, I suggest you put some primer paint on the bottoms and throw the clear coat in the toilet, some texaco or california beach stickers and you're good to go!

Could paint the main part of the dash but leave the grills and glove-box door in a patina'd state? Dunno. I think the order is primer, sealer, then top/color coat and clear. Gives the sealer a good surface to grip, only one layer divorced from the metal so it can't separate between layers, and still gives the metal the best protection. In theory. But I don't actually know that's the order, it's just the order that makes logical sense to me.
