I am a regular viewer......each and every video I think to myself how fortunate you are to have access to these bridleways. I wish landowners in the US had a similar mindset to allow riders to use trails on their land.
@TheSeamstress1
@TheSeamstress1 5 жыл бұрын
Actually it's the government who writes these "rights of way" into title deeds so whether you like it or not you have no choice and I feel that is the correct way it should be. There are groups of walkers who frequently meet and walk the rights of ways to make sure they're accessible as some land owners do try to gate and fence off all of their land, which they can do but they must not lock it with padlocks or such like but the person seeking right of way has the law on their side and the walkers make that clear if it is locked for other walkers/hackers etc. Anyway, we are very lucky to have this network runing allover the UK. Some trails are breathtaking! It's teally great for boosting your happiness levels getting out in nature!

Some of the landowners are so big, the Church, Oxford and Cambridge Colleges, the titled old families, that locals would have huge detours if us poor folk weren’t allowed through!

I believe that the tradition of "rights of way" goes back to medieval times so there are hundreds of years of precedence built into the concept. Very much like the idea of "a common", where people without pasturage could graze animals even though they did not own the land.
@TheSeamstress1
@TheSeamstress1 5 жыл бұрын
@T Anon Yes, you are correct in that. Maybe it's because all land was owned by the King or the Queen and still today buying land is really renting the land off of the state on a rolling 99 year lease that automatically renews itself. We're all only temporary minders of all things anyway haha!

@@FancySassy80 I feel you. Even walking my dog. So many developments and even people with land go ballistic. It's like--what is my dog going to do to your land? Tara, seeing you remount with just a little help from that bank, you would most likely be able to mount Farouk anywhere by just dropping the stirrup down low enough. As someone who has always ridden tall horses, I've always made sure that the stirrup leather had holes low enough down to allow me to remount in an emergency, even if that meant adding an extra hole or two myself. :)

@@raraavis7782 You nake a good point about Apollo, especially since he's already trained to bow. But I have confidence that Tara could train Farouk to do it too. My question would be, does a rider mounting in a bow put undue strain on the horse's front legs, shoulders and neck? With other riders around, wouldn't a knee up be the best solution if no mounting advantage could be found? X

I just realized your road dont have ditches??? Yeah, at 155 cm (about 5 foot 1 inch) I was the queen of the creative remount given my Appaloosa was 16 hands. In America, most roads have drainage that runs parallel and my horse was really cool about standing in a ditch so I could scramble back on... my English saddle had short stirrup leathers, as well. Nicely done on the mount up, Farourk was quite the gentleman to stand so still.

A very well done remount! I will tell you that Western saddles lend themselves to field remounts much more than English saddles do, so 6'03" of me never had problems on a 17 H Western remount; but the same horse with an English remount always felt like I was going to pull the saddle right off the side! You did it much easier than I ever could! Neither horse liked the hogs; but, the hogs very definitely did not like the horses at all.

I've never ridden flat saddle, but I learned early from my first horse who loved trying to wipe me off under low branches to lie flat down beside my horse's neck, leg barely on top of the saddle... I had an old antique cavalry saddle to learn on... But low hanging branches seemed to be that mare's specialty. 😡. I envy all the trails accessible over there across the pond. Here it's power lines and old logging roads. All of which are disappearing more and more.
@larinvermont3271
@larinvermont3271 5 жыл бұрын
@@Tara101 My coaches insisted that we learn on EVERYTHING, including putting me on a side saddle [definitely not my favorite set of lessons]. I think I mentioned before, but the concept of an "English Saddle" during the 60s, 70s, and early 80s was the then named "Park Seat," a perfectly smooth saddle flap without any knee roll, a pommel which was barely raised, and a cantle almost flat to the back. The modern is much closer to what was then called an Austrian Saddle, which included rough-out knee rolls, raised pommel and cantle, and was commonly used for jumping [but is closer to the saddle you're using now]. Between the U-fork pommel, a high backed cantle, and wide stirrup leathers, a Western Saddle is much heavier and doesn't move at all when mounting. I look back over 60 years, and marvel at the changes. But, in the end, saddle choice still comes down to personal preference and what you're doing [or the FEI event standards]. And, I repeat, you remounted much easier and cleaner than I would have on that saddle style, even back when I was a youngster around 20!
@larinvermont3271
@larinvermont3271 5 жыл бұрын
@@jaykb6587 Better than one very miserable standard-bred gelding, whose idea of 'funny' was putting a newbie's leg up against an electric strand. The saddle flaps and stirrup leathers were heavy enough to protect him, but definitely lit up the poor beginners! And we are lucky in New England: Utility Cuts which are maintained as grasslands, Class 3 and 4 Town Highways which the towns maintain, and even Town Trails which were originally laid out as Town Roads, just no longer used as such.
@helencollins4462
@helencollins4462 5 жыл бұрын
I have ridden both. The Western saddle has it in spades for comfort and ease over the English saddle. But there is more to get in the way for jumping, for example. And when my mare reared and fell over backwards on me, I was lucky that the horn of my Western saddle didn't hit me. As it was the cantle did, and that would have been less of a hit with an English saddle. I think they both have their aesthetic as well as utilitarian uses.

You know...I just thought of this. My ex father-in-law used to be very good at training horses...he used to train his horses to stretch out. He would tap the front legs while standing beside them and holding the reins, they would step forward with the front legs only. He would do this a couple of times and they would be at least a hand or two lower, making it much easier to mount. But, of course, it puts the horse a little off balance so you have to mount carefully. He did that all the time, he never used a block.

Gosh, that low hanging tree, not ideal at all, unless it had blown down the night before (although didn’t look like it), can’t believe whoever mapped out and walked the route didn’t think it would be a problem 😯 I wouldn’t have been able to mount from the ground on the 17hh plus horse I rode ( I’m 5ft 5, with a dodgy knee) and putting the stirrup down is no good as I can’t then safely get my leg over lol. I’m not sure he’d have fitted under that tree either 😂 That’s where your training has come in Tara, at least Farouk stood quietly where you wanted him to so you could safely mount 👍 I must admit my horse was very good at allowing me to mount from gates, fallen logs, picnic tables etc, so necessary if you go out and about in the countryside a lot 😊 Farouk was good with the pigs too, as you said, a lot of horses aren’t too keen on them and even when they ran away he didn’t react 👍

I think someone should invent a little stool you can put on ur back like a rucksack and if you have to get off you can put stool up and get back on and I even babe thought about getting the stool back up to put back on ur back is a bit of rope to pull it back up xx

Is everything okay with Farouk? He seemed very distracted compared to other videos - and he almost seemed hesitant to canter, or maintain the canter, when usually he's all go, go, go. Was it maybe just having another horse traveling with him?

I used to ride the quietest trail horses - although forward going...but we used to ride past a piggery and the horses hated it! Actually I wasn't too keen on the smell either!

You’ll have to practice your ducking and side to side movements...you have a bad back? I thought I heard you say that...we sometimes ride in the mountains where there is tight spaces between trees...low hanging branches....I feel like I’m doing my yoga on my horse....we carry a small saw to help when we can’t get through....experience is the best teacher...

Thank you Tara!! I live and have horses in Maryland USA and I'm am so envious of the amazing trails that you have there. Do you have to drive far to get to some of these or are they all relatively close to you village? Your horses are well trained and well taken care of. Please don't let the internet trolls upset you!!❤

great comment thank you. The maximum distance from home that I go is 1.15 hours in the horse box. Most of the non event rides I do are 30 mins in the box. However we have a lot of bridleways which are around our house.

In my younger days when I rode here in Mn. USA, we always had a buddy make a sling with hands and support the rider’s foot up on to mount the horse. Is that not done anymore? Or not done in your Country TARA??

The truth is Farouk is wonderful, the trip was good and he was nice❤️ but, I MISS APOLLO SO MUCH, are you going to quit riding him all together? I hope you are going to take him on some trips soon❤️ by the way, You did very good getting back on Farouk when you had to get off to go under the tree❣️

thanks Debbie he stood really well so it was not a problem. I do still ride Apollo but mostly schooling and a gallop once or twice a week. Apollo is not fit enough to do an endurance ride now.

That's bad who chose the route they should have got the farmer to cut the branch back , although maybe it was the idea to test the riders fitness?

The smaller Arab stayed with Farouk well. They are a popular breed for endurance. Did your travelling companion talk to her horse in the same way you do. Well got up.. the advantage of a smaller horse. Farouk was a good boy, in that situation. Tara Isn’t that the first time you have had a traveling companion. Is the other horse unshod too. What is it with pigs... x
